I work as a pharmacy technician when I'm not crafting tales of horror and intrigue, and certain medicines are prone to being pronounced in different ways. Take this one: Pravastatin. I pronounce it with short a's, whereas the folks I work with say it with long a's. So when I asked someone if we had more in stock, she had no idea what I was talking about.
Normally, I would blow this off as a fluke. But recently my family and I moved from Texas to the north. Up here, I've noticed that people don't do things the way we do in the south. My husband doesn't see this so much as I do; he wasn't raised in the south. I'll give you a few examples.
When I say y'all, I get odd looks.
When people ask me for directions and I tell them it takes about fifteen minutes to get there instead of how many miles the distance is, they look lost.
When I ask for Coke in a restaurant, I get ... Coke. That's just not right, y'all.
Oh, and my favorite. "You lived in Texas? Did you own..." *snort* "Any ten gallon hats?" *derisive laughter*
No, I don't own any ten gallon hats. Nor have I ever. Not that I have anything against a ten gallon or two.

They y'all thing is pretty funny. I know two women who use to live in the south and moved up here,(MN), years ago. They both still say y'all. Funny thing is, I'm so used to it, I barely notice anymore, but do give them some crap when they do:)

It's amazing the differences that you see in different areas or with people who were raised differently. Fore example when I think of "tea" I think of sweet, iced tea whereas others would think of hot tea in a cup.
