When characters stand up and demand attention

Loxane, a Shamaness and leader of Hunters in the Rys Rising series by Tracy Falbe.

She was meant to make a single appearance in Rys Rising: Book I but ended up in all four novels of the series. Her name is Loxane and her primary titles are Shamaness of the Kelsurs and the High Priestess of Onja. Loxane even made the cover of the third novel in the Rys Rising series.

It’s not that Loxane took over the series. She just earned a much bigger place in the cast than I had originally imagined for her. She was meant to add some exotic sexual energy to the chapter when Amar attends his first Thievesmeet. The Thievesmeet is an annual late summer gathering of outlaws and the hunter-gatherer Kelsur Tribe. The Kelsurs revere their Shamaness, and Loxane’s appearance is the major event of the Thievesmeet.

But then at the end of her erotic dance, she singled Amar out of the crowd and sensed that he had been in contact with a magical being known as a rys. She did this in front of Lax Ar Fu, Overlord of the Kez, who is waiting to spend the night with her in a ritual coupling that marks the peak of the outlaw celebration.

Because Loxane is a woman who gets her way, she naturally got away with her public flirting. And I was becoming a little infatuated with her myself and decided to work her into the saga.

Could I really ignore a woman like this?

A sunburst tattoo encircled her navel and tattooed eagles adorned her thighs and perched on her knees. Snake tattoos coiled around her arms and their heads were drawn onto the backs of her hands with forked tongues going down her middle fingers. When she turned, Amar saw an elk tattoo on her back. Its great rack of antlers spread over her shoulder blades and its snout reached to the small of her back. The animal had starbursts in place of eyes, and when Loxane began to sway her body, the elk looked to be shaking its head.

Although I wrote about Loxane over the course of many years, she always remained remote to me. This is because I am a product of civilization and not a nomad shaman like her. Loxane would deride me as a weakling born under a roof.

One last sizzling excerpt for you. Don't forget to leave a comment for a chance to win

Thanks so much for joining me today. I hope everyone had a fabulous Sunday, whatever you did. I got a lot done and even had time to do a little yoga. That always feels so good! Okay, let's have one last excerpt. This is from the first book in The Adventures of Star Lite series. Star and Adam, the hero and heroine, meet in a most unusual way. Leave me a comment and I'll pick one winner at the end of the day who can choose between a back list book (everything except Into the Magic)  or a hand-made bookmark goodie pack. (Goodie pack for US residents only, please.) Enjoy, and thank you for reading.

Thank you to the Goddess Fish for letting me join the party today. Your rock!

After a devastating fiasco on her wedding day, still-single Star Brite longs for peace and quiet to nurse her broken heart. Instead of the uneventful summer vacation she has planned, she's transported to a strange planet with even stranger inhabitants, and an irritating but sexy man named Adam who claims he's a magician. Star senses danger in this place, and her suspicions are confirmed, as the two humans witness a bizarre display of power from a mad king. They form an uneasy bond and work past their differences as they look for a way to escape, and attempt to reason with two sensuous pixies, who try to protect their ruler. When the king makes a foolish decision, danger threatens the entire planet. Not one to give up without a fight, Star reluctantly agrees to a sexual experiment, discovers her untapped powers of magic, and opens her heart to the possibility of love.

Esme began to rub Star’s neck, and Star sighed. Esme's strong hands felt good on Star’s tight muscles. Slipping away to la-la land, Star remembered she had a mission and pulled her mind back to the present.

“So, tell me about this party. Is everybody I saw at the dinner table a guest? Where do they come from?”

“Yes, they’re all guests from our home planet, Kastra. King Gaius likes to have company at his parties so he invites—” Esme suddenly stopped. “I’m not supposed to talk to you. I’m sorry. Here, I forgot to turn on the music. You just listen and relax. I'm going to apply a clay facial mask. We'll let it set while I work on your legs and feet. It will help smooth out those blotches in your complexion.”
Esme flipped a switch and a melodic, pleasing tune began to play.

Do I have a blotchy complexion? Esme needs to talk to those diplomatic relations people. Star knew she would get nothing more from the young pixie, so she let herself drift off and enjoy the experience.

Her mind wandered to picture Adam standing naked near the hot tub. She didn’t want to think about that particular scene, she needed to focus on a way to get out of there. But her brain had ideas of its own, and naked Adam would not disappear. It hardly seemed worth the effort to try to think of something else, and he really did look quite divine, so she let her imagination roam.

In her fantasy, she rose from the tub to greet him. She had the body of an Olympic athlete, and hair from a shampoo commercial. Her skin was certainly not blotchy and her teeth were white as pearls. There were no annoying pixies around for miles.

They hugged, a firm, loving embrace. Both of their bodies were warm. Adam’s hands travelled down her back and caressed her butt, squeezing her firm cheeks. She explored his body, touching every inch of delicious skin she could reach. His cock grew hard and pressed into her stomach and moisture formed between her legs. She stood on her toes and rubbed her pussy against his cock, eliciting a deep moan from him.

Their lips met and Star and Adam kissed, not one of those tender, sweet butterfly kisses that drove her crazy with wanting more. This was a hungry, passionate invasion, both of them tasting each other’s mouth, him biting her lower lip to just this side of pain. The kind of kiss that set her mouth on fire and almost left bruises, the kind Star loved.

His hand stroked her breast, cupping and squeezing the firm flesh, and just as he lowered his head to suck her aching nipple, Star felt something cold and wet on her cheek. Is that Adam’s tongue? She jumped.

“Sorry to startle you. The clay is a little cool at first, but it will warm up,” Esme said.

With a sigh, Star’s allowed her mind to drift back to reality. Damn, it had been a good long time since she’d had a daydream like that. Her pussy was wet and wanting, and raw desire throbbed through her body. Even though she was scared, something about this place had awakened her senses. She actually felt more alive and vibrant than she had in a long time. As annoying as Adam was, a deep desire for him coursed through her. His teasing manner in the hot tub had been for her benefit, she was sure, to help her relax and his words had been sincere—he really did think she had a nice body.

She would have smiled with pleasure had her face not been solidified by the clay mask. This sensation was a welcome change of pace from the emptiness that had greeted her each day for the past year, and Adam was certainly a delightful break from the men she knew. He was strong and seemed smart, without being a bore. His sense of humour, well, anyone who could keep his wits about him under these circumstances was extraordinary. She found she looked forward to their next encounter, clothed or not.

I decided to start out this book with a sizzling scene and purposely did not mention any names, to give it a hint of mystery. I hope you enjoy this excerpt.  Leave me a comment and I'll pick one winner at the end of the day who can choose between a back list book (everything except Into the Magic)  or a hand-made bookmark goodie pack. The woman lay panting, sweat glistening on her skin, the sun highlighting the pink streaks she’d painted in her pubic hair. He observed the slightly reddened places on her body where he’d bitten her, and he smiled. Damn, he loved pale, ivory skin. His marks showed so well. She had small breasts, but her nipples were large and formed deliciously taut, hard peaks, which now stood rigid, captured in a pair of his favourite clamps. Not too tight, just enough to apply a bit of pressure.
Those peaks were what had initially caught his attention about this woman. He’d seen her at the club, wearing a dress that plunged almost to her navel. A gold chain ran from one breast to the other, with a sparkling charm dangling from the centre. Intrigued, he’d asked her about this curious piece of jewellery. She’d told him it was a set of non-piercing nipple rings and asked if he’d like to see it. He had.
Now they were back at her home, those fabulous nipples his to enjoy. Since she was blindfolded, he could perform a little magic, quietly speaking a new spell he was testing. To his delight, it appeared to work. She writhed on the bed, thrusting her pelvis up.
“Baby, I’m hot, really, really hot. Stick your cock in me, or your fingers, or something. Damn!”
She was tied up, her wrists bound with a scarf to the bedpost. He didn’t doubt that if her hands were free, she would be touching herself right now. He stood at the side of the bed and ran his hands over her body, tugging on the nipple clamps. He folded a pillow in half and shoved it under her ass, then placed his hand on her pussy, palm covering her mons. He stroked the hair, pulling it lightly. He enjoyed watching a woman undress, to see if she kept her bush intact, or shaved it. He had no particular preference—they all looked lovely to him. Pink hair was something different—he hoped it wouldn’t rub off on his skin.
As he parted her outer lips, he touched her glistening clit, ever so lightly. It stood as pointy as her nipples, pink and glistening. Running his index finger between her inner folds, he wet the digit with her juices and rubbed her clit, increasing the pressure only minimally.
She whimpered her frustration.
“Come on, I’m ready! Grab a condom from the table there and fuck me. What are you waiting for?”
“Patience, patience.”
He stroked his cock with his other hand. Part of the fun of these experiments was to test his own stamina and see how long he could keep himself in a state of arousal. Slowly, slowly, he inserted one finger, murmuring the incantation again. Yes, definitely hotter. How glorious it would feel when he plunged inside her! With one more recitation, the temperature increased again. Sweat rolled off her body, drenching the sheets. He could smell her musky scent mixed with her perfume, something flowery, not really to his liking. He much preferred the natural smell of arousal.
Unable to resist any longer, he bent down and licked her, sticking his tongue deep inside.
“Sweet mother of… Fuck me right now!”
He slid a condom on his cock, then thrust it in, moaning as her heat enveloped him. He held this position, enjoying the energy of their two bodies connecting.
She howled and bucked, straining against the silk scarves. There may be marks there too, he thought fleetingly. Then her cunt clamped down on his cock and his sole focus was diverted to that spot and the superb feeling of wet, hot woman. He moved, long slow strokes to start, increasing the tempo in time with the pounding of her hips.
He ran his thumb over her nub, harder this time. She came with a loud moan and wrapped her legs around his body, her hands gripping the slats of the headboard. He stopped his movements for a moment, wanting to intensify the heat, but lust overcame him and he held her thighs and thrust till he yelled his own release.
Side by side, they lay in silence, the woman smoking a cigarette and blowing lazy smoke rings.
“Wow, that was awesome, baby. I was on fire. I’ve never been that hot before. Did you do something to me?”

A Party Pavilion virgin with a slightly steamy excerpt and a giveaway

How exciting! My first post at the Goddess Fish Party Pavilion! I'm also starting my first tour with them on Monday and I'm really looking forward to that. What a fun week this will be! Let me start by posting a seductive little excerpt from my featured book, Into the Magic.  Leave me a comment and I'll pick one winner at the end of the day who can choose between a back list book (everything except Into the Magic)  or a hand-made bookmark goodie pack. (Goodie pack for US residents only, please.) Enjoy, and thank you for reading.

******************

“Are you sure I shouldn't stay one more day?” she called from behind the door. “If you give me directions, I can do magic. Remember, on Porrima? We did pretty well, together.”

“No, I’ll worry about you and you’ll distract me.”

“I won’t distract you, I promise.”

Star came out of the bathroom wearing a short, see-through robe. Her bedtime garments usually consisted of old T-shirts purchased from the thrift store, which she wore until they had too many holes. For this trip, she’d splurged on this barely there wisp of lingerie. The short style flattered her figure, showing off her legs and hinting at more beneath. Star loved the way the chiffon caressed her skin. Her nipples hardened as the fabric slid over them.

Adam stopped his movements and stared at her. Star gracefully twirled, giving him a full-body view, and she watched his eyes darken and a slow heat flare in them. She suddenly ached for his touch.

“It’s new. Do you like it?”

“I like it very much. I like what’s in it even more. See? You’re already distracting me. Here’s my credit card. Call the airline.”

Star snatched the card from his hand and flounced away, but smiled as soon as her back was turned. He was weakening, she could sense it. He wanted her just as much as she wanted him, perhaps more. His eyes smouldered with lust that demanded to be satisfied.

While she held the phone and waited on hold, she watched Adam set up protection spells. He walked like a panther around her room, graceful and lithe, his movements sure and adept. He was in his element when he did magic. Why didn’t he want to practise it more? One of his many secrets, which she suspected would soon affect her life.

He had to tell her what was going on. She was certain they were meant to be with each other—she felt it in her heart and believed it in her soul. Why else would they have been thrown together on a strange planet for that wild adventure? Their paths had crossed for a reason, and she meant to find out why.

Her ruminations and pleasure at watching Adam were cut short when the customer service representative came on the line and took her credit card information. She could catch a flight early the next afternoon.

The call completed, Star joined Adam at the window.

“I never get tired of this view, no matter how often I come here,” he said.

“It is beautiful. So many lights. If I squint just right, I can turn them into a rainbow.

Adam laughed and put his hand on her hip. The heat from his fingers penetrated the thin material and made her shiver.

“I’m going to leave now. You need rest. It’s been a long day.”

“Don’t leave.”
She turned to face him, tilting her head to look into his eyes. Such beautiful eyes! They were deep brown, with flecks of gold, and right now they were filled with such longing that her heart skipped a beat.

“I really should go.” His voice, thick with desire, contradicted his words.

She moved her body closer to his, her breasts and stomach touching him, absorbing his warmth. The sheer fabric may as well not have been there. Rubbing her torso slowly on his, she reached around his waist, pulling their bodies tight together.

“Damn, you feel good. I could spend hours doing this,” he whispered in her ear.

“So, let’s.”

“No. If I start with you, I won’t want to stop.”

“So don’t.”

Star ran her fingertips across his chest, stroking the hair, caressing his nipples. She bent and took one in her mouth, sucking it, swirling her tongue around the hard surface. The taste of his skin made her pussy throb with need. She had never wanted a man this badly, had never been wrapped in such desperate longing.

“Star…” It was almost a cry of anguish, but she didn’t stop. Instead, she moved her mouth to the left side, teasing the slick point on the right with her fingers.

With a low growl, he cupped her chin and lifted her face, his golden-brown eyes blazing. He leaned her against the window and pulled her hands over her head. Holding them both aloft with one of his, he undid the satin sash of her robe with the other and ran his palm down her body.

Still holding her, he explored with his free hand, tracing the curve of her hip, the swell of her breast. Star closed her eyes and leant back, the cool glass of the window a sharp contrast to her hot flesh.

Adam slid his hand between her legs, fingers stroking her slick folds. One finger found her engorged clit and he brushed it, slowly, teasing. She moaned and tugged her captive hands, eager to touch him. He continued caressing, fingers searching, driving her mad with desire.

With a final tug, she freed her hands and wrapped her arms around his neck, bringing their bodies close again, desperate to have his skin on hers. The feel of his hard cock against her stomach caused another rush of heat, then his lips were on hers. His tongue penetrated her mouth, probing deep. Everything around her ceased to exist, except Adam. His scent, the taste of his mouth, the feel of his firm hands became her world.

When he broke the embrace, she nearly fell, so lost was she in his kiss.

He slid the robe off her shoulders, then turned her around and pressed her onto the window again.

So what do you think about series?

*Contest Info is at the bottom of this post!*

Series can encompass a variety of different things.  As a kid growing up, I loved the teenage mystery series—Trixie Belden, Donna Parker, the Hardy Boys, Encyclopedia Brown, heck, even the horribly dated Bobbsey Twins.  Nancy Drew was the one exception. Never could stand her. These books followed the same characters through a variety of adventures, hopefully learning a little something with each episode.  I graduated to Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple and the Mrs. Pollifax books when I was a little older, and those are much the same, except with adult characters and situations.  Then I discovered fantasy and science fiction. The Narnia books, Lord of the Rings, Robert Aspirin’s Myth Adventures, and so many more. Still the same concept though—same main characters, different stories.

But in romance, series usually don’t work that way. For a romance to be a romance, you have to take two (or sometimes more) characters from not being together, to their happily-ever-after. That’s pretty final. Although I have read a few great books where the romance continues to grow and evolve in a second book, (Jayne Ann Krentz has a couple good examples of this) that’s about the limit if each story is really a romance. So a series takes a different turn. Usually it’s a common world, town, family, or group (a Navy Seals team, perhaps) that have overlapping stories. Each book of the series features a different character finding that HEA.  So each book as a unique hero and a unique heroine. One of the great features of this kind of series is that you get to peek at the HEA of earlier couples. It can be kind of like catching up with old friends.

From a reader’s standpoint, I love series.  I love seeing that couple A is still together a few years later, maybe with children, or still helping to save the world.  I still have the first romance series I ever collected, Roberta Gellis’ fabulous Roselynde Chronicles.  She broke a rule in this series, too. The first two books had the same heroine. Yep. Her first HEA wasn’t so ever-after. Husband number one was much older and died while she was still in her 30’s, leaving her to remarry a man much closer to her own age.  I’m not sure you could get away with that in today’s market, but as Ms. Gellis was one of the founders of the historical romance genre as we know it, she did. I had the chance to meet her at last year’s RT convention, and practically genuflected at her feet.

Series have problems though. They can go on way too long. Then they run the risk of being repetitive or jumping the shark. There are a couple of very big names that I used to run right out and buy on release day. Now I get them from the library if I bother at all.  I totally respect author Linda Howard who said she wasn’t writing any more books in her MacKenzie (sp?) family series, because she didn’t want to have to kill off the parents.  Sometimes, you just have to let go.  And who knows? If she hadn’t, we might not have had all the NEW wonderfulness she’s written since.

As an author, I am still learning about the pitfalls of series. Writing the last of any series is hard. There’s always a lot I’d written in that can’t be changed, so I have to write around things I might have changed if they hadn’t been set in stone by previous books.  I have to really work to make the final heroine different from the others—can’t have them all blending together.  Even names are a bigger challenge. But sales-wise, there’s a definite plus. When a new book comes out, sales do spike again for previous books in the series. And when you’ve written a character who’s just too cool to say goodbye to, it’s nice to be able to give them their own HEA. Today I’m here celebrating the last (planned) book in my Urban Arcana  series from Carina Press, the first of which, Motor City Fae, introduced a whole new world, with elves and werewolves and wizards in Detroit. Motor City Witch was number two, and book 3 Motor City Wolf, came out last October. Motor City Mage, out March 12 wraps up the story arc. It is hard to say goodbye to old friends.

So yes, I’d have to say I’m in favor of the series concept, both as an author and as a reader. But if I ever drag one out to the point of absurdity, will somebody please let me know?

To return home, Lana and Des must flee through a series of unpredictable alternate realities, fighting enemies while trying to shut down the drug trade. Motor City Magic

*Contest Information at the Bottom of this Post*

When people think about settings for romance, Detroit is one of the last cities to come to mind. My hometown has a rough reputation, and much of it is earned. When I was dreaming up my Urban Arcana series of paranormal romances, though, I never thought twice about using Detroit as the home for elves, witches, werewolves and more. So why is the Motor City such a perfect backdrop?

Metropolitan Detroit’s over 300 year history is rich with industrial success, making it the home of numerous immigrant groups. That diversity could easily include other species. Who’d notice werewolves in Hamtramck (eastern European enclave), djinn in Dearborn (large Middle Eastern populace), or Fae in Corktown? The city is built over salt mines, and salt figures frequently in legend and myth. Now that most of the industry has left, there’s an air of gritty decay. All the abandoned factories full of rusting iron lend ideal settings for supernatural activities. Furthermore police and other city civil servants, understaffed due to budget constraints, often adopt a pragmatic “not my problem” attitude. As long as nobody’s getting hurt, it’s a whole lot easier to look the other way. Why worry about some guy with pointy ears or fangs when he isn’t causing trouble?

And yet, Detroit has positive attributes which often go unsung. There are beautiful parks, where werewolves could shift and run. The dynamic revitalization of the riverfront lends an element of hope and looks to the future. It's the hub of tremendous new research and web-based commerce. Finally, Detroit boasts a thriving arts culture with world-class museums, music, and restaurants to rival those in any other city. When you put all that together, why wouldn’t the Motor City be a hub for paranormal activity?

My Urban Arcana books, Motor City Fae, Motor City Witch, Motor City Wolf, and finally, out March 12, but available now for preorder, Motor City Mage, are set in Detroit and its suburbs, with occasional forays into the land Underhill, or Faerie and some other alternate realities. I love being able to mix the gritty real world with fantasy realities, but there are similarities. Both have political intrigue and are places where monsters exist, and yet both are places where a couple can defeat the bad guys, find their soul-mates, and fall in love.

Author of Motor City Fae, Motor City Witch, Motor City Wolf, and Motor City Mage

Watch Facebook and Twitter between now and March 12 for my daily updates with words of wisdom from Lana and Des of Motor City Mage. Also, leave a comment on any of my posts today to be entered to win the e-book of your choice from the Urban Arcana series.

Seductive, strong vixens + Excerpt from The Enchanted Meadow (R)

I’m not sure why but most of my heroines are more experienced sexually and more worldly than my heroes. This is mainly because my heroines are usually goddesses, faeries, vampires or some other kind of otherworldly being that is much older than the hero.
This isn’t typical of romances, or at least the romances I used to read that had helpless heroines. I can’t relate to helpless women so I can’t write helpless heroines. I like strong-willed heroines that don’t back down to opposition.
Alina, the tree faery in The Enchanted Meadow is more experienced than Taran, but she needs his help so in a way, she is vulnerable without being completely weak. She helps him as much as he helps her to overcome the curse, and the results of that curse in the meadow.
I realize some men don’t like strong women, which is why I like to write heroes that are comfortable in their own skin and don’t feel threatened by a smart, more experienced woman. Besides, it’s fun to have the confident heroine torment the hero a little bit when they first meet, to throw him off his guard. A little teasing and tormenting creates that sexual tension that romance readers love so much. I think characters like Scarlet O’Hara in Gone with the Wind influenced me. Her sharp tongue and wit left men open-mouthed with wonder. It didn’t hurt either that she was a beauty.
What hero can turn away from a seductive heroine that has it all—beauty, brains and butt-kicking attitude? Below is an excerpt from The Enchanted Meadow that introduces Alina, the seductive Tree Faerie.

Excerpt from The Enchanted Meadow, Rated R

The mist crawled toward him, caressing his body like nimble fingers, stroking his lips, chest, and encircling his member. His shaft throbbed with arousal under the otherworldly caresses. The copper-haired beauty came to him again, bringing a welcome smile to his lips. Her green eyes peered at him beneath gold-tipped lashes, beckoning him. Without speaking, she allowed her tunic dress to slip off her shoulders. It fell around her ankles landing in a heap on the leaf-strewn ground.

Moonlight cast a bright silver halo around her head, giving her the essence of a love goddess. Moonbeams splashed down her naked body, revealing curvaceous hips and swollen breasts that tempted him, awakening his lust. His erection pushed against his trews, painful and urgent.

Smiling, she kissed him, brushing her hands all over his body. His crumpled clothes joined hers on the ground in a disjointed embrace.

Her long, lustrous hair spilled to her hips in a fiery plunge, teasing his naked skin as she planted kisses down his chest and to his throbbing member.

She made magic with her tongue that no mortal woman could master, flicking it across his shaft at lightning speed. It felt as if multiple tongues brushed along his skin, the dancing flames set his body on fire. The unquenchable fire sizzled into an inferno, threatening to burst. He came in a thunderous orgasm, his body rocking from the force of the mighty eruption.

“Now it is my turn to pleasure ye, my fiery lassie.” He stroked her clit, lightly rolling it between his fingers. Her wetness glistened in the moonlight.

With his mouth, he explored her sex, relishing her sweet womanly scent of apples, rosemary, and a hint of roses. The exotic blend intoxicated him. Caressing her silky thighs with his hands, he moved his tongue in circles, flicking her clit in soft strokes.

Moaning, she arched her milky white hips, moving against his mouth in an urgent rhythm that matched their rapid heartbeats. Quivers shot through her body, and her climax pulsated around him. He captured her essence, her sweet nectar.

They lay under the moon and the stars in a sated embrace.

Tree Faeries

In my latest release, a short story titled The Enchanted Meadow, I decided to make my heroine, Alina, a Tree Faerie. The ancient Celts believed that since trees were the oldest living organisms in the forest that they were powerful and held the memories of the past. The Celtic Druids worshipped in forests, usually oak groves, and had a close relationship with trees.

Did their close relationship with the trees mean that they conversed with spirits living in the trees? Perhaps. And perhaps it was these tree spirits that taught them the secrets about tree magic, divination and astral travel.

Tree Faeries, or Dryads, are also called Tree Spirits, Tree Ladies, Druidesses, Hamadryads and in Gaelic are sometimes called Sidhe Draoi, which means ‘Faery Druids.’ Tree faeries appear as wisps of light, flitting from tree to tree. These playful, androgynous creatures are referred to as female. They prefer willow trees but can be found in all trees. Tree Faeries are associated with the element of air.

Since Tree Faeries are seen as wisps of light, I needed to figure out a way that my hero could see Alina. Some humans are more sensitive to otherworldly creatures and are able to see the unseen. I decided that my hero, Taran, had some druid training in his earlier years so he was able to see Alina as a human woman while his warriors could only see her as a bobbing light. Taran’s sensitivity to the supernatural also plays a key role in the plot.

Blurb:

Warriors from the Raven clan are sent to guard the king's cattle. They are unprepared for the strange, otherworldly happenings in the new winter grazing land, including nocturnal visits by a beautiful lass. Only their leader, Taran, can save them—if he remembers how.

Excerpt:

Alina wanted to cry out to him, but her throat would not form any sounds. The one who had betrayed her and trapped her in this tree had taken away her speech so she could not ask for help to escape her prison. So many centuries had turned, each season passing in a blur of muted colors, her hope fading. Now someone had come, a mortal who could help her, but she needed to communicate with him in some way. Sighing, she realized she was not even sure she knew how to break the curse.

He watched her now with curious eyes, unaware that she also watched him. When she concentrated all of her power, she could imprint an image of her face on the tree trunk, becoming one with the tree. Only he had seen her face in the tree bark, so she knew he was more than a simple warrior. He had the mind of a druid. Only the one who could help her would be able to see into other realms and pay such close attention to her tree. She sensed the affection in his caress. Shivers of pleasure shot through her body at his gentle touch, giving her a sense of hope.

She studied him, admiring the confident way he commanded his men even as he faced the unknown. He stood regal and powerful, the blue warrior marks he earned shadowing the austere planes of his handsome face. Long, golden-copper streaked hair plunged down his back in a wild tangle. She yearned to run her hands through his thick mane again.

As if reading her thoughts, he glanced back at her tree, his bright blue eyes darkening to a deeper hue in the shifting light, his face softening from its usual hardness. When he looked in her direction, he let slip his true feelings he hid from his warriors. Her heart sang with compassion for him.

She felt herself blush at his penetrating gaze. His eyes awakened that feeling of familiarity in her again, but she still could not place it. If she escaped her prison, she could go to him now. Frowning, she thought how she hated the tree that felt like a tomb. The world beyond the tree taunted her with its bright autumn colors, a world so full of life and freedom. She could not bear to look upon it any longer.

To help her bide her time, she thought about their coupling. Her body flushed at the memory. She recalled how wonderful his muscles had felt beneath her touch and the way he had kissed her, caressing her secret places with his skillful tongue, making her moan and quake. A twinge of desire flickered inside her at the thought of having him touch her again tonight.

When they discovered another missing cow, they would have to stay. At least she hoped so. She continued to hide some of their cattle to keep the warrior there so eventually he could help her escape.

At first, she only wanted to use him to help her escape, but now her body trembled with affection for the golden warrior. After he rekindled what had been dormant for so long inside of her, she began to yearn for him and his tender, passionate touch. Could she let him go? And if he should eat of the apples….

Blurb:

Three different women, one ancient curse…

An ancient curse is revealed, leading Domelch, Brigit and Cailleach into certain danger amid a web of deceit. Can they break the curse and put the shattered pieces of their lives back together?

Excerpt:

“Ungild, I am retiring to my room for the night. I will not need your services.” Cailleach concentrated on concealing her thoughts, hoping the old woman would not detect her deceit. Wrapping herself in shadows, she pretended to walk toward the hall to the royal quarters, but instead slipped silently into the woods.

She’d been careful not to use magic around the mortals, but tonight she had no choice if she was to test Aethelfrith’s heart. Concealing herself among thick bushes, she stepped out of her clothes. Her naked skin prickled in the cold autumn night, but the feeling of being naked filled her with a sense of freedom—freedom from the binding fabric, freedom from the laws of mortals.

Calling on her powers, she used all of her concentration and strength, aware of her weakness in this foreign land. Her body tingled with the transformation, her flesh twisted and shifted, sprouting black feathers.

The raven let out a harsh cry, ruffling her feathers and taking flight. Happiness filled her at the freedom this shape gave her to slip undetected through the night, soaring on wings across the treetops. The cold air bounced off her insulated body, her wings slicing with ease through a night illuminated by a full moon. The sounds of pounding hooves and jangling bridles reached her ears and she changed course, flying toward the river. Below outstretched branches, she spotted Aethelfrith and his band of warriors. They emerged from the woodlands into a clearing in pursuit of a stag.

Cailleach flapped her wings faster to increase her speed so she could keep up with the swift hunters. She recalled the thrill of hunting, her heart fluttering with excitement. The riders spread out around the fleeing stag in a skillful formation, cutting off its escape. The majestic beast fell under the might of the roaring spears.

Alighting on a nearby branch, Cailleach waited for the warriors to gather their prize stag, knowing they would probably stop to rest now.

A small fire sparked below. The warriors gathered around for warmth. Drinking horns gleamed in the moonlight, laughter carried up into the night.

It was time. Cailleach shrugged off the nervous jitters surging through her body, uncertain of what she wanted to happen. Spreading her wings, she landed on the ground, calling on more magic. Her body shifted, her flesh pulling and shaping into the sagging flesh of an old, ugly woman. In this tormented body, she did not have the same joyful feelings as she embraced in the raven’s body. The gnarled, painful joints twisted in a hideous angle, the naked flesh wrinkled and sagging. A sudden terrifying thought filled her that her senses about Aethelfrith were wrong. If he failed her test, she might not have the strength to change her shape back and she would be stuck in the hideous body.

It has to be this way. It has always been this way.

Naked and limping through the trees, she emerged before the warriors who sat in a circle around the fire. All heads turned toward her.

“Who here will give warmth to a lost, cold old woman?” Her voice sounded like a raven’s harsh croak. She parted her lips in a smile, revealing blackened and chipped teeth.

Theodbald looked at her with disgust. “Old woman, you will find no warmth here. Be off with you,” he barked, waving her away.

“Wait.” Aethelfrith stood, peering at her. “Take this to cover yourself.” He took off his cloak and approached her, draping it across her naked shoulders.

She looked at him, hoping he would see through the guise. Her chest tightened in apprehension. “Would you warm an old woman’s frozen lips?”

He gazed at her as if looking right through her. Cailleach’s heart quickened. He pressed a kiss to her lips, awakening the magic.

Her body changed, the bent, swollen joints straightening, the sagging skin tightening into the shape of a young, beautiful woman.

“What is this?” He stared wide-eyed at her.

“King of the land of Bernicia, I am Sovereignty and your seed shall be sown over every kin,” she said, hardly able to keep from revealing herself to him.

He peered at her, recognition glimmering in his eyes. “Frige?”

She gave him an enigmatic smile and called on the magic to change her shape into a raven. The cloak landed in a heap on the ground at Aethelfrith’s feet. Her transformation used the last of her powers until she could rest and gain more strength. The raven stared up at him and let out a parting croak. Flapping wings carried Cailleach away into the moonlit night, her thoughts troubled. She should be happy that he had the heart of a king, but something didn’t feel right.

A blanket of mist sparkled and shimmered beneath the ghostly splash of moonlight over the river dividing Bernicia from Gododdin. The fog emitted an unearthly radiance, parting as if opening a doorway. She tried to turn to avoid entering the strange mist, realizing it was a trap, but the fog surrounded her. In her weakened state, Cailleach’s magic was nothing more than a harmless ember that faded into a cold ash. She experienced a sense of confusion, the cold, wet mist capturing her.

Cailleach struggled to escape the trap. She sensed that Badb had tricked her, luring her here with magic. Badb knew Cailleach was unable to resist the temptation to test the prince for kingship and would be too weak after working such strong magic to be able to escape the trap. The fog encircled Cailleach with a memory, one she wanted to close her mind against. She tried to fight the powerful, magical pull.

I cannot escape from my past.

Samhain is coming...

Stonehenge

ALTHOUGH I don't know why, the place wasn't what I was expecting. When I first glimpsed it as we drove over the rise, I felt a moment's disappointment. It stood starkly gray out in a farmer's sunny field. I shouldn't have been surprised at the way it didn't impress. What was I looking for? Even I don't know what I anticipated that day -- Druids pacing? Lightning flashing? Magick?

DECIDING it was a normal place, after all -- nothing spectacular beyond its impressive size, I recognized it as just another tourist trap. Like the rest, there were mugs, books, miscellaneous souvenirs and food for sale. Digging in with all the others, I bought a mug and a sandwich. Then I picked up the electronic hand piece and listened to the taped program as I walked the circular path around Stonehenge. I took pictures with my digital camera, listened carefully to the narrative.

THEN something happened. I became engrossed with the ancient history. The information was interesting and informative, but something else happened--this place was far from ordinary. The monolithe was deceptive standing innocently out there in the unusual bright English day. The Stones stood proudly alone, warming in the sun, massive in an open field with tourists munching sandwiches and cameras all a-flutter. But there was something more.

IT was old, it was ancient, it was powerful. It spoke to me. It was more than the story on tape, more than large stones hiding their secret mystery of how they appeared in the stoneless region. Their mystical force engulfed me as I walked the circle, listening, looking, searching, learning. I was drawn back to a long-gone time when wizards were all-powerful and Mother Earth ruled. In that time, Man took care with Nature, respected and cajoled it. But when Man left the pagan temples to tumble and halted the blood sacrifices of old to sacrifice Mother Earth to our gluttonous needs, things changed. Now Man plunders Her and lays waste to Her bounty.

STANDING outside the aged stones, I felt the call to battle.

GLOBAL Warming is a unique and imminent possibility. Is it an eventual reality? Will the dark salty waves of the North Atlantic soon lap over the lowly terrain where Druids stood? Will the great Stonehenge be nothing more than a pile of rocks standing against the pounding waves of the North Sea?

WHEN I returned home I printed my photos and fixed tea in my souvenir mug. The images all had blue ghosts surrounding the stone where the sacrifices were believed to have taken place. I reached for the mug and it shifted toward my hand.
