Hey..There's a Demon Over There! (ADULT CONTENT)

Dakota Daniels is an exorcist. Or at least she used to be, until a demon destroyed her life, killing her mother and sending her into hiding. She never knows what's around the next corner or whether she'll live through the night.
Brady Knox, billionaire tech guru and media darling, is a man used to getting what he wants. Except when it comes to his sister, Sydney. She is the secret he never tells a soul. After all, how do you tell the world your sister has been possessed since she was ten years old without seeming like a lunatic?
When Brady seeks out Dakota's assistance, he expects to get what he wants. When she doesn't comply, he's willing to use every resource at his disposal-even if that means seducing her into doing what he wants.
Dakota's body yearns for Brady but she isn't easily fooled, and if she decides to help him it will be on her own terms-assuming they can both make it through the night with their souls intact.

So, Demon Within was my first foray into erotic horror. I spend most of my time in erotic paranormal romance or erotic fantasy romance, with occasional jaunts into the young adult world.

But I had such a good time doing this book that I'm not writing another erotic horror.  Have you ever given it a try? Do you like a little scare with your hot love scenes?

Comment and one lucky winner will get to win their choice of my backlist (this means when you comment, please go ahead and also tell which one of my books www.rebeccaroyce.com would be your choice if you win, and also include your email address. Thanks!)

Born in Ice - a futuristic romantic suspense - $10 gift card

The story line for this novel evolved, with mutiple changes and addiditons, from a dream I had a number of years ago.

Here is a blurb:

Pulled from an icy grave…into a world of doubt and danger.

Frozen in ice for seventy-five years, Zana Forrester suffers the agony of
rebirth to learn her son is dead, and her daughter's whereabouts is unknown.
The year is 2155. A man's soothing voice and gray eyes haunt her drug induced
dreams. When she recovers, she meets their owner and finds her heart in danger.
But, a relationship isn’t a consideration; she must find her daughter.

Brock Callahan is drawn to the beautiful woman taken aboard his salvage
ship. He's determined she'll be his wife and a mother to his young daughter,
but he vows not to love her. All the women he’s loved died. While
Zana searches for her daughter, Brock must protect Zana from the evil that
threatens.
The vehicle was a self-sealing model, one that upon impact sealed
the interior from water and gases, including oxygen. The purpose was to
preserve any life-form inside. On occasion, individuals found in bergs were
thawed, and life resuscitated.

In 2065 when widespread temperatures dropped to dangerous levels,
a drug was developed to help protect body tissues, under certain conditions,
from freezing. Individuals five years and older took a monthly dose of the
preparation. The medication gave cells the ability to be frozen and thawed
with minimal damage. Of course, there were exceptions, cases where the
procedure failed, but the success rate was over fifty percent.

Lost in thought, Brock started at Luke’s question.

“Do you know the location of the deactivation switch, Skipper?”

“Yeah.” Brock walked around, peering inside the darkened windows.
He couldn’t see much, but a shadow in front gave him pause. “Call the
hospital, and have them send a hermetic pod in case we find a body.” The
container would help preserve life if it was present. He was nervous as hell.
Always was when they pulled one of these babies out of the water. It was a
constant shock to see a human, frozen and resembling a figure in a wax
museum display, but finding bodies without hope for survival haunted him.

“They’ve got one on the way.”

He reached under the driver’s side fender well. The small box was
easy to locate. He twisted the lever, opened the container, and pushed the
button. A flurry of clicks sounded around the car.

Brock opened the door. A blast of cold air whooshed out. The faint
smell of death washed over him filling him with dread. He staggered back for
a moment. The first thing he noticed was the child’s seat in the back. Empty.

He drew near again and saw the driver’s seat was reclined. A body lay curled
on its side holding a bundle close.

His voice gruff, he called, “Bring us a light. Luke, open the doors on
the other side.”

Digger held the light as Brock leaned in to look at the bowed figure
on the seat. From the person’s figure and profile, there was no denying the
delicate features beneath the mask belonged to a woman. She was dressed
from head to toe in a silvery grey snowsuit with fur-trimmed matching boots.
Fur as soft and as gray as a dove’s wing edged her parka making her appear
even more ethereal. Dark lashes brushed her face covering, similar to a ski
mask, made with cut-outs for her eyes, nose, and mouth.

He carefully pulled the blanket away from the bundle and groaned at
the mummified features of what had once been a child. Oh, God, no. Not a
baby.

Blurb:

Bull Dawson, New York lawyer, mourns the loss of his daughter, who disappeared from a cabin in Fredericksburg, Texas four years ago. A history book found in his office safe leads him to believe she traveled back in time to 1888 Prairie, Texas.  He's determined that if she can time travel, he can too. Life will be different, probably hard, but practicing law can't be so difficult back in the Old West.
Widow Dipsey Thackson scratches out a living for herself and her young son on their farm. Shunned by the locals, she keeps to herself. When a man appears in her wheat field one day, life changes for the better. Then her brother-in-law arrives, claiming the farm is his and threatening Dipsey and her son. She fears for both their means of survival and their safety.
Her dilemma will take more than a knowledge of the law, but Bull vows to do his best to protect her and her boy.

Excerpt:

Dipsey walked back to the wagon and placed a foot onto the spoke of the front wheel to climb into the wagon. A snorting sound from behind her made her pause. Grabbing her rifle from under the seat, she whirled and peered into the field of winter wheat gently waving in the cool morning air. Sunlight glanced off the stalks giving the field a slight iridescence, but no movement caught her attention.
The noise stopped, then resumed with a loud bleating resonance. If she didn’t know better, she’d think Thomas was asleep in the wheat field, but she’d buried her husband two years past. Who trespassed on her land?
Rifle cocked, she stepped in the direction of the snoring. Thomas always said she could sneak up on Satan himself. She hoped her skill served her well today.
Lying on her precious wheat, breaking the stalks flat and making it useless, was a big, burly man. Wrapped in someone’s finely stitched quilt, he had a brown felt hat over his eyes. One arm lay across his chest, the other cradled a new-fangled model Winchester, so new the shine hadn’t yet worn off.
She snatched the rifle from his arm. The dang fool didn’t open his eyes. Dipsey thumped him on the shoulder with the butt of his weapon. He farted and rolled to his side exposing a muscled butt and legs encased in denims. She stumbled back a few steps. Disgusting man!

I hope you enjoyed my post.

So what do you think about series?

*Contest Info is at the bottom of this post!*

Series can encompass a variety of different things.  As a kid growing up, I loved the teenage mystery series—Trixie Belden, Donna Parker, the Hardy Boys, Encyclopedia Brown, heck, even the horribly dated Bobbsey Twins.  Nancy Drew was the one exception. Never could stand her. These books followed the same characters through a variety of adventures, hopefully learning a little something with each episode.  I graduated to Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple and the Mrs. Pollifax books when I was a little older, and those are much the same, except with adult characters and situations.  Then I discovered fantasy and science fiction. The Narnia books, Lord of the Rings, Robert Aspirin’s Myth Adventures, and so many more. Still the same concept though—same main characters, different stories.

But in romance, series usually don’t work that way. For a romance to be a romance, you have to take two (or sometimes more) characters from not being together, to their happily-ever-after. That’s pretty final. Although I have read a few great books where the romance continues to grow and evolve in a second book, (Jayne Ann Krentz has a couple good examples of this) that’s about the limit if each story is really a romance. So a series takes a different turn. Usually it’s a common world, town, family, or group (a Navy Seals team, perhaps) that have overlapping stories. Each book of the series features a different character finding that HEA.  So each book as a unique hero and a unique heroine. One of the great features of this kind of series is that you get to peek at the HEA of earlier couples. It can be kind of like catching up with old friends.

From a reader’s standpoint, I love series.  I love seeing that couple A is still together a few years later, maybe with children, or still helping to save the world.  I still have the first romance series I ever collected, Roberta Gellis’ fabulous Roselynde Chronicles.  She broke a rule in this series, too. The first two books had the same heroine. Yep. Her first HEA wasn’t so ever-after. Husband number one was much older and died while she was still in her 30’s, leaving her to remarry a man much closer to her own age.  I’m not sure you could get away with that in today’s market, but as Ms. Gellis was one of the founders of the historical romance genre as we know it, she did. I had the chance to meet her at last year’s RT convention, and practically genuflected at her feet.

Series have problems though. They can go on way too long. Then they run the risk of being repetitive or jumping the shark. There are a couple of very big names that I used to run right out and buy on release day. Now I get them from the library if I bother at all.  I totally respect author Linda Howard who said she wasn’t writing any more books in her MacKenzie (sp?) family series, because she didn’t want to have to kill off the parents.  Sometimes, you just have to let go.  And who knows? If she hadn’t, we might not have had all the NEW wonderfulness she’s written since.

As an author, I am still learning about the pitfalls of series. Writing the last of any series is hard. There’s always a lot I’d written in that can’t be changed, so I have to write around things I might have changed if they hadn’t been set in stone by previous books.  I have to really work to make the final heroine different from the others—can’t have them all blending together.  Even names are a bigger challenge. But sales-wise, there’s a definite plus. When a new book comes out, sales do spike again for previous books in the series. And when you’ve written a character who’s just too cool to say goodbye to, it’s nice to be able to give them their own HEA. Today I’m here celebrating the last (planned) book in my Urban Arcana  series from Carina Press, the first of which, Motor City Fae, introduced a whole new world, with elves and werewolves and wizards in Detroit. Motor City Witch was number two, and book 3 Motor City Wolf, came out last October. Motor City Mage, out March 12 wraps up the story arc. It is hard to say goodbye to old friends.

So yes, I’d have to say I’m in favor of the series concept, both as an author and as a reader. But if I ever drag one out to the point of absurdity, will somebody please let me know?

As a cop who keeps paranormals in line, Des has a hard time trusting them. So why does he want the beautiful werewolf Lana more than his next breath? She's mouthy, flamboyant and distractingly sexy—not the type of woman for a reserved mage like him. Lana admires Des, but she can't be with someone who won't take her seriously, no matter how much she'd love to rip off his dress shirt.

When a dangerous new drug shows up in Detroit, Des must locate the source, and Lana is determined to help. But their plan goes awry, trapping them in a demon dimension. To return home, Lana and Des must flee through a series of unpredictable alternate realities, fighting enemies while trying to shut down the drug trade. But if they're going to survive, they'll have to rely on each other, even though getting closer will add fuel to a fire that's already burning out of control...

Why Wolves? Comment to Win

Whenever I discuss my latest book, Sloane Wolf, people often ask me, Why Wolves? And I have to say, why not? Wolves are fantastic creatures that mate for life and are truly faithful to their mates (from what I've read), and we humans could learn a lot from them.

As it pertains to my book, however, it was rather serendipitous that I ended up writing about wolves. I didn't intentionally set out to do so, but a series of events conspired to make it happen. The first event came in the form of a book that was ultimately made into a movie that got me to thinking - and anybody who knows me can tell you that when I get to thinking, things begin to happen...in a writing sense that is! I can turn the smallest nugget of an idea into a story, if motivated enough to do so, and that is how this story started out, as just a nugget. So there I was, inspired by this other book/movie enough that certain scenes kept kicking up in my head (ahem, fight scene), but content just to imagine it in my head.

Until event number two happened. That would be a contest that an electronic publishing company was running with the theme of - you guessed it - wolves. And so I thought, why not? I had some interesting scenes kicking around in my head, the contest was for a novella length story, so I had enough to accomplish that. And with the help of event number three - discovering an article about gray wolves returning to Massachusetts after a100-plus year absence - a true story began to formulate with legends of wolves and why they "reappeared" in the state after such a long absence. Wow, I thought, this was really going to be something, if I could get it all together in time.

Trouble was, once I started writing, I just kept on writing and I over-shot the word count. One thing I forgot when I set out to enter this contest: I have never been able to write short. I keep trying, but I usually have so much to say, it doesn't conform well to short stories or novellas. Not wanting to cut anything to fit the guidelines, I simply finished the book for me. And by the time I was finished with it, I knew that I had to try to get it published anyway, I felt that strong about it. And after several fits and starts, I finally found the right publisher for it in Muse it Up Publishing.

So there you have it. The serendipitous events that led to the birth of Sloane Wolf.

Now for the Giveaway:

Comment on this post with an email (so I can contact you) and you will be entered to win an electronic copy of Sloane Wolf. You can also comment on either one of my previous posts here on Goddess Fish Pavilion, come back here and tell me you did, and get an extra entry.

The Vampire & The Werewolf: A New Orleans Christmas Excerpt & Contest

In late December, Ravenous Romance released my first m/m erotic paranormal, The Vampire & The Werewolf: A New Orleans Christmas. The tale came organically from the series, and several readers and reviewers had to see the tale of how Lawrence and Trevor met. Since they’d been together for five years before Lily came into their lives in A New Orleans Threesome, I already knew the story. The key was sharing it with others.

See below for contest information to win a deck of Tarot cards, but first here’s a look at this novella.

The Vampire & The Werewolf: A New Orleans Christmas

Vampires and werewolves don’t mix … or do they?

Before there were three, there were two. When a vampire swoops in to save Trevor from a rogue gang’s blood sport, the werewolf must fight his own inhibitions. The magic of New Orleans and the holiday season bring together these two unlikely lovers.

Available via Ravenous Romance, Amazon and other Online retailers.

Excerpt:

His limbs tensed with anticipation. The scent of pine needles and moist earth tingled his senses. Trevor flexed his muscles, loosening up, and trying to relax before they took off. Lawrence had suggested trekking out to The City Park for their escapade. While living in the city, Trevor had heard of the extravagant displays at Christmas at the Oaks, he’d never seen it for himself. He never had someone to share the moment with, let alone someone he loved.
Love. Yes, just thinking about the emotion used to set his heart to aching, wishing for a place to belong, and a family to call his own. Now, it made him think of Lawrence, and what they’d shared together. If anyone would’ve told him a month ago that he’d be living with a man, a vampire at that, in the French Quarter, well, who knows what he would have done.
As they drew closer to the park, the magnificence of the lights and rounded lanterns hanging from the trees drew Trevor’s attention. So bright that they blocked out the illuminations of the night’s stars. He marveled at Santa’s sleigh in red lights being pulled by a team of alligators. A surprised bark of laughter burst from his chest, and he covered his mouth, embarrassed at his outburst.
“Only in New Orleans would Santa enlist the help of gators,” Trev said.
“Helps him get through those soggy marshes in the bayou,” Law joked back.

Hope you enjoyed that little taste of The Vampire & The Werewolf: A New Orleans Christmas. Now, on to finish Book 3: The Voodoo King.

Contest: Leave a comment and email address, and you’ll be entered into a contest to win a deck of Tarot cards (U.S. shipping only). One other will win a .pdf copy of one of my backlist books. Good luck!

Unfortunately, I’ll be offline until later this evening. We’re celebrating my daughter’s 5th birthday at the park today!

Happy New Year!

Call it what it is... GAY FICTION Contest

Greetings fans, this would be Michael Mandrake presenting you with another post at Goddess Fish. Today I’d like to talk about something that came up on a recent radio I did with Blak Rayne, Patricia Logan, Sammy Jo Hunt, Andrew Grey, TreSa Sioux and of course, hostess Cassandre Dayne. We talked about the problem that we discuss quite regularly in the genre. The need to give gay fiction its own category.

You ask, what does that mean? Well, with some publishers, gay fiction regardless of whether it’s erotic or not falls under erotica. Not only does that do a disservice to the author but also to the reader who is looking for some hot sex and plat and instead, they don’t get that.

Why is it important?

Well, it’s beneficial not only to the author and reader but in my opinion, the publisher! You have customers coming to your site, looking for a gay fiction book. One with not a lot of sex but maybe one. They’re looking for a particular story, maybe a sci fi or a contemporary. Why is it you’ve clumped all gay content into erotica. NOT FAIR to anyone.

I don’t have figures t support this but, I would think a disgruntled customer means lost sales. You have done your gay fiction writers a disservice because now that reader feels they cannot come to your website to find good gay fiction.

What would be so hard to say GLBT? Or if you must, the fluffy names of m/m and f/f which means there is gay content or lesbian stories involved but if there’s not much sex, it doesn’t get lost in the erotica section.

Now, I speak not for myself really because all of my content is erotic but there may come a day where I want to venture into that realm of only writing a story with no sex but hints at it or a “closed door” scene just to get a point across. How come these have to be thrown in the erotica bin because it’s two men in a relationship?

In the world of art which includes writing, I’d expect for the publishers, especially e-pubs to be more accepting and open to calling gay fiction what it is. After all, “New York” (the term used for big publishers) doesn’t think that authors who’ve been e-pubbed or the e’s themselves actually count. So, we are the rebels against the majority, doing things different from the accepted norm. Why not take that next step? Give your readers and authors a clear view of the genre in which they read and write. Call it gay fiction. Give it its own category.

I’m sure it will be beneficial to all involved.

I’d like to thank GFParty Pavillion for having me here today. Please leave me a comment on your thoughts as well as an email and I’ll be glad to give away a copy of A Second Chance as well as the anthology I’m in from XOXO.

PG Excerpt

“Hello?”
“Hi, this is Robert McIntyre at the Daily Southtown. You left me a message?”
I heard the tone change in the man’s voice. “Robert, this is Jake Valenta, how are ya’, man?”
My mind was racing while my palms went moist. As in Jake, who just turned down millions to wait until June, Jake?
“Um, hi. How did you know where I worked?” I asked.
“Your friend Alex is good friends with my gal pal Lori so…”
Trying to keep it professional, I said, “Okay, Jake, what’s the reason for your call?”
“Hmm, well you did read the message right?”
“Yeah I did, what does that mean?” I twirled a pen around my fingers while leaning back in my chair.
“Well, in all the time that we went to Tulsa and OK State together, we never actually met. It’s a shame too, Robert, because we lost so much time dude. We both had to keep ourselves closeted though, so…” he answered.
“Wait, Jake, you said we had to…” I moved forward to keep from falling.
“Robert, don’t play dumb with me. You were aware that I was gay. Remember, Lori told Alex that…”
“Yeah but I didn’t believe it because…” I threw the pen on the desk.
“I know, because I play straight real well. Here’s a scoop for you Robert; I’m gay and always have been. Of course, if you print it, I will deny it. I need to play baseball at least ten years before I open that beautiful rainbow coloured door. Then again, if people stop acting like assholes and accept us for what we are, it might be sooner.”
Listening to Jake talk about his sexual orientation took me back in time. If only I had pursued him, if only I’d been less shy, if…
“Robert, you still there?” he chuckled.
“Yeah, I’m sorry Jake. Anyway, you were saying?” My pulse throbbed. The man I had a crush on for years was calling me.
“That’s okay Robert. Listen, I’m coming through Chicago to meet the team. They’re trying to get a deal together to draft me. I want to see you Robert. I…I have to see you.”

Thank you for an awesome day!

Good evening fans and readers of Goddess Fish!

As this fun filled day draws to a close, I'd like to thank all of you for allowing me to bring some manlove into your lives with these posts. Some of you may not want to read m/m or gay fiction which is fine because it is your choice, however, if you don't, in my opinion you're missing out on some very great stories.

And i'm not just talking about me. Rather, I'm not... *grins* As I said earlier, I prefer to stay grounded but there are a host of great authors who write brilliant tales just with the man on man element. Some don't even have a lot of sexual content if any at all. Still, the relationships in the story are a man pursuing a man and this my friends, if you are open minded, should not be a deterrent.

If you would, peruse the titles of gay fiction, not erotica. This is usually hard to find in all honesty and I'll be doing a post about that tomorrow at fellow author, Sam Crescent's blog.  Look at the m/m section and see all of what is to offer. Some of the best are there like GA Hauser, Sue Brown, Rick Reed, LA Witt, Marie Sexton, among others and read the content, the sensuality. I'll bet you'll find one that you're looking for. There is a vast world out there in m/m or gay fiction that has not been discovered so look for it.

Now, time to toot my own horn. *grins* My earlier post was about my characters with their complex plots. I cross over genres and you might see something that you'd like to read. Whether it be the heartwarming A Second Chance with 1 or 2 vivid sex scenes or Longing for a Normal State of Vertigo in the Riding the Rocket anthology where there is barely any sex at all.

The key is allow yourself to be immersed in a good story. You may not be a fan of gay fiction or m/m per se, but there are stories waiting for you there that you'd enjoy reading. Don't shun them because of the primary relationship, give them a try. You might like what you've read.

I'd like to thank Goddess Fish for allowing me to have this release party. Please leave you thoughts on any of my posts and I'll pick a winner that will receive a couple of free books. Thank you for listening and enjoy the rest of your Sunday!
