The First Kiss from Where the Heart Lies

Now that I've told you a little about myself and my book WHERE THE HEART LIES, I thought it'd be nice if I gave you a little sample. Just a taste, really, but it's one of my favorite parts of the book: the first kiss between the heroine Alicia and hero Liam.

The sight of her arranged attractively in the late afternoon light temporarily took his breath away. Curious, he leaned forward, placing one hand on the arm of the chair and peering at the book in her lap. One of his mother’s favorite books of poetry. He started to straighten, not sure if he should wake her, when she stirred and he met her gaze from just a few inches away.

She smiled drowsily at him. “Come here.”

Her voice, soft and sexy, filled him with desire, and Liam almost leaned forward, holding his ground at the last second as he searched for a suitable way to reply. As he hesitated, however, she slipped her arms around his neck, pulling him closer, her lips against his so suddenly he wasn’t quite clear how it had happened. Confused, he fought the urge to pull her into a deeper embrace. She was asleep and didn’t know what she was doing, and he dreaded her embarrassment when she woke completely. Yet he couldn’t resist raising one hand to brush back her hair as he began to disengage himself.

As the kiss tapered off at his gentle urging, she drew away a little, her eyes at first puzzled, then abruptly horrified. He watched as her face flushed a lovely shade of rose to clash with her hair and she jerked away from him, her body language closing up like a flower at the end of the day. “Oh God!” She covered her face. “I’m so sorry! I didn’t— I must have fallen asleep. I had just finished up and I ran across this book… I just wanted to take a quick look before leaving, but…”

Liam let his hand remain on her hair for another moment, wishing he could caress the glowing tendrils, allow them to curl about his fingers. He wasn’t used to resisting temptation, especially the temptation of beautiful women. Normally when confronted by an attraction for a woman, he’d pursue the flirtation to see where it took him. More often than not, or at least often enough, women responded well to his advances. This wasn’t necessarily a source of pride to him, but he did enjoy playing the game.

He couldn’t play that game with her. Not with Ty’s wife. Pushing away his desire, he withdrew his hand.
