Timeless Escapes: A Collection of Summer Stories - Author Ruth A. Casie - Giveaway

During this year's long frigid winter my critique partners longed to escape to some place warm, the Virgin Islands. Soft warm trade winds, the sweet smell of tropical flowers, the pungent taste of island cocktails. Ah... if only we could. But wait! There was.

If we couldn't actually escape to the islands we could take a virtually trip and that's exactly what we did. We created Star Island, a fictional island off the coast of St. Thomas. The small island became the setting for our short story romances.

I decided to take my story from real life. My brother and sister-in-law, Alan and Eloise, were married ten years ago in Atlanta. It was not the first marriage for either of them but this is truly a love match.

Alan is retired and Eloise is now Vice President of an all girls college in

Alan and Eloise's First Wedding
California responsible for student affairs. In getting their paperwork together for the California benefits program they found that their Atlanta marriage was never registered! Alan, always the jokster called to ask me to stand up for them at their wedding. What? You have to know Alan to understand that if this was going to happen to anyone it would be him. Of course I said yes.

So last October, the Sunday after the NJ conference, I flew to California for their second wedding. I spent a week with them and had a great time.

When Lita, Emma, Nicole, Julie, and I started to brainstorm our summer read I knew Alan and Eloise's story had to be part of it. I used their situation but that was all. Their true story is one of love and devotion and very happily ever after.

Timeless Escapes: A Collection of Summer Stories - Author Ruth A. Casie - Giveaway

Timeless Escapes is an anthology of summer stories that all take place on a fictional island off the coast of St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands.
5 Stories ~ 5 Romances ~ 5 Chances of Love
There are three authors that have inspired me, all for very different reasons. Clive Cussler writes adventure stories about Dirk Pitt, the NUMA operative who is the ultimate man of action. He’s always ready for the challenge, prepared to position his quick wits and brawn against any thorny problem.
Jude Deveraux’s Knight in Shining Armor introduced me to time travel and gallant knights.  It’s a powerful love story that’s pure and timeless. It literally spans the ages. Isn’t that the type of love we all want?

Elizabeth Peters’ Lady Amelia Peabody is a true heroine. Steadfast by her dashing husband Radcliffe Emerson’s side she is the brains who figures out the mystery. She proved smart women have a place in adventure and intrigue as well as keeping their man interested.
What authors have inspired you, or who is your go-to author for a great read?
Escape to the Virgin Islands where the bonds of marriage are renewed, friends become lovers, and new love is given a chance to thrive.

Leaving the Pack by David J.O'Brien - atypical werewolves and fasion trends

"What's it about?"
Everyone asks this, as you'd expect, when I say I have just had a book published.
"Werewolves," I reply.
"Ah, you're getting on the bandwagon!" they say. "Trying to ride Twilight's coattails. Everyone's reading books about vampires and werewolves these days."
It seems that people think I wrote the book thinking about what the next current fashion in novels would be. If only! If only I could write that fast.
In reality, I started Leaving the Pack in 1990. Back then, as far as I can remember, werewolves were the American one terrorising London, or were the wolf-like beings of Whitley Strieber's Wolfen, from nearly a decade before (we'll leave Teen Wolf aside, shall we?).
So if a species of intelligent wolves could exist, why not a race of men who were like wild beasts inside, whose hormone and pheromone production was affected by the moon? No reason. It seemed scientifically feasible to me.
I wrote a novella, and slowly expanded it into a novel over a number of years as I worked on other things, too. And as the years passed, I saw werewolf books and movies appear again. It's like clothing - you don't need to worry about your wardrobe not being in style. Just keep the outfits until they come back into vogue. You write what you want and sooner or later, someone will think it's the right time for it.
Werewolves and vampires are like denim jackets: they're never going to go out of fashion for very long. Romance is like blue jeans: there are lots of cuts, but it's essentially the same thing, and it's always in fashion. Put werewolves and romance together and you have a look that has lasted since Levi Strauss was wearing pocket watches.
But just like the Wolfen, my werewolves were different to everything I had seen and read about both before and after. They're not paranormal beings. They can't infect you; only kill you - albeit with extreme ease. But they only kill you if you upset them.
In short, they're real. So real that I had at one time considered writing "an Interview with the Werewolf," where I got this whole novel from one of their kind spilling the beans on the rest of his race.
And a part of me still sometimes wonders whether I might not get a knock on my door one of these nights, now that the book has come out, from some dark strangers inquiring exactly where I got my information from. If that does happen, I hope they will consider that I've shown them in a positive light. But I'll let them review the manuscripts for the next two novels, to make sure there's nothing disagreeable. I wouldn't want to upset them.

Blurb:
Nobody believes in werewolves.
That's just what Paul McHew and his friends are counting on.
They and their kind roam our city streets: a race of people from whom the terrible legend stems; now living among us invisibly after centuries of persecution through fear and ignorance. Superficially Caucasian but physiologically very different, with lunar rhythms so strong that during the three days of the full moon they are almost completely controlled by their hormonal instincts, you might have cursed them as just another group of brawling youths or drunken gang-bangers. Now at the point of extinction, if they are to survive their existence must remain restricted to mere stories and legend, but, paradoxically, they also must marry outside their society in order to persist.
The responsibility for negotiating this knife-edge is given to Paul, who runs the streets with his friends during the full moon, keeping them out of real trouble and its resultant difficult questions. Having succeeded for years, he finds his real test of leadership comes when he meets Susan, a potential life-mate, to whom he will have to reveal his true identity if he is ever to leave his pack.

10% of the author's royalties will be donated to WWF, the World Wildlife Fund.
Excerpt:

Paul turned his attention to the remaining man, lying on his belly, holding his face. He rolled him over and pulled his hand away to reveal a large gash on his left cheek, running from just under his eye down to the angle of his jaw. It was deep, with ragged edges, and was bleeding profusely.
The sluice gate inside Paul shut with the force of a falling guillotine and the adrenaline immediately began to rise once more. This time, however, it was impure. Mixed with vitriolic rage, it boiled dangerously. Paul let the man's hand go and stood up, whirling around to face the pack, his face grimaced with anger. The wound was obviously a bite, and the one rule of running with the pack was not to give in to the urge to seriously damage someone, especially in a way that would arouse interest, something a bite was sure to do. Once teeth were used, it was easy to inflict a mortal wound. That had to be avoided at all costs. There was just no room for such mistakes, and the pack knew it. This had not happened in a very long time. Paul had had to reprimand two of the others in the past and it had been an unpleasant experience for all of them. This incident now, just as he needed to think about leaving the pack in James’s hands, made him furious. He could not brook this behavior. He did not intend to leave James the job of controlling an unruly mob. He had to castigate. Lessons had to be learnt, however painful that was to be.
“Who did this?” he snarled.
They remained silent, avoiding his eyes as he glared at each one of them, his rage threatening to explode into violence.
“Who was it?” he roared, trying to expend his fury through his voice and lessen the chance of unnecessary physical action.
Sebastian took a deep breath and stepped forward, meeting Paul's eyes and holding them, ready to become the subject of his wrath.
“You stupid little fuck!” Paul shouted as he strode towards him, spitting the last word out from just in front of his face.
“Sorr—”
“Don't fucking speak. Don't try to say a word.” Paul stopped Sebastian’s apology by grabbing his throat. Sebastian stood there, his cheeks turning crimson as he struggled to breathe and then gave up, relaxing himself as much as he could. Paul knew he was trying to slow down the build-up of his own aggression, his own adrenaline, which would soon reach a level at which he would have to fight back. Paul ignored this. His own fury attained an intensity that Sebastian could never reach, would rend him if he tried to struggle. He heard the whisper approach him with its appealing message, a susurrus sweeping along the street from unseen alleys, rearing up out of the black water below him, tempting him, telling him to squeeze, to place his might in the locked knuckles and permit them do as they would. “Wield your power!” it whispered. “Subjugate!”
Paul continued speaking. “What have you been told?” He addressed the whole group. “What have I said about fights? The most important thing about these days? James? What have I told them?”
“No teeth.”
“No teeth,” Paul repeated, nodding, looking hard at Sebastian, who did not show any indication that he had heard. The epin eph rine ran through Paul’s arteries like acid, scalding his every cell as they cried out in concert, screaming for action. The voice whirled around him like a tornado, threatening to tear him from himself. Seductions and temptations reached out of the wind like hands and tried to take him into it, but he blocked them out, concentrated on the centre of his being. In that place was his reality, a knowledge which outweighed any coaxing or beguiling tones, a knot so heavy that it anchored him in spite of the gales about.
“What would have happened if you had bitten him a bit lower and cut his jugular? He would be dead, of course. And I would be in trouble if there were questions about a man being bitten to death, wouldn't I? And I don't like trouble. Especially, when it's not of my own making and the source of the trouble is not getting the same aggravation as me. And why would you not be getting hassle? Because you'd be dead, wouldn't you? And I don't like killing people. So don't make me kill you, all right?”
As he said this, he released his hold on Sebastian's throat, letting him fall to his knees and gulp lungfuls of air. He shook off the voice repugnantly and it instantly vanished from his mind, its whisper swept away along the river into the gloom. The gates opened and the anger began to subside once more. All that was left was a slight dizziness at the depth of the void and a bitter taste in his mouth. He watched Sebastian for a second, making sure he was in control and not about to attack. Then he looked up at the others.
“I think we both need a drink. Let's get out of here. The cops will arrive soon.”

The Mind's Eye - Giveaway and Character Fun!

THE MIND'S EYE by K.C. Finn

Release Date: April 1, 2014
Genre: Young Adult (Paranormal, Historical, Adventure and Romance)

A girl with a telepathic gift finds a boy clinging to his last hope during the war-torn climate of Europe, 1940.

At fifteen, Kit Cavendish is one the oldest evacuees to escape London at the start of the Second World War due to a long term illness that sees her stuck in a wheelchair most of the time. But Kit has an extraordinary psychic power: she can put herself into the minds of others, see through their eyes, feel their emotions, even talk to them – though she dares not speak out for fear of her secret ability being exposed.

As Kit settles into her new life in the North Wales village of Bryn Eira Bach, solitude and curiosity encourage her to gain better control of her gift. Until one day her search for information on the developing war leads her to the mind of Henri, a seventeen-year-old Norwegian boy witnessing the German occupation of his beloved city, Oslo. As Henri discovers more about the English girl occupying his mind, the psychic and emotional bonds between them strengthen and Kit guides him through an oppressive and dangerous time.

There are secrets to be uncovered, both at home and abroad, and it’s up to Kit and Henri to come together and fight their own battles in the depths of the world’s greatest war.

MEET THE CAST OF THE MIND'S EYE:

Kit Cavendish (age 15) Dream-casted as Georgie Henley

Kit is the central character of The Mind’s Eye, a girl with secret psychic abilities who can step into other people’s heads, look through their eyes and feel their emotions. She suffers from what was known in 1939 as Still’s Disease, which is actually a form of juvenile arthritis. This means that she has suffered a period of physical deterioration, so when we see her at the start of the book she is bound to a wheelchair and wishing that her life could be very different to the situation she’s trapped in. The Mind’s Eye is just as much about Kit’s war with her body as it is about the actual war surrounding the story. Kit’s condition is based on my own debilitating long term physical illness (M.E.) which presents a lot of very similar symptoms and difficulties in my everyday life.

Henri Haugen (age 17) Dream-casted as Aljaz Skorjanec

When Kit first connects her mind to Henri’s she finds him in Oslo, Norway on the day that the Nazis first arrive to take control of the city. Henri is a kind and brave soul but he can be impetuous and make snap decisions without thinking; not a clever move to make when you’re surrounded by the occupying forces. Kit takes it upon herself to counsel Henri through his troubles and eventually help him to escape the terror in Oslo so that he can do his part for the war effort. During this time the two youngsters develop a strong bond of friendship and romance. I was inspired to create Henri’s character after visiting the Resistance Museum in Oslo, Norway whilst on a holiday cruise. I was amazed by the stories of very young men who took it upon themselves to traverse the frozen mountains of Norway in order to cross the sea and join the British Army via Scotland.

Blodwyn Price (age 20) Dream-casted as Dominique Swain

Blod is not a character I expect you to like the first time you meet her, but I hope that as you read on in The Mind’s Eye you will come to understand her attitude and the life events that have shaped her into the moody, guarded young beauty that she is.

Steven Bickerstaff (age 29) Dream-casted as Dan Stevens

Doctor Bickerstaff forms a kind of enemy for Kit at the start of the tale, his harsh words and unsmiling attitude aren’t what she needs when she’s struggling enough already… or are they? Blod and Bickerstaff are my secondary main characters and I genuinely love the way their story unfolds as Kit learns to understand why they behave the way they do and discovers secrets about them she never thought possible.

Writing About Imperfect People:

The Inspiration Behind The Mind's Eye:

If there was ever an embodiment of the idea of the ‘troubled teen’, then it was me, but probably not in the way you’d think.

I wasn’t, for example, a smoker or a boozer; I didn’t stay out late or smuggle anything (or anyone) untoward into my room at home. In fact, I stayed in. A lot. I would come home from high school aged 15 and find myself crawling straight into my bed at four o’clock, out cold until gone six and still in my uniform with Mum calling me down for dinner. My entire life was a pattern of eat, sleep, school, sleep, eat and so on; not a scrap of energy or enthusiasm for life, waiting desperately for the time when I could throw off the shackles of the 9-to-4 school day and finally use what little pep I had to do something better with my life. A myriad of doctors and therapists told me that I was depressed and filled me up with drugs, packing me back off to school like that was the answer to my problems.

It took me a further four years to work out what was really going on.

At age 13 I developed what I now know to be called Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (M.E.), a debilitating physical condition that attacks every major system in your body from the nervous and digestive systems to the musculoskeletal, hormonal and beyond. Between the ages of 13 and 16 (what some would call the best years of your life) I went from being a spritely, bright child to a surly, aching, exhausted teen who saw every morning as just one more day of pain coming her way. I dropped out of school and spent eighteen months trying to recover from what I was still being told was depression and anxiety, but no matter what I tried I just couldn’t get better. I knew that there had to be another explanation; I just had to find a way to prove it.

For my 18th birthday I was taken away for a week’s holiday. I deliberately didn’t pack my anti-depressants, suffering a week of cold-turkey withdrawal in order to flush them out of my system once and for all. This is not a practice recommended by doctors and I don’t advocate it, but it was the only thing I felt able to do at the time. Coming home from that holiday I had a fresh perspective on my physical health, realising that I was never mentally depressed, but that my body was the one letting me down. I had an illness and it took me another whole year before I met a doctor who could put the label M.E. to my symptoms.

Armed with this knowledge I returned to college and then went on to university, all the while making my way through different doctors and different treatments until I could find one who would push to get the diagnosis I so desperately needed. I was 22 years old when the letter finally came to tell me what I had been suffering from for the last nine years. It was a relief, but also a sadness, the final confirmation that I am living with a condition that has no known cure and will be likely to affect me for the rest of my life. At the point when I received that letter in November 2011, I felt as though the life I had been wading through suddenly needed a new purpose and a proper direction, something I would still be able to achieve if and when my condition worsened.

So I started to write.

I have written several self-published books in the last twelve months and it has been pointed out to me repeatedly that each one of them contains characters that are physically limited, pained and/or mentally scarred in some way. This is no co-incidence, but it is something that was creeping into my work without a definite conscious knowledge; I think I simply found it more engaging personally to write about imperfect people. That was until I sat down to write my first novel for Clean Teen Publishing, entitled The Mind’s Eye. In this book my central character suffers from Juvenile Systemic Arthritis, a severe and debilitating condition that presents many of the same musculoskeletal symptoms that I face every day. Whilst I am not always bound to a wheelchair, the immobility that my character Kit faces isn’t just about her legs not working. The Mind’s Eye is an exciting wartime adventure with paranormal fun, but at its heart it is also a story about a girl just like me, struggling to work out how to find a place in the world where she can feel valued and still be useful to the people she cares about.

Scenes within The Mind’s Eye are a mixture of Kit’s psychic visions of the Second World War interspersed with her own struggles in her home life. I have a feeling that some people might consider those latter scenes to be the ‘boring bits’, the ‘filler’ that has to happen between the tense, exciting action moments. To me, however, I could take or leave the incredible and heart breaking scenes of war, because the real struggle that touches my heart is that of a lonely young girl quite literally trying to stand on her own two feet in a world where all the odds are stacked against her. When you read The Mind’s Eye, spare a thought for Kit and the life she has to lead every day, because her fictional creation represents countless other people out there who face physical and emotional struggles that ordinary folk can barely comprehend.

The real story of The Mind’s Eye isn’t that of the glorious Allies beating back Jerry, but of Kit Cavendish beating back the sentence that life has handed her with the newfound love and support of the people around her. It is a story that is very important to me and I sincerely hope it will find a place in your hearts too.

EXCERPT FROM THE MIND'S EYE:

We spent Henri’s birthday under a tree drinking orange pop and trying to talk about subjects that didn’t lead back to the war. The news of Clive and Ieuan had shaken Leigh out of his selfish reverie, so if one good thing had come from the darkness it was the fact that my brother had finally actually gotten to know Henri. He even sang Happy Birthday in what he called ‘The Proper English Way’, laughing so hard he could barely get the words out for lack of breath:

“Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you; you look like a monkey and you smell like one too!”

Henri laughed for the first time in what seemed like forever and a warmth settled in my chest, like things were finally going to get back to normal. When Leighton went to get more pop, Henri came to the tree and sat down beside me, putting a long arm around my shoulders and pulling me in. He kissed the side of my head gently, his warm breath sinking into my hair. He hadn’t tried to kiss me properly again even when there had been opportunity for it, and I was sort of grateful for that. As much as I wanted to feel that tingling, only-us-in-the-world sensation again, right now the atmosphere just wasn’t right. But we were always close to one another when we had the chance, I had gotten so used to his arms around me that it felt like some part of me was missing when he wasn’t there.

“I’ll have to go into the village tomorrow,” he whispered, “to pass my enlistment papers to the right people.”

An invisible blade sank slowly into my fragile heart, but I had always known this day was coming.

“It’ll take them a while to process it,” I said hopefully, “I bet they’ve already got loads of boys waiting to go to basic training.”

“Perhaps,” he said softly, his lips still resting against my head.

I turned sharply to face him, searching his deep brown eyes. “I don’t want you to go,” I said, racing to find his hand to hold it tightly.

“I won’t really be gone,” he replied, “You’ll always be able to find me.”

“That’s not the point,” I said, my curls shaking as I trembled, “This is dangerous Henri, this is war.”

“You forget where I’ve been already,” he said, turning his face away to focus hard on the distance. He kept a firm hold of my hand and gave it a good squeeze. “You came to my head in the quiet times, the safe times. But I’ve already seen the destruction, the danger and the death, Kit. I think there are two types of people during war: those who see the horror happening and run away, never looking back, and those who want to do something about it.” I felt his other arm pull me in closer against his strong body. “You know which type I am, so you know I have to go.”

I couldn’t say anything, because it was all true.

Born in South Wales to Raymond and Jennifer Finn, Kimberley Charlotte Elisabeth Finn (known to readers as K.C., otherwise it'd be too much of a mouthful) was one of those corny little kids who always wanted to be a writer. She was also incredibly stubborn, and so has finally achieved that dream in 2013 with the release of her first three novellas in the four-part Caecilius Rex saga, the time travel adventure The Secret Star and her new urban fantasy epic The Book Of Shade.

As a sufferer with the medical condition M.E./C.F.S., Kim works part time as a private tutor and a teacher of creative writing, devoting the remainder of her time to writing novels and studying for an MA in Education and Linguistics.

K.C. Finn signed with Clean Teen Publishing in late 2013. Her first book published with Clean Teen Publishing: The Mind's Eye was released on April 1, 2014. This will be shortly followed by the sequel, Leighton's Summer.

Let’s Do Another #Giveaway—CANDI’S BUCK!

CANDI’S BUCK is Book 4 in the Chestnut Rock Series!

Here’s the blurb for CANDI’S BUCK:
Candi Smith spends her days working her dream job as head chef in her brother’s new restaurant. The café’s early operating hours allow her a daily walk in the forest and time to visit her special place, the alcove. When a buck starts to visit the alcove as well, she learns there’s one thing better than being alone in the forest. Candi’s feelings for the buck are confusing but they become more unusual when she meets Aiden.

Aiden Montgomery is a zoology professor and a deer shifter. His job is rewarding, but a run through the forest in his buck form is the perfect way to end to his day. Forty is fast approaching and his age, combined with his scarred leg, are reminders he isn’t worthy of a mate. He keeps the loneliness at bay by drowning in projects for work, seemingly content with his life. When he sees Candi for the first time, and recognizes her as his mate, her youth and perfection persuade him he doesn’t deserve her.

Aiden is driven to spend small amounts of time with Candi, convinced his intense feelings will be easier to control if he gets her out of his system. The plan backfires and leaves the pair unhappy, despite the love they share. He knows they can’t be together, but Aiden feels he owes Candi the truth about their connection. Candi’s not as naïve as she seems and she has her own plans for her buck.
