Excerpt from Chasing Fireflies - Appears in Timeless Escapes: A Collection of Summer Stories

Excerpt:
He bent forward and pushed it toward her. “No, but it is the temporary residence of the person who stole my beach shoes.”
Her hand missed the pitcher handle when she reached for it. “I stole nothing. Hell, I should do you a favor and toss them in the ocean. They’re disgusting. How do you even have the nerve to give them to someone to wear?” She rested her elbows on the wide chair arms to steady herself.
Jack stood and leaned over her, placing both of his hands on the arms of her chair. “Maybe, but they’re mine and I’m here to claim them. Where are they please?” he whispered like it was an invitation for her to come closer.
She sank deeper into the chair. “I’ll get them later.” She slid down lower as she grew nervous. She never planned on meeting someone and he interested her but she was still coming to terms with her breakup. “I want to read my book and finish my drink.” She pressed her palm to his hard yet inviting chest. With the sun in her eyes she could only feel him and smell the sweet scent of pineapple, coconut, and a slight hint of rum that told her he was close. His chest pressed against her hand and she didn’t resist.
He leaned in closer and gently cupped her face. His skin was surprisingly soft—not weathered like she’d imagined. He lingered.
Damn sun. She couldn’t see him.
She closed her eyes and relied on the image of his magnificent eyes burned into her memory. She leaned back and welcomed his lips as he kissed her—softly, tenderly. It wasn’t the kiss of a craggy seafaring captain. No, it was the kiss of a man who knew what he wanted but who had been hurt. Confident, but enough reluctance to be wary. “I’ll be back later to collect my shoes. I’d prefer you didn’t toss them in the ocean.” He backed away as she sank into the chair and dropped her book.

Christmas Wishes and Dreams of French Silk Pie

Is Lee ready to start living again?
by Danica Winters
Christmas is one of my favorite holidays (closely followed by Halloween, but this could be thanks to my love of all things chocolate). I love the icy pine-scented air that reawakens your winter dulled senses the second you step outside. I love the spirit of thankfulness, good tidings, and joy.
But what if we weren't so lucky? What if Christmas only reawakened the wounds of our past?  This is exactly the case for my newest character, Lee Llewellyn.
In Christmas Wishes, Lee has lost her son and is forced to face another holiday season with only her memories for comfort. In Lee, I tried to create a character in which every reader with a child, or who has ever dealt with a divorce, could relate.  Life can be hard when you must go through it alone, but what can help? For Lee, this was her love of French Silk Pie.
Without spoiling anything, I can tell you that sometimes dreams of French Silk Pie can blossom into unexpected Christmas Wishes.
I hope you get the chance to check out my newest short story--I'm sure you will finish this story with your cheeks aching from laughter and your heart filled with the joy of Christmas!!
Wishing you the happiest of reading,
Danica Winters

A FEW MINUTES WITH BRENDA GAYLE

Tell us a little about your upcoming release.
My release is a short story, entitled Father of the Bride? It's a contemporary romance set revolving around a wedding in the Caribbean. The heroine or hero are neither the bride nor the groom.

Can you give us a one-sentence synopsis of your book?
She never expected to see her ex again, but at their son's wedding he's father of the bride.

Where did the idea for the book come from?
I read an article about high school sweathearts who reunited later in life. The first line of Father of the Bride? is almost a direct quote from the woman in the article: You are not supposed to meet the love of your life when you're twelve. For some reason that quote stuck with me.

I had just handed in the manuscript for the second book of my contemporary romantic suspense and was looking for a small project as a break before I started working on the third book. My editor, the incomparable Maggie Johnson, told me about a call for submissions The Wild Rose Press had issued for a new digital anthology it was putting together focusing on weddings and older heroines (not necessarily the bride). The story just fell into place.

How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?
I generally write full-length novels (about 90,000 words). This short story clocks in at about 16,000 words and it took me two weeks to complete the first draft. I then spent a month layering and revising it before submitting it to my editor.

If this were a movie, who would you choose to play your hero and heroine?
The tall blond-haired, blue-eyed,
all American Tim Robbins
would be fantastic as David Parker.
Dana Delany would make
a wonderful Penny Malloy.

Can you tell us something else about your book that might pique readers' interest?
I have difficulty writing a straight-up romance. I'm always looking to add some element of suspense or a twist to surprise the reader. Father of the Bride? is no exception.

Father of the Bride? is currently available for Kindle at http://www.amazon.com/Father-Bride-Dearly-Beloved-ebook/dp/B009M6XO4C and will be released to the rest of the world January 23.

AN EXCERPT FROM FATHER OF THE BRIDE?

Hi everyone, I'm back to give you an excerpt for my new contemporary romance short, Father of the Bride?

You are not supposed to meet the love of your life when you’re twelve. Penny Malloy’s world contracted as she caught a glimpse of David Parker across the hotel lobby. She was as in love with him now as she had been when he’d kissed her on the playground of the Sackville Elementary School, forty-one years ago. The fact she hadn’t laid eyes on him in almost a quarter century didn’t seem to matter to her heart. “Damn!”

“Did you say something?” Adam looked down, his brow furrowed with concern.

She shook her head and tried to smile reassuringly. Dear Adam. Her son had no idea she was slowly dying inside. Well, the truth was she’d been slowly dying for twenty-four years, but this weekend was sure to finish her off.

“There they are.” Adam squeezed her hand before releasing it to wave at two people across the lobby. “Chloe. David. We’re over here.”

Penny held her breath as the pair came towards them. Would he say anything to give them away? Of course not. If he hadn’t said anything before, he wasn’t likely to now. Still, it was going to feel awkward to be introduced as strangers. What should she say? Nice to meet you?

Adam hugged Chloe. As he shook David’s hand, Chloe turned to embrace her.

“Mom,” Adam, said, “this is David Parker, Chloe’s dad.”

Brenda Gayle
Real women. Real men. Real romance.

GOOD MORNING & WELCOME

Hi all, I'm Brenda Gayle and I'm so glad you could stop by and help me celebrate the upcoming release of my short story, Father of the Bride? I'm really stoked because this is the first release in the new digital anthology, Dearly Beloved, from The Wild Rose Press.

She never expected to see her ex again, but at their son's wedding he's father of the bride.

For the mother of the groom, a destination wedding at a Caribbean resort should be a joyful occasion, but Penny Malloy doubts her heart will survive the weekend. Her ex-husband is the stepfather of the bride.

As soon as she sees David Parker again, she realizes she loves him as much as she ever did. What started as a fairy tale romance—when twelve-year-old David kissed Penny on the playground—has turned into a demented soap opera: a son who doesn't know his father's identity, and divorced parents pretending to be strangers.

But it's another kiss that reminds them of all they had...and the promise of what could be. Can David and Penny face the past together and declare their feelings? Or are they twenty-four years too late?

I'll pop back later with an excerpt and some fun stuff about the book. In the meantime, I'd love to know your thoughts on love and second chances. Don't we all have "that special someone" in our past that we still wonder about?

New C I N Series e-Shorts Available NOW!

ImageThe C I N Series Shorts follows the original characters from the debut novel, C I N (and a few characters you’ve never met–nor will you meet unless you read the shorts), a Puritan Series for the characters in C I N 2: Traitor which you haven’t met yet, and Amie’s Journals. (You’ll find out who Amie is in C I N 2: Traitor on July 15, 2012!)

YOU CAN LEARN ABOUT THE NEW SET UP ON MY BLOG DEDICATED SOLELY TO C I N!

The first e-short is Donna Denning. This story will interest anyone who wants to know about Donna’s traitorous beginning. It tells of what really happened at the warehouse–who caused the fire and why.
You’ll get to know a few side characters from the debut novel, C I N. Their significance in book one was so small, you may not even remember them! Big Al, Kurt and Anthony (Brace Face) are pretty much known for their part in creating cash flow for C I N.(I bet you don’t remember! lol!)  In this e-short, you’ll learn more about them.
Donna Denning should raise a few questions about Michael and Donna that you would otherwise never think about (in the novels) and the answers to those questions will only come through future e-shorts.
Throughout all the e-shorts you will witness the character development of Lisa’s parents, Jimmy and Amber in Story 2, entitled: Jimmy & Amber (also available on Amazon), and in story 3, entitled: Pete and Marie, Lisa’s Aunt Millie becomes more than a side character with a secret. (Actually, she’s in all three new e-shorts!), Reggie and even the villainous Frank make an appearance in the new e-shorts.
Sometimes, in the full length novels, things will happen, that without the e-shorts, you’d never know their significance.(And, no, I won’t give away any secrets here.)

;o) Okay, maybe a few hints ;o)

A few examples that you can look for while you read the new e-shorts:
  1. While Ally and Lisa are in the kayak, Ally admits that she doesn’t want a best friend because it hurts to watch them grow old…
  2. At the bonfire, Lisa noticed that Pete and Ally appeared to have a bond.
  3. The events behind the warehouse fire.
  4. Everyone hates Donna, but why?
Image
Art by Loyal O.A.K

One of my favorite characters had to be eliminated. You’ll get your first take of Eric in Story 2: Jimmy & Amber. The first three stories were created in order of years. Donna Denning, the warehouse kids’ beginning–1982; Jimmy & Amber, the year Jimmy made the ultimate sacrifice for love–1990, and of course, Pete and Marie which is set in 1999.

As an added bonus, until the release of C I N 2: Traitor, Donna Denning will include the debut novel C I N! (For those who want a refresher, have never read C I N and/or would like to use it for reference).

I hope you like the e-shorts! If these prove to be of interest to you, the reader, then the following reading schedule will go into effect:

The entire C I N collection in suggested reading order:
1.  The C I N Series: Book 1 – “Lynn, Lynn, City of Sin. You Never Come Out the Way You Went In.”
Note: You need to read this story to fully understand any of the short stories. Although    the shorts are not vital to the 7 novels in the series, the novels are imperative to the shorts.
If you have not read the first book, please contact me personally! (via Facebook, Twitter, email, blog…)
2. The C I N Series Shorts: Story 1 – Donna Denning
The story behind Donna’s traitorous beginning…

4.  The C I N Series Shorts: Story 3 – Pete & Marie

Good Morning from Dawn Montgomery

Good morning!

I'm up here in Alaska, and it's freeeezing this morning! Brrrr. The coffee's brewing, everything is still and silent, and I'm enjoying a few moments of peace before I have to wake the household.

What is your favorite time of day?

Mine happens to be mornings like this. I look out across the neighborhood and admire the shimmering top layer of snow. It looks like glitter.

No sun until around 10am, yet I can see clearer now than you can imagine. The snow reflects the light of the moon. The northern lights sometimes slide overhead, greens, yellows, reds. Moments like this make me believe in magic, in the strength of the heart, and anything is possible. And just like that *snap* a story idea is born.

Today you'll be given tons of tidbits, hot and delicious excerpts and all kinds of fun from the Changeling Press authors.

With Changeling Press's amazing contest, you could win free ebooks for a year! Plus many other prizes. How do you do it? Every purchase of a White Hot Christmas story enters you in the contest! These short and sexy tales promise to deliver enough heat to melt ice...and I think we have some of THAT in our books as well. ;)

Did you ever wonder if Santa and Mrs. Clause had a family? I happened upon one of their nephews in my travels. Luke Klaus (fans self. YUM). Seems he's got a little problem in Destiny, Texas...a lady by the name of Noella Davis. This sexy little beauty has lost the Christmas spirit, and it's up to Luke to bring it back...by any means necessary. Oh. And he can't use magic...because he was...well...naughty. :D And don't we loooove naughty?

Luke Klaus has a problem. Christmas will be canceled if he can't get Destiny, Texas, back on the Holiday Cheer Map. A Christmas wish is all that stands between him and a perfect record. His target is packed with killer curves and a heart of gold that's been broken one too many times. Lucky for Luke, mixing a little business with pleasure might be just what the holiday doctor ordered.

Noella Davis is tired. Too many years as Destiny's cheer coordinator has left her drained and disillusioned. Is it a coincidence that brings her face-to-face with her old crush, or does the man in black leather have his own agenda? Either way, she'll have her cake and eat it too even if she has to tie him to the bed. Maybe her Christmas wishes will come true...

This really is a case for The Other Klaus.

Seductive, strong vixens + Excerpt from The Enchanted Meadow (R)

I’m not sure why but most of my heroines are more experienced sexually and more worldly than my heroes. This is mainly because my heroines are usually goddesses, faeries, vampires or some other kind of otherworldly being that is much older than the hero.
This isn’t typical of romances, or at least the romances I used to read that had helpless heroines. I can’t relate to helpless women so I can’t write helpless heroines. I like strong-willed heroines that don’t back down to opposition.
Alina, the tree faery in The Enchanted Meadow is more experienced than Taran, but she needs his help so in a way, she is vulnerable without being completely weak. She helps him as much as he helps her to overcome the curse, and the results of that curse in the meadow.
I realize some men don’t like strong women, which is why I like to write heroes that are comfortable in their own skin and don’t feel threatened by a smart, more experienced woman. Besides, it’s fun to have the confident heroine torment the hero a little bit when they first meet, to throw him off his guard. A little teasing and tormenting creates that sexual tension that romance readers love so much. I think characters like Scarlet O’Hara in Gone with the Wind influenced me. Her sharp tongue and wit left men open-mouthed with wonder. It didn’t hurt either that she was a beauty.
What hero can turn away from a seductive heroine that has it all—beauty, brains and butt-kicking attitude? Below is an excerpt from The Enchanted Meadow that introduces Alina, the seductive Tree Faerie.

Excerpt from The Enchanted Meadow, Rated R

The mist crawled toward him, caressing his body like nimble fingers, stroking his lips, chest, and encircling his member. His shaft throbbed with arousal under the otherworldly caresses. The copper-haired beauty came to him again, bringing a welcome smile to his lips. Her green eyes peered at him beneath gold-tipped lashes, beckoning him. Without speaking, she allowed her tunic dress to slip off her shoulders. It fell around her ankles landing in a heap on the leaf-strewn ground.

Moonlight cast a bright silver halo around her head, giving her the essence of a love goddess. Moonbeams splashed down her naked body, revealing curvaceous hips and swollen breasts that tempted him, awakening his lust. His erection pushed against his trews, painful and urgent.

Smiling, she kissed him, brushing her hands all over his body. His crumpled clothes joined hers on the ground in a disjointed embrace.

Her long, lustrous hair spilled to her hips in a fiery plunge, teasing his naked skin as she planted kisses down his chest and to his throbbing member.

She made magic with her tongue that no mortal woman could master, flicking it across his shaft at lightning speed. It felt as if multiple tongues brushed along his skin, the dancing flames set his body on fire. The unquenchable fire sizzled into an inferno, threatening to burst. He came in a thunderous orgasm, his body rocking from the force of the mighty eruption.

“Now it is my turn to pleasure ye, my fiery lassie.” He stroked her clit, lightly rolling it between his fingers. Her wetness glistened in the moonlight.

With his mouth, he explored her sex, relishing her sweet womanly scent of apples, rosemary, and a hint of roses. The exotic blend intoxicated him. Caressing her silky thighs with his hands, he moved his tongue in circles, flicking her clit in soft strokes.

Moaning, she arched her milky white hips, moving against his mouth in an urgent rhythm that matched their rapid heartbeats. Quivers shot through her body, and her climax pulsated around him. He captured her essence, her sweet nectar.

They lay under the moon and the stars in a sated embrace.

The Irish Fianna, my favorite hunky warriors

I like to write stories with warriors, male and female. I’m not sure why except that since my stories are set in ancient or Dark Age time periods when warfare was an important aspect of life and survival, I am drawn to the courageous warriors that lived to fight and die with honor. For a non-military person, fighting a battle is both fascinating and terrifying to me. I try to understand what that might have felt like to face an opponent on the battlefield. To do this, I have read books like The Iliad, stories about King Arthur and his knights and Celtic battle myths like the stories of the Irish Fianna. I like to base my warriors on these fierce and skillful fighting men that had the help of gods or possessed supernatural abilities.

In early Ireland, fianna (singular fian) were small, semi-independent warrior bands who lived apart from society in the forests as mercenaries, bandits and hunters, but could be called upon by kings in times of war. The fianna were kind of like outlaws, the bad boys of Irish mythology, but of course, they were useful to the king when war broke out. They appear in Irish mythology, most notably in the stories of the Fenian Cycle, where they are led by Fionn mac Cumhaill. Reading Gods and Fighting Men by Lady Gregory is a good way to get to know these warriors and their stories.

Membership to the fianna was subject to rigorous tests that proved supernatural prowess in fighting as well as an exceptional skill with words. In one such test the applicant would stand in a waist-deep hole armed with a shield while nine warriors threw spears at him; if he was wounded, he failed. In another his hair would be braided, and he would be pursued through the forest; he would fail if he was caught, if a branch cracked under his feet, or if the braids in his hair were disturbed. He would have to be able to leap over a branch the height of his forehead, pass under one as low as his knee, and pull a thorn from his foot without slowing down. He also needed to be a skilled poet.

What more could I ask for in a hero? I like that mix of fierceness and artistic sensitivity. My hero, Taran, in my latest release titled The Enchanted Meadow is based on the Irish Fianna.

Tree Faeries

In my latest release, a short story titled The Enchanted Meadow, I decided to make my heroine, Alina, a Tree Faerie. The ancient Celts believed that since trees were the oldest living organisms in the forest that they were powerful and held the memories of the past. The Celtic Druids worshipped in forests, usually oak groves, and had a close relationship with trees.

Did their close relationship with the trees mean that they conversed with spirits living in the trees? Perhaps. And perhaps it was these tree spirits that taught them the secrets about tree magic, divination and astral travel.

Tree Faeries, or Dryads, are also called Tree Spirits, Tree Ladies, Druidesses, Hamadryads and in Gaelic are sometimes called Sidhe Draoi, which means ‘Faery Druids.’ Tree faeries appear as wisps of light, flitting from tree to tree. These playful, androgynous creatures are referred to as female. They prefer willow trees but can be found in all trees. Tree Faeries are associated with the element of air.

Since Tree Faeries are seen as wisps of light, I needed to figure out a way that my hero could see Alina. Some humans are more sensitive to otherworldly creatures and are able to see the unseen. I decided that my hero, Taran, had some druid training in his earlier years so he was able to see Alina as a human woman while his warriors could only see her as a bobbing light. Taran’s sensitivity to the supernatural also plays a key role in the plot.
