That Electrifying First Kiss

by Maggie Toussaint

Do you remember your first kiss? Was it all heart-poundy and nerve-wracking or did you go with the flow? I remember being both thrilled and terrified. A tomboy from the cradle, I wasn’t sure I wanted to swap spit with anyone, so I held out a lot longer than some of my classmates at the middle school dances.

Finally, I met up with a kindred soul who was just as reluctant but wanted to see what the fuss was all about. We kissed each other, and were sorely disappointed. Later, I realized why – no spark of attraction.

Attraction gives kissing a kick that isn’t soon forgotten. My first real kiss came when a friend’s handsome cousin visited one summer. He was different from the boys around here, and he listened to what I had to say. I fell for him in all of an hour. His kiss seared my heart and set the standard for all future kisses.

As a romance writer, I want that same level of zip-zam-zowie in my character’s love lives. Here’s a snip from Muddy Waters. Let me know if you enjoy Roxie and Sloan’s first kiss at a friend’s wedding:

Strains of a haunting song about forever love filled the room. Folks around the room applauded when Roxie stepped into Sloan’s arms. “This is so embarrassing,” she murmured against his chest.

“Not a problem.” Sloan danced with her in the only way he knew, up close and personal. She felt great in his arms. With her height, he didn’t get a crick in his neck or back due to bending over to talk to her.

She was light on her feet and her fragrance triggered a deep, sensual hunger. The urge to kiss her thrummed through his blood. Though she felt right in his arms, he knew better than to trust his instincts when it came to females.

Kissing her would prove she was just another woman.

With that in mind, he navigated them toward an alcove, a secluded spot he’d noticed earlier when they entered the hall. With finesse, he angled her into the private space, then waited, silently urging her to look up.

When she did, he lowered his head slowly, giving her an out if she wanted it. She didn’t break eye contact, didn’t utter a sound in protest.

He brushed her lips with the barest of kisses. Raw current arced between them. A sexy little moan sounded deep in her chest. He went in for a second taste, nibbling, nuzzling, silently imploring her to open for him.

When she did, he was lost.

The first kiss is an awesome thing. It's the first time you feel like an adult, the first time you feel special, and mine happened around my 16th birthday party. It was sweet, but nothing that shook me to the foundations. Those kisses came later in life.

Lovely excerpt, Maggie. I think only the kisses we remember are those we experienced with somoene very special. As you said, it's not the kiss itself, it's the kisser that counts.

Sadly I don't remember my first kiss...probably because there was no spark! I do remember my first kiss with my hubby and there was definitely a spark there! I would say more like fireworks!

My first kiss was from a guy so gorgeous, even his driver's license photo was beautiful. But he kissed open mouth...and I wasn't impressed, rather I felt more like a single-dip Dairy Queen. Bleh! Note to self: never expect great kisses from someone whose DL photo is prettier than mine.

Hey everybody! I'm excited to see so many comments here. I planned to pop in here right after this posted and stir things up but I fell asleep while working on a critique. Doesn't that sound exciting? or not...

I'd like to say hey to joder and thank her for sharing her first kiss was at sweet sixteen.

Hi to Cindy L who reported fireworks with the first kiss from her husband.

Hullo to Linda Swift who is of course brilliant for agreeing with me about the kisser being more important than the kiss.

Hi to Elie, I hope you have many kisses with zip-zam-zowie moments.

Hey Kasey, I had my memory refreshed about the electricity between folks with chemistry when I chapparoned the eighth grade dance. I had to pry more than one couple apart on the dance floor and got singed in the process, LOL.

Oh, Kimberley. I feel for you, hon. That slobbering dog was a terrible kisser. You deserve far better. Go forth and knock 'em dead.

Loving the comments, folks. Thanks for stopping in!

First Kiss? Well let me see.A bunch of us (girls and boys) were playing tag in the front lawn of the water treatment plant at dusk. This one guy who was in my history class was a dream. But I thought he only liked the snobby girls. He came over and he pulled my arm and he kissed me. He said he had wanted to do that for a long time but didn't because he was afraid of my dad. WOW ..it was electrifying. We never dated but he would always wink at me.....So that was my first kiss.
I love reading these blogs....

I remember dreading my first kiss. I'd moved from Ohio to Arizona and found things moved a little faster there. It was like a whole other world. The first time a friend hugged me, I thought she was gay, but that's a whole other story. When the kiss finally happened I was so worried about doing it right that I didn't enjoy it very much. Luckily, the first isn't the last.

I remember being a boy's first kiss better than my actual first kiss. My first kiss was forgetable, but being the "experienced" person was a turn on - LOL!

He recently friended me on facebook, and just seeing his name brought a big blush to my face! Sad in a way - because I liked thinking of how he was then - not how he is now.

First kiss with Hubby - ahhh - zip-zam-zowie it right!! Great post!

My first kiss was actually pretty good. He was older (a senior in high school to my freshman) and he gave me a birthday kiss that lasted for 10 minutes. That he had a girlfriend made it even more exciting. ;-)

I was addicted to kissing after that.

My first real kiss was from a guy I dated in high school. He was a JUNIOR and I was in 9th grade. He was really a very sweet guy, and older, so that was exciting, but he was one of those one in a million guys that wouldn't "take advantage", a true gentleman--my parents (since I was younger) would only let us go on "coke dates" where we had to be home in an hour. I went to the prom with him that year. He was a great kisser!

Loved the post, Maggie!

I'm melting. I really liked Muddy Waters, Sweetie.

I can't remember my first kiss ever. I don't think I want too. LOL!!

I remember kissing my husband when he came to visit me at the MP station back in 1991 and we were all alone.
Sigh...
