Leaving the Pack by David J. O'Brien - Urban horror romance, with new excerpt

"What's it about?"
Everyone asks this, as you'd expect, when I say I've just published a book.
"Werewolves," I reply.
"Ah, you're getting on the bandwagon!" they say. "Trying to ride Twilight's coattails. Everyone's reading books about vampires and werewolves these days."
It seems that people think I wrote the book thinking about what the next current fashion in novels would be. If only! If only I could write that fast.
In reality, I started Leaving the Pack in 1990. Back then, as far as I can remember, werewolves were the American one terrorising London, or were the wolf-like beings of Whitley Strieber's Wolfen, from nearly a decade before (we'll leave Teen Wolf aside, shall we?).
So if a species of intelligent wolves could exist, why not a race of men who were like wild beasts inside, whose hormone and pheromone production was affected by the moon? No reason. It seemed scientifically feasible to me.
I wrote a novella, and slowly expanded it into a novel over a number of years as I worked on other things, too. And as the years passed, I saw werewolf books and movies appear again. It's like clothing - you don't need to worry about your wardrobe not being in style. Just keep the outfits until they come back into vogue. You write what you want and sooner or later, someone will think it's the right time for it.
Werewolves and vampires are like denim jackets: they're never going to go out of fashion for very long. Romance is like blue jeans: there are lots of cuts, but it's essentially the same thing, and it's always in fashion. Put werewolves and romance together and you have a look that has lasted since Levi Strauss was wearing pocket watches.
But just like the Wolfen, my werewolves were different to everything I had seen and read about both before and after. They're not paranormal beings. They can't infect you; only kill you - albeit with extreme ease. But they only kill you if you upset them.
In short, they're real. So real that I had at one time considered writing "an Interview with the Werewolf," where I got this whole novel from one of their kind spilling the beans on the rest of his race.
And in real life, werewolves have more time for love and romance than they have for killing, as the extract below will show... Unless you upset them.

Nobody believes in werewolves.
That's just what Paul McHew and his friends are counting on.
They and their kind roam our city streets: a race of people from whom the terrible legend stems; now living among us invisibly after centuries of persecution through fear and ignorance. Superficially Caucasian but physiologically very different, with lunar rhythms so strong that during the three days of the full moon they are almost completely controlled by their hormonal instincts, you might have cursed them as just another group of brawling youths or drunken gang-bangers. Now at the point of extinction, if they are to survive their existence must remain restricted to mere stories and legend, but, paradoxically, they also must marry outside their society in order to persist.
The responsibility for negotiating this knife-edge is given to Paul, who runs the streets with his friends during the full moon, keeping them out of real trouble and its resultant difficult questions. Having succeeded for years, he finds his real test of leadership comes when he meets Susan, a potential life-mate, to whom he will have to reveal his true identity if he is ever to leave his pack.

Excerpt:

The rain started as Susan made her way to the coast that evening. The clouds, building up all day and brooding darkly above the mountains, swept over the city and sea on a fierce, sudden wind out of the north, bringing the night with them. A number of enormous bolts, shooting down out of the black mass to the buildings and into the boiling water, followed by thunder to make men flinch and dogs cower, were the prelude to a downpour of seemingly biblical proportions. The water gullied down the streets, bringing the traffic to an almost complete halt. The bus crawled along for another half an hour, the driver’s foot forever on the brake as the cars in front continually stopped. Susan felt herself get irritated. She was going to be very late meeting Paul. It would have been quicker to walk, but the rain outside would have drenched her instantly. The very force of the drops would have plastered her light jacket to her skin and the water rebounding off the ground and puddles would have saturated the rest of her body. In some places, where the accumulated litter and rubbish of the city had clogged the drains, there were veritable ponds to cross and even the cars had to take runs at them. She took deep breaths and told herself it was fashionable for a lady to be late.
Visiting her mother had been good. She had recognized Susan and they’d had a pleasant conversation. The lights in the elder woman’s eyes appeared distant however, as if she were talking from a different epoch, but nevertheless, just as she was going, Susan told her about Paul. Her mother had seemed pleased, but told her she was a bit young to be going out with boys, she’d plenty of time for that and should be studying hard. Susan had smiled and agreed, wondering at the same time if the relationship was really serious and deciding that it was too early to know.
The bar – a wide, low-roofed room with some tables around the edges and a view out over the water – was heaving. The rain had driven the masses from the beach and half of them seemed to have taken refuge here. They would be trapped there in their shorts and t-shirts, miniskirts and beach tops until the rain ceased or at least eased and the floods abated. When she walked into the bar, however, she saw Paul immediately. He didn’t notice her arrive, and for a few seconds she just watched him from the doorway: standing quite alone in the centre of the room where there were fewer people. It didn’t seem to bother him at all. He didn’t look out of place, like you sometimes see people and would have said to your friends: ‘Hey, look at the loner,’ if you’d been back in your teens. It was as if nobody knew he was really there: a mere observer, a step back from the rest of the bar; just standing there watching everyone with an enigmatic smile on his face, as if he’d seen all this before, was appreciating a play for the second time.
To her, however, it was impossible not to notice him. She would have been less surprised to see him in same spot telling jokes or relating a story to an enraptured audience. His aura seemed to fill the air around him, swelling his being until it was the kernel of the room, the core around which everything else revolved.
As she looked at him, she felt that this was a man who could do anything he had a mind to do, who was strong enough to make a decision and stick to it in the face of any opposition. He knew his mind and was not afraid to go with how he saw things, despite what others might think, could take seemingly impossible things and make them his own. It had been a long time since she had known a man like that, and she had often wondered if she would ever encounter another.
Paul turned suddenly towards her and caught her eye smiling broadly. It almost seemed as if he had known she was there all the time, and she was a little taken aback; her gut clenched the way it had when they had first met. She grinned back, then went over and embraced him.
“Sorry I’m so late. What a nightmare!”
“No problem. I was just doing a little people-watching.”
“So I see – you look quite the anthropologist watching a tribal dance.”
He laughed and nodded. “Not far off, not far off.”
They got some drinks and sat down in a quiet corner where a young couple had just left to brave the rain, bored and whining kids in tow. Susan noticed that Paul was carrying a small rucksack. She wondered what he had it for, but decided to wait and find out rather than ask directly. A part of her hoped it was an overnight bag, for she longed to spend the night with him again. The tiny piece or her which took offence at his presumptuousness was silenced by the rest, remembering that she had invited him into her house, and had done it just once.
“How was your mother?” asked Paul.
Susan shrugged slightly before nodding. “Good. She recognized me, and we had a good chat.”
“That sounds great. Did you tell her you met the man of your dreams?”
Susan smiled softly. She was not sure why, but she decided to lie, not really ready to reveal how much she believed that herself. “I didn’t. I’m not sure how old she thought I was, so I didn’t want to upset her.”
Paul didn’t reply, but took her hand and squeezed it softly.
She felt bad then. A panicked thought shot through her mind that he could see through her childish deception, but there was nothing in his expression to suggest that. She smiled more brightly at him, brushing his face with her hand. “I told the nurse, though, and she was delighted.”
Paul laughed and moved his hand to her knee, which he squeezed harder. “Was she now?” he asked as he kissed her on the lips.
They had some more drinks, while outside the torrent subsided. The clouds dispersed, quickly whipped south by the strong wind and the last rays of the day broke through. Once the rain ceased, the bar emptied as the tourists made for their hotels to change and spend the hours of darkness in the restaurants and clubs nearer the city centre. Susan and Paul also left, walking the promenade that separated the beach from the coast road. It was a balmy evening, the dying sun making an effort to evaporate the puddles of standing water, raising the humidity again. They strolled towards Chawni Point, jutting into the sea between them and the river, just another couple among many others doing likewise. The clouds had retreated to the horizon where they hung red across the sky as the glowing sun set, like galloping horses on the edge of a plain, circling some compelling predator. Soon after, the lamps along the sea wall came on and they kept walking as the moon rose above the clouds and poured its argent life across the ocean.
When they reached the Point, they continued walking around it and stopped at a pub that faced the sea on the eastern tip. The bar was a favorite of both strollers and bikers, which made a strange but agreeable blend. Susan came here now and then herself, and it was as full as it always was. They took their drinks outside and sat on the sea wall in the mild evening breeze, gazing at the waning silver disc reflected across the oily water. The satellite seemed to seep life directly into Paul’s eyes, so brightly did they glow in the gloom. The hot passion of before had not returned, and she wondered if it would disappear with the moon each month. However, it was replaced with something else, something more precious to her for being less tangible. She felt that her life would be like the night sky without the resplendence of that satellite, should Paul retreat his presence. She would be without meaning, without life, were he to suddenly disappear. The thought gave her a slight surge of fear, but that fear gave way to something else as she recognized it for what it was: love; the worry that someone she needed would not need her in return. Her heart soared tentatively in this private revelation, glad it had at last encountered this mysterious sensation, but amazed at its abruptness, its sudden evolution. She felt an urge to reveal it then and there, to make her declaration of love in the pearly luminescence, above the vermeil waves, but quelled it cruelly. Reluctant to show her vulnerability, despite its potential luxury, she had not gotten to this pearl-drenched headland by falling at anyone’s feet and would walk away from it as proud as she had arrived, arm in arm with the man whose very skin seeped steel. She would carry her concern untended until ready to tell him the true depth of her feelings and presumed it was an anxiety shared by all, a trepidation that never quite left. Susan wondered if the moon depended upon the night as much as the night depended on the moon, in the infinite dance of the earth and its satellite, and she felt the silver light fill her own being, not directly, but through his luminous eyes. After midnight, they continued westwards past the southern part of the harbor, in which most of the smaller private crafts were moored, and back into the city, where they caught a taxi back to her flat once more.

Chapter Five (PG-13 excerpt)

Monday afternoon, Zach showed up fifteen minutes early to Isabel’s school, preferring to wait over the possibility of being late. He stood outside the fenced playground with the other parents, mostly women, who had congregated in groups of twos and threes. Pine trees ringed the grounds, providing shade for a variety of smaller bushes.
The school’s buzzer sounded, announcing the release of school and a swarm of small people poured from the building. Zach spotted Isabel waiting with her teacher and headed toward them.
“Hi, I’m Zach Hunter,” he said, offering Isabel’s young female teacher a friendly smile.
“Ms. Spaulding,” she said, shaking his hand. “It’s a pleasure to meet you. Isabel, do you have all your things?”
“Yes, Ms. Spaulding,” Isabel said, gathering up a pink and white kitty-covered lunchbox and matching rolling backpack. “Hi, Zach.”
Zach took Isabel’s hand and led her toward the parking lot. “I didn’t realize you are such a fan of cats.”
“Not usually, but I make a special expectation for this kitty.” Isabel tilted her head to stare up at him. “Fairies hate cats. Even if Mama let me have a kitten, I couldn’t keep it because my friends wouldn’t like it.”
“Exception,” Zach said. He settled Isabel into the child booster seat Theresa had given him and got her seatbelt fastened.
Isabel frowned. “What?”
“Never mind.”
“I don’t like it when you talk to me like I’m a kid.” Isabel had long ago mastered the petulant pout.
“Isabel, you are a kid.”
“Zach, you promised.”
He sighed. “All right. You make a special exception. Not an expectation.”
“What’s the difference?” she queried in confusion.
“An exception occurs when something doesn’t conform to a general rule; an expectation is something that is anticipated.”
The drive from Isabel’s elementary school to the ice cream parlor took less than ten minutes. The child filled up the time with animated chatter, topics ranging from her favorite color of green to the superiority of chocolate pudding over vanilla.
“Without a doubt chocolate is vastly superior. Which reminds me, have you eaten lunch?” Zach asked.
“Yeah,” Isabel scoffed. “We eat at school.”
He frowned, following her into the ice cream parlor. “Well, how am I supposed to know that? And what’s with the attitude—you don’t talk like this around your mother.”
Huge dark eyes considered him. “Mama would ground me. You won’t.”
Zach chuckled. “Can’t or won’t?”
He received no answer. Isabel’s attention was riveted upon the rows of candy, bins stacked high
with every sugary treat imaginable. He attempted to herd Isabel past the confectionary section of the store but, in the end, he bought her a half pound of mixed hard candies in addition to a cotton candy-flavored ice cream cone.
“I don’t know how you can eat that,” Zach muttered, eyeing her ice cream with disgust. The neon pink-and-blue swirl drew his imagination to toxic nuclear waste.
“It’s my favorite. Chocolate is boring.” Isabel cast a pointed glance at his cone.
“Except when we’re discussing pudding,” Zach said with plenty of bite. “Speak for yourself, Munchkin. Chocolate happens to be my favorite. It’s a classic.”
“Borrring.” Isabel rolled her eyes. “Chocolate’s only better because they don’t make cotton candy pudding.”
“As you said.”
They moved outside with their ice cream to enjoy the warm afternoon sun. The September heat melted the ice cream, rendering it perfect for licking. The grassy areas of the Main Street Park were an oasis of green beneath patches of pine trees. A children’s playground was located on the north end. They sat on a park bench to eat and Isabel swung her feet back and forth.
“Do fairies like ice cream?” Zach asked.
Isabel frowned. “I don’t know.”
“I thought you knew everything there is to know about the Fae.”
She looked at him in that disquieting way of children and lunatics. “No one believes me. Not even Mama.”
“Adults are skeptical of what they can’t see with their own eyes,” Zach explained. “Most grownups don’t believe in fairies.”
Isabel giggled. “Most grownups don’t believe in werewolves but we are werewolves.”
He snorted. “Your logic is impeccable, chiquita. You must never tell non-shifter adults what you are, but even if you do they probably won’t believe you anyway.”
“Because we hide,” Isabel said.
Zach nodded. “Because we hide.”
“Like the fairies.”
“Like the fairies,” he agreed.
Isabel tossed her half-eaten cone into a trash can. “I’m full.”
“Me too.” Zach ate the point of his cone and disposed of the wrapper.
Isabel made a beeline for the swings. Zach diligently followed, prepared to push for all he was worth. He enjoyed the brief, albeit temporary, respite from the child’s relentless curiosity.
Would his child with Theresa be so precocious? Zach’s straying imagination took him on an unexpected turn into the realm of possibility. It wasn’t the first time he’d thought about having a family, but before it had always been an abstract concept. Now, he envisioned Theresa round with his child…and it pleased him beyond words.
“My fairy friend, Nikki, says that it’s okay for me to talk about fairies because the grownups won’t ever believe me,” Isabel said.
“I believe you.” Zach gave a big push that sent her swing higher.
As she swung back, Isabel flashed him a quick, disbelieving glance.
He shrugged. “I live in my imagination so I know what it’s like. My characters talk to me too.”
“What do they say?”
He flashed a wry smile. “Right now, not a whole lot.”
“But they’re still in your imagination,” Isabel stressed her point. “My friends aren’t.”
“They seem real to me.”
“That’s not the same.” Isabel pouted but pursued it no further. Eventually, she asked, “Have you figured out who killed the taxi driver yet?”
He grunted. “I think so.” Then, “No, I’ve no bloody idea.”
“I think it was his wife.”
Zach stared at the girl’s dark mane of hair as it lifted from her shoulders. He waited until she swung back and asked, “How do you figure?”
“Because, it’s always the wife or husband. You told me so yourself. It was the wife in your last book—Abandon All Hope.”
Zach groaned. “Isabel, please tell me you’re not reading my books.”
“No, but Mama reads them. And you talk to me about them all the time. Mama wants Inspector Anders to fall in love with the pretty lady from the place where they take the dead people.”
“The morgue,” Zach said. “Theresa and most of my female readers seem to want those two together.”
“Zach!” A familiar Spanish-accented voice called out his name.
Zach turned to find Mary, Theresa’s mother and Isabel’s grandmother, hurrying toward him. He smiled in greeting. “Good afternoon, Mrs. Sanchez.”
“Nana!” Isabel jumped off the swing, landing confidently on both feet, and flew into her grandmother’s arms.
“Izzy, my little love bug! How are you? Let me see you.”
“You’re an hour early,” Zach said, checking his watch.
“My doctor’s appointment let out early. Has Izzy been good for you?” Mary regarded Zach with the sort of motherly approval that set his ears burning.
“An angel,” Zach said.
Isabel promptly launched into a long-winded, furiously-paced account of their afternoon together. Zach waited patiently until the girl wore herself out.
“Thank you so much for watching my Izzy. Do you need to be going?” Mary asked.
“I should,” he said. “I haven’t written a word since yesterday and I still need to pack. My plane leaves tomorrow at seven.”
“Bye, Zach,” Isabel said, waving her hand.
“I’ll see you, chiquita.”
“Bring me a present?”
“Promise.” He crossed his heart.
Back at his car, Zach dug out his portable tape recorder that he used for keeping notes. He brought the microphone to his mouth and turned it on. “Not the wife.”

Zoltan stood in the middle of a patch of red roses. His eyes were closed, and he breathed deeply. Should she approach him? He furrowed his brow, fisted one of his hands, and brought it up to his chin. Her heart went out to him.

"Zoltan?"

His eyes snapped open. "Morgan? You shouldn't have followed me. Go away."

"You look awful. Can I help?"

He glanced at the moon and raked a hand through his hair. "I can't manage anymore. I must leave. Now."

"Then let's do so with dignity. Take my hand, and we'll walk back in there and leave through the front door."

His expression betrayed his struggle.

"I don't think I can. Even now I feel the tug of the moon. Its wicked light is draining the rest of my strength."

Morgan pursed her lips, knowing he had grown progressively weaker throughout the evening. Still, she offered him her hand. She wanted him to know she trusted him.

"Be strong just a little bit longer."

His eyes darkened dangerously. A look of warning crossed his features, but she ignored it. She could handle this. Her father could. Why couldn't he?

"Take my hand, Zoltan."

With a suddenness she didn't expect, he lunged for her hand, pushing it against the roses. The thorns on the rose stem pricked her flesh, making her bleed.

"Oh!" She brought her hand to her chest, but Zoltan pounced on her and grabbed her wrist. For a moment he studied her intently, then he opened his mouth. Long, white, pristine incisors hung past his lower lip.

Morgan's heart spiked with fear. He couldn't handle this. By God, the man was gone and had been replaced with a beast.
"Let me go, Zoltan."

He refused, pulling her hand toward him. She tried to tug it free, but he was incredibly strong. She couldn't break his grasp.
He brought her blood-stained hand to his nose and took a long breath.

"Sweet and coppery..." he said, his voice dropping to a husky whisper as he let the words trail away.

"Zoltan, let me go." Fear and panic laced her voice.

He flicked out his tongue and licked the blood off her hand. She tried to pull away. Instead of letting her go, he jerked her toward him, wrapped his powerful arm around her waist, and continued to lap up her blood. His sharp incisors brushed her hand. Fear thrummed through her veins. She couldn't break his hold. A glance at his eyes revealed all common sense had left him. Venom dripped off his elongated teeth.

"No, Zoltan, no..."

His teeth sliced into her flesh at the wrist. Her head spun. She pushed feebly against his chest and grew weak in his grip.

The pleasure was heady -- like that of a narcotic. Zoltan became one with her, his heart beating in time with hers. His life in Miskolc before the war came to life inside her head. She experienced his heartbreak and sadness, becoming one with him as she experienced his turning.

"No more killing. I won't kill again, ever. I swear it."

"Zoltan..." Her life force ebbed.

"Forgive me, Morgan."

He had satisfied his need to take, and her narcotic high drained away. She must take now if she wanted to live.

He offered her his wrist.

"Bite me. Take from me so you will live."

Morgan snapped her mouth open and sank her teeth into his flesh. The high returned, and she greedily took from him. In the back of her mind a man shouted her name, but she couldn't pull her attention away from Zoltan, or she would die.

PEN & MUSE REVIEWS:
Those who love paranormal romance with a dash of suspense and mystery will fall in love with The Count’s Lair.

"The Count's Lair" is Book 2 of the Budapest Moon series and picks up 6 weeks after where "The Hungarian" left off. Count Anton Varga, Duma's foil in "The Hungarian," has found a certain amount of peace in his heart and actively pursues the beautiful and talented pianist, Lady Amelia Andrassy. Both Anton and Amelia have to overcome inner conflicts and open their hearts up to love. It doesn't help Amelia that Anton has a dubious reputation - and that he has a secret. Will love help her to accept him for what he is – werewolf and all?

THE CHARACTERS

Anton dares to believe in love which opens his heart to many different emotions. His biggest obstacle is trusting in love.

Amelia must believe in the unbelievable to find true happiness. Both Anton and Amelia's resolve is tested time and again throughout the novel as the werewolf, Marcus, haunts Anton's every move.

The novel was my NaNoWriMo project for 2009. That year was my first year in participating in NaNoWriMo. It was a crazy, wild month, let me tell you. Thankfully, I was a winner coming in at over 56,000 words by the end of the month. Just recently, "The Count's Lair" was a silver award winner in the Reader's Favorites 2011 Romance: Sci-Fi/Fantasy category.

ENJOY THIS EXCERPT:
Count Varga looked like a tamed jackal. His hair was wind-tussled, and his overcoat accented his muscled physique. His scarf hung casually over his shoulders, too, as if it were just for show. She was completely disarmed by his full red lips, more vulnerable to his presence than she would have thought. Anton draped the cloak over her shoulders and snapped the front clasp. Sparks of warmth jumped off him, saturating her body. His smoldering sapphire eyes found hers. She adored his attention.

Bryant handed her a pair of gloves, her hat, and her scarf. She hung the scarf around her neck and put on her hat.

"Are you ready?" Anton asked.

She nodded, and he escorted her to his auto. The cold winter air nipped at her cheeks. It was only the first week of December, but Anton hadn't joked about the temperature.

They got in the back seat of his auto, and the driver took off. The auto was warm. Amelia put her gloves in her lap.

"Some people have set up a tent in the middle of the market and are selling goulash and warm apple wine. Do you mind having lunch there? I thought we'd take in the market's ambience."

"Not at all."

"I've missed you." He turned in the seat to look at her.

She smiled. "I've missed you, too."

"Did you get your invitation to the noble's ball?" he asked.

"Yes. I got it today."
"May I escort you?"

"I would like that," she replied. She'd like it a lot. Too much for her own good, but she wasn't prepared to admit that to him just yet. He already had unsettled her. It was exciting to be in the presence of a man so confident and secure. The last few weeks with Mikel, she'd thought he had avoided her because of the success of her piano concerts.

Paranormal/Werewolf Romance: The Hungarian

What I love about paranormal romance is that it blends my two loves – paranormal and romance. Growing up in the 1970's, I used to watch "Creature Double Feature" on Saturdays and I got hooked on vampires, werewolves, and zombies. As a teenager, I discovered Victoria Holt and her brand of gothic romance with spooky manors, and dark secrets. Drawing on these two influences, I brought them together for my novel, "The Hungarian," Book 1 in the Budapest Moon series.

WHY BUDAPEST?
In 1997, I was in the U.S. Army and deployed to Taszur, Hungary from JUL – OCT 1997. During that deployment, I had an opportunity to visit Budapest and I fell in love with the city. Budapest is a gem. Its architecture was preserved by the Iron Curtain of the Cold War. Budapest was the one place I've been to that made me believe werewolves and witches could exist. With it's exotic locale, dominant buildings, and Hungarian pride, it became the setting of my Budapest Moon series.

THE CHARACTERS

Hungarian Count Matthias Duma harbors a dark secret - he's a werewolf. Every full moon, Matthias transforms into a beast. Matthais is tormented by this condition and has no intention of ever falling in love again.

Enter Katherine Archibald. The young woman lives vicariously through her books, but when she meets Matthias, he challenges all her sensibilities. Mysterious, yet charming, she dares to break the battlements around his heart.

What I enjoyed about writing "The Hungarian" was bringing out the humanity in the characters. Matthias must learn to trust, and Katherine must learn to believe.

THE SHORT STORY

The novel was inspired by my short story, "The Wolf's Kiss," which won an Honorable Mention in the 2007 Writer's Digest Popular Fiction Contest in Romance.

BLURB:

Katherine Archibald is in search of a grand adventure. A young woman in late Victorian England, she wants to open up a book store in London and travel Europe hunting down rare books. Love isn't on her map.

Enter Matthias Duma. The Hungarian count captures Katherine's attention like no other man before him with his unusual gold-malachite eyes, his exotic features, and his command of the night sky.

After a night of intrigue during Katherine's birthday, she discovers the map does include love in the legend, but will the map lead her to Budapest and the dark, brooding Hungarian she's just met?

ENJOY THIS EXCERPT:
The door squeaked open and Katherine peeked over the top of her book. A tall, muscular man walked in wearing a white button-down shirt and holding his blazer. He paused, as if surprised to find her, and then walked toward the window, his stride easy. He moved with wolf-like prowess, his long legs taking cool, calculated steps as his unusual eyes surveyed her. Katherine bit the inside of her lip, returning his measured perusal with one of her own. His silence was unnerving, yet intriguing.

His eyes drew her to him -- malachite green with a gold ring around the iris. Dynamic. Expressive. Even now, as he looked at her, they softened and grew translucent. He stopped in front of the window and casually threw his blazer onto a nearby chair as if he owned the room.

"Hello," he said.
"Hello."
"You're staring."

"I am? I thought you were staring at me."
He chuckled. "Perhaps I was admiring you."

"Me?"
"Who else is here?"

Katherine pursed her lips as her insides warmed from the deep silkiness of his voice. He smiled and walked to her chair, slowly gliding around it, tracing his finger over the leather headrest, skirting her curly hair.

"What's your name?" he asked.

"And who is inquiring?" She tried to sound cool and composed, but she had to fight the nervous temptation to play with her hands.

"Romeo, perhaps?"
"Then my name is Juliet."

A teasing smile graced his lips as he walked out from behind her chair and glanced at a bookshelf before turning to look at her again.

"Would you fall for Tristan?"
"Only if my name were Isolde."

He walked over to a wooden table near the window and ran his long finger over a clay mock-up of Excalibur lodged in a stone. "What do you think of Arthur? Do you think it suits me?"
"Only Guinevere would believe your name was Arthur."

He crossed his arms, his eyes sparkling in the sunlight. "Would you believe my name was Matthias?"

"I might, if--"
"If what?"
"If I knew more about you."

Intro: Paranormal Author Stephanie Burkhart

Steph's pumpkin, Jack

Hi, I'm Stephanie Burkhart. I write paranormal, steampunk, fantasy, and contemporary romance as well as children's stories. I love coffee, chocolate, and lilacs. I'm very excited to be here on the blog today. ☺

Just a little about me: I grew up in Manchester, New Hampshire, and got my start writing comic books as a 6 year old. When I turned 18, I joined the U.S. Army wanting a great adventure. I became an MP (Military Police) and went off to Germany. I spent 7 years in Europe between 1986-1997. I've visited Berlin (before and after the fall of the wall), The Netherlands, Belgium, Paris, Venice, Salzburg, Poland, and Hungary. Two counties I wish I could have visited and hope to get there soon: Great Britain and Canada. I became a 911 Dispatcher for LAPD in 2000. My sons are 9 and 5. Finding balance between working, writing, and being a mommy can be a challenge, but it's a rewarding one. When I go to sleep, I sleep pretty heavy, so most of my story ideas don't come from dreams, but from germs of ideas.

I love writing paranormal, steampunk, fantasy and contemporary romance.

My paranormal titles include:
The Hungarian, paranormal, werewolf romance
The Count's Lair, paranormal, werewolf romance,
Danube in Candlelight, paranormal, werewolf romance releases: 1 NOV 2011
The Wolf's Torment, paranormal, werewolf/witch romance
Victorian Scoundrel, steampunk, time travel

Be Mused, story: Matchmaking Amusement, (fantasty/paranormal)

The Wolf's Torment, paranormal romance, Moldavian Moon Book 1 by Stephanie Burkhart

The Wolf's Torment is Book 1 in my Moldavian Moon series. I consider it a little darker than my Budapest Moon series. It was one of my most challenging stories and I personally consider it paranormal fiction with romantic elements.

Set in Moldavia, 1865, Constanta is a city snuggled up against the Black Sea. Moldavia is a Romanian principality. Crown Prince Mihai returns from England intent on fulfilling his duties. He needs to learn Moldavian politics and get married. Mihai has a secret though – he's a witch.

I picked Constanta for the setting because I wanted an exotic location where the reader might believe werewolves and witches would exist. In fact, today, in Romania, being a witch is an accepted profession subject to taxes!

Mihai has inherited his abilities from his mother who is deceased. He's ready to lean the art of witchcraft, but only has books to learn from – until Theresa enters his life.

Theresa von Kracken is his intended, and while she is a witch, she hasn't been trained. She must never practice witchcraft or she faces death. Her sister, Beatrice, is forced into giving Mihai witching lessons when Mihai's best friend, Viktor, is transformed into a werewolf. Further complicating matters is the fact Viktor is married to Mihai's sister.

THE CHARACTERS

The challenge in writing supernatural character is making them "human," despite their abilities. Mihai may be a witch, but he's under a lot of pressure to marry, build a railroad, help his ailing father, and keep his family safe from the werewolf Viktor has become.

Viktor, while not the main character, goes through a slow, yet pronounced transformation. He struggles to retain his humanity, but after several full moons, his will and inner strength is tested like he's never known.

Theresa struggles to find a place in her new world, finding a sense of purpose in helping the local orphanages. By the time Mihai realizes he has a true gem in Theresa, will Viktor's actions ruin his friend's happiness?

BLURB: It's 1865 in Moldavia, a country nestled against the shores of the Black Sea, and Crown Prince Mihai Sigmaringen returns after receiving an education in England. His best friend, Viktor Bacau joins him. Mihai is intent on modernizing his nation, but he's also a witch, and it's time he embraces his heritage. The tasks in front of him are many including getting married.

Lady Theresa von Kracken arrives in Constanta as Mihai's intended. Mihai has vowed not to fall in love again, but Theresa manages to break the battlements around his heart.

In an unfortunate twist of fate, Viktor is bitten by a werewolf. Viktor's transformation threatens everyone around him including his wife's safety and Mihai's happiness with Theresa. Viktor's bite is the wolf's torment.

Her voice was matter-of-fact, pricking at his faults, but damn if she wasn't beautiful in the firelight. The rest of his plans for the evening could wait.

He held up his glass. "Would you like a drink?"

"What is it?"

"Brandy."

She clapped her hands and a smile tipped the corner of her lips. "I've never tried it, but it smells like it would be an interesting adventure."

He chuckled at her lightheartedness and went to the hidden bar, disguised as a closed shelf in the library walls, and removed a clean glass. He poured her the drink and gave it to her, his eyes sweeping over her face, probing her soul. Her emotions were an open book.

She wanted him to touch her. She ached for it. She wanted him to drive the loneliness away. The thought of sharing a more intimate embrace with her was enticing. He held up his drink and they clicked glasses, sipping the amber liquid.

She didn't gag or choke, but swallowed hard and narrowed her eyes. "What a crisp adventure. I do believe it's warming my stomach."

He chuckled and held out his hand. She gave him the glass. He put it on the desk, then leaned against it again.

A burning curious look came into her eyes.

"Come here." His voice was raw and husky. She walked toward him slowly, her hips swaying.

"What are you thinking?"

"I'm sorry you were lonely."

She stopped in front of him and he lunged out and grabbed her waist, pulling her closer, settling her between his legs. Her body pressed against his and she put her hands on his chest.
For an instant, an intensity stole into her expression, an intensity he hadn't spotted before.

"I don't believe I've ever been this close to you."

"No, I don't believe you have either, but I rather enjoy it. I hope you do as well."

"Lent starts tomorrow."

"What do you say we do a little sinning tonight so we have something to be penitent for?"

Her face grew eager at the suggestion. Damn. His blood raced through his veins as his heart hammered in his chest. Desire for her overtook his senses. He had an intense awareness of her thrumming through his body.

"Such naughty thoughts, my Prince."

Desire smoldered in her eyes. He wanted to kindle that into a raging fire. For him alone. He claimed her sweet lips, crushing her against his body. She slid her hands up his chest
and clutched his shoulders. Her body tensed, needing release. He deepened the kiss, refusing to let her escape. God, no, he refused to let his woman out of his arms. Mihai traced the soft fullness of her lips and she parted her mouth for him. Lord, her mouth was soft and sweet and giving. His tongue explored the recesses of her mouth, coaxing her to explore his.

The Count's Lair, paranormal romance, Book 2, Budapest Moon by Stephanie Burkhart

Those who love paranormal romance with a dash of suspense and mystery will fall in love with The Count’s Lair.

My Writing Influences by Stephanie Burkhart

VC Andrews, Flowers In The Attic

Aside from writing, I'm also an avid reader. I've been reading since I was a little girl and some of my early reading included: Judy Blume, The Hardy Boys, and anything about dinosaurs and space.

As a teenager in the 1980's, I discovered several writers: Anne Rice, Victoria Holt, and VC Andrews. Rice can tell a stirring story with the paranormal creatures I grew up watching in the 1970's. My favorite Rice novels are: "The Witching Hour" and "Interview with the Vampire."

When it came to VC Andrews, I was enthralled by the gothic creepiness of the Dollanganger Series. Victoria Holt, though, sold me on the power of love and romance. I also adore her writings as Jean Plaidy and her novels about the Kings and Queens of England. She brought those stories to life by showing the humanity of the characters – both the good and bad choices.

After getting out of the Army in 1997, I gravitated toward reading romances because I liked the hopeful message that love brings. Some of my favorite romance writers are: Jillian Hunter, Judith McNaught, and Lisa Kleypas. Each of these writers captures a unique voice that appeals to me as a reader. They also write historical romance and I love the idea of escaping to another time and place.

Who are some of your favorite writers? Leave a comment with your email and I'll pick two people to receive a copy of my free read, "Moonlight Sonata," the prequel to "The Count's Lair."

EXCERPT FROM MOONLIGHT SONATA:

The door opened and Anton walked in exuding a dark, animal-like grace. His hair was wind-blown and his usually starched shirt was wrinkled, as if he'd slept in it. He had on calf-high boots with his pants tucked into them, but they were dull, as if he hadn't polished them in a day or two.

He simply didn't look like himself. Her eyes sought out his. The gold ring around his deep blue sapphire irises burned with desire. His lips curved into a cocky smile.

"Hello, Amelia."

She bit the inside of her lip. The rich scent of mulberries and spice hung around him, fueling a growing agitation in the pit of her stomach. He looked like a magnificent beast – ready to tempt her to sin. "Hello, Anton."

"I'm sorry I didn't call, but I wanted to see you."

She stood rooted in the spot next to the coffee table. Anton walked toward her slowly, his feral gait even, his expression full of confidence. He passed in back of her, pausing. She felt the heat of his breath on her neck. She didn't know what to say. She'd enjoyed his friendship and she had wanted to call him later this evening, but he seemed bolder, determined. He had the look of a man who knew what he wanted. Her hand went to her breast, trying to stop the nervous fluttering of her heart.

"I was looking forward to seeing you as well," she finally said.

He rounded the coffee table and stopped in back of the couch, putting his hands on the couch's backrest and looking directly at her.

Amelia swallowed. The look in his eyes was unmistakable. They danced with the flames of desire. For her?

"I've been giving what you said a lot of thought—" he began.

"What did I say?"

"You challenged me to be a better man."

"I did."

"Well, that's what I want to do."

"The Wolf’s Torment has it all, witches, werewolves, a vampire, princess and prince. This is paranormal romance at its finest... I found The Wolf’s Torment to be an entertaining read. I truly cared about the characters. I look forward to reading the next book in this series."

Joy Cagil, Sr. Moderator, Writing.com
"Although Wolf's Torment can be classified as a loosely historical paranormal-romance, the many underlying themes--such as the friendship dynamic, coming of age, family ties and troubles, and facing political realities, sickness, and death--give it a meaning deeper than an average genre book... This novel is not only a highly entertaining page-turner but also it boasts its author's mastery of fiction. I loved it."
