She couldn’t die. She couldn’t leave Jill with him. Somehow he would get away with killing her and Debbie, and he and Jill would live together. She couldn’t let that happen.

She brought her right hand up quickly. He let go of her hair and blocked it. She was ready with the left, landing her palm square on his nose. He dropped the knife, put his hands to his face and stood up. Bonnie rolled to the side and found the handle to the pot. Gripping it tightly, she swung and crashed the pot against Martin’s shin. He reacted by lifting his leg up. She scooted out from under him and got to her feet.

He came at her again, swinging his fist and hitting her hard just below the ribs. The air rushed from her body. She tried to inhale but her lungs wouldn’t co-operate. He swung his fist again, this time at her face. Ducking and leaning forward under his moving arm, she ran forward into his midsection. Her head meeting his belly pushed him back into the wall. Very quickly, she lifted her head, so that the back of it struck Martin’s chin. Still holding the pot, she backed up a step, and using both hands, swung it at his face. His knees gave out and he fell on the floor.

Bonnie found the car keys in his pant’s pocket and raced out. The rental agency tag on the key told her it was a Ford and gave a plate number. She found the car and unlocked the door. “JILL! JILL!” The car was empty. She ran around and opened the trunk. Empty. She stood next to the car and scanned the lot. There was blood on her shirt and jacket and in her hair. Running back in the building she went up to Debbie’s apartment.
