Book and Author Information with An Excerpt for The Sum of All

Author Bios:

Ever since she was young, Kiki Howell has loved to listen to a well-woven tale with real characters, inspired plots, and delightful resolutions. Kiki could spend hours lost in a book, and soon she knew that creating lives, loves, and losses with just words had to be the greatest thing that she could do. To that end, she pursued her study of literature and writing, earning a bachelor’s degree in English. She then followed in a Master’s program in Creative Writing.

“After a long break having my boys, I finally just had to write again. And, as soon as I gave the stories the space, they entered it. It’s both awesome and humbling to find the words in my mind become characters on a page and create their lives.”

She has now had over twenty stories published between seven different small presses. She could not be more thrilled or grateful to see her creations polished and out in the real world. Although, a bit of caution, most of her stories tend to hang out on the graphically sexy side of town. You can visit her athttp://www.kikihowell.com.

Emma Hillman never plans her stories. She just lets the characters have fun and hopes the ending will make sense. It usually does.

Besides being a multi-published author of erotic romances, she works full-time and lives in Paris with a (nice) husband, a (cute) little girl, and two sweet but (very) loud pets. She also reads far too much as the postman (and her banker) could attest, but shhhh.

For more information on her current and future releases, you can visit her blog at http://emmahillmanbooks.blogspot.com/ or chat with her on Twitter (@droptheglasses). She’d love to hear from you!

“Combine Vampire, Fey, Shifter and Sorcerer, add one pissed off witch and her friend, and what do you get? One hell of a hot and steamy adventure. Who wouldn't enjoy a romp with these four hot men? I know I would. The one thing Emma and Kiki did in this very short story is make it complete. Both the characters and the story are unique. Mae is strong, angry, and determined to forget. Es is the friend trying to calm Mae. Be careful what you wish for, you just may get it in spades. Enter Rafe, Marcus, Devlin and Julian. Oh my, the heat and the passion started steaming up my laptop. As a reader, I like story with my erotica. These authors gave me the total package. This story made me tingle in all the right ways like good erotica should. The second thing they did was give it an HEA ending. I loved it!

It is obvious that this collaboration between Ms. Howell and Ms. Hillman is a successful one! The only downside for me was that it was too short. Ladies next time give me more!” ~Mom Cat's Burning 5 of 5 shooting stars!~”

“I'm new to Emma Hillman's work but I'm quite familiar with Kiki Howell's and she certainly knows how to deliver. I was drawn right from the start as this hot explicit tale draws you into the fantasy. Four gorgeous men, two women, and a night that has nothing but pleasure on the agenda, will leave you wishing it was you in their place…in the end making me want this hot little read to go on and on, it's that good.” ~ Jennifer Labelle, Author of the Leather and Pleasure series~

EXCERPT:

“Another one? Mae!” Es huffed.

“Oops.” Mae eyed up the new man. He was a sure confirmation of what she’d done. In front of her stood a fair man, masculine but beautiful in every way. Her assessment was interrupted by Rafe’s teeth raking down the side of her neck and the shivers that started running up her spine. “Hey! No biting!” she finally remembered to say.

The vampire’s head drew back, and he stared at her nonplussed. “No biting?”

If she wouldn’t have had another visitor to contend with, she’d have laughed at his whiny voice. “No biting, baby. No blood spilled, etc. etc.. I am just not cleaning it off the carpet. Now,” She turned toward the blonde god standing in her doorway. “Welcome. What’s your name?”

The man’s eyebrow lifted. “My name is Devlin. I’m a Fey Prince, and I’m here in answer to your call. Where do you want to do this?”

She blinked. “Do what?”

“An impetuous and impassioned rite of sex, of course. That’s what you’ve called me for after all.”

“Impetuous?” her voice ended on a squeak. “Impassioned?”

“Rite of sex. Yes. So?” He stared back at her, his arms crossed over his chest. The toned forearms accented his six-pack abs. Ah, another shirtless man. So nice of them to come prepared. With his wings still extended and flowing gossamer feathers down to his jean-covered thighs, he looked more a modern god than just a mere prince.

“Back off. She is mine.” Rafe came to stand in front of Mae, the white of his eyes starting to turn red.

“Who says?” Devlin asked. He looked at the vampire like he would a new opponent and then with one shake of his head, clearly dismissed him. “So, where do you want to do this? I don’t have much time. I have to go back to my people.”

Mae tilted her head to the side so she could look at him from behind the vampire. His good looks were rugged, and yet, as crystal clear as his blue eyes. There was almost an aura about the man; too perfect if you asked her.

“Your people?” she repeated, the enormity of what she’d done finally getting through to her. She’d called all these creatures to her? What the hell had she done? She wondered a brief second as his wings receded inward.

She heard shuffling behind her and turned, only to find her friend trying to disentangle herself from the sudden attentions of the shifter. “Get off!”

“No.” He grabbed Es’s butt in both hands and drew her forward.

“I didn’t call you! She did!” Es pointed to her.

“So what?” He sniffed around her friend, his voice a growl once again. “I can smell your desire. Your scent doesn’t lie. You want this. You want me.”

Es gasped. “No, I don’t!”

“Yes, you do.”

What Songs Might Be Playing In Our Character’s Ears

For most of us, we have a song or two which really affects us, that even if the words mean something different to you than the way they were intended, touch you in a way you can’t understand. Yet, they define us, continue to rough out the raw edges each time we listen to them. Well, in The Sum of All, there are a lot of rough edges to be smoothed over as the competition is born and played and rules are broken and redefined.

With all of this in mind, we tried to pick those songs for our characters, the ones that would define them, affect them, etc.

Devlin (Fae): Last Man Standing by Trailer Choir

Julian (Sorcerer): Secrets by One Republic, Taking Over Me

Rafe (Vampire): I Will Not Bow by Breaking Benjamin; Highway to the Dangerzone by Kenny Loggins

Marcus (Shifter): Give Me Everything by Pitbull

Mae (Witch): Irreplaceable by Beyonce; I Need A Hero by Bonnie Tyler; Fighter by Christina Aguliera

Es (Witch): Firework by Katy Perry; Glitter In The Air by Pink; Beautiful by Christina Aguilera

We couldn’t get every song on the player, but here are a few!

Our Alphas in The Sum of All

One of the fun things about writing The Sum of All was getting to work not only with so many different types of men, but with different types of paranormal creatures too. As paranormal writers, it is near impossible to pick a favorite. In this story, we didn’t have to.

So, let us introduce them to you…

First there is Rafe, our very old Vampire. He is a smooth-talker, and quite the tall, dark and handsome one. Mae describes his eyes as chocolate as they come, but warm despite his deathly pale skin and ebony hair. He has that smooth ancient talk we love about old vampires, the way they slip back into an older, more polite style of language at times.

Next to the door is Marcus, our sexy as hell Panther Shifter. A sleek panther with black hair which when he is first standing at the door is so shiny they can see tiny wisps of moonlight reflecting off of it. There are many words used to describe him, but basically he is hot, sexy, powerful and sculpted. Not to mention the fact that when he shifts from his beautiful panther form he is standing there naked in all his male glory.

Third to Mae’s door is Devlin, our Fae. Actually, he is a Fae Prince. He is a fair man, the more blond hair, blue-eyed, masculine but beautiful in every way type. With his wings still extended and flowing gossamer feathers down to his jean-covered thighs, standing in the doorway he looked more a modern god than just a mere prince.

Last to come to Mae’s door, although he didn’t knock, was Julian, the Sorcerer. It is said that this older, distinguished man is a mix of George Clooney with a hint of Richard Gere. He comes to investigate Mae’s abusive use of magic. He’s Mae and Es’ elder. Thus, his power is significantly greater. He has the right to punish Mae for her lack of control and ethics. Only Mae is more mystified by his stormy gray eyes than afraid of him.

So, what do you think? They all sound yummy? Quite a set of men to have in your house having a contest to win time in your bed, right? You can meet them all in The Sum of All.

How The Sum of All, a co-authored novella, Came To Be, A Chat with Emma and Kiki

Kiki: Emma Hillman and I, Kiki Howell, met as fellow authors at eXcessica Publishing early on in my career. Somehow we got to talking. Will have to ask Emma if she remembers the very first instance, because, well I have a horrible memory, as she can well attest to. LOL

Emma: You were organizing reviews done by authors and I said I’d do one. In the end the author never responded so I didn’t do one, but we started talking. And then, you offered to review my first book, Location, Location, Location. And liked it.

Kiki: Cool, so happy to have her around as my memory. LOL I do remember that we became fast friends by email alone, as Emma lives in France and I live in the US. We started talking about writing and ended up critiquing many of each other’s works, but it soon moved past that, to sharing a lot about our lives, supporting each other in personal things, etc.. And, though we’ve never met in person, I consider Emma a very dear friend.

Emma: Right back at ya!.

Kiki: So, in all of this, especially in discussing each other’s stories, there was a point where I was considering spicing up my erotica like Emma did hers, and she was working her way into incorporating paranormal elements into her stories. There would also be conversations where I would praise her ability to create such real and gripping dialogue, whilst she would talk about my descriptions, etc.

Emma: I suck at descriptions, I really do. But I’m working on it.

Kiki: Yeah, well I’m still working on the dialogue too. LOL So, back to the creation of The Sum of All, over time, the idea was born to incorporate our strengths into one story. Of course it was going to be paranormal, but we hadn’t settled on what creatures to use. I did have the idea, as I am partial to witches, of having two best friend heroines and have each of us be one of their voices. In its simplest form, every other chapter has a different voice.

Emma: That didn’t last long!!

Kiki: No it didn’t. But, in theory, Emma became Es and I became Mae. This was the original idea. But as we wrote, both critiquing and editing each other’s chapters it really became hard to figure out who wrote exactly what.

Emma: Even when I reread it, I’m not sure what paragraphs I wrote. I take this as a good sign.

Kiki: I know! It is pretty amazing :) I do know that Emma came up with the idea for the contest

Emma: Because really, what’s better than four hotties competing in your bed?

Kiki: Exactly! Then, building upon my spell-gone-wrong idea. We ended up picking quite a few paranormal creatures as our alpha heroes: vampire, shifter, fae and sorcerer.

Emma: So everyone can have their favorite ;)

Kiki: I don’t know, I can’t chose *giggles*  Before I knew it, we were going past way past ménage and straight into foursomes.

Emma: Well, you know, you might as well make it hotter than hot!

Kiki: So true! I remember an email specifically which stated, “Don’t know how it happened, but they just ended up in this room together…LOL!”

Emma: Guilty as charged! You know there’s a good reason why I never plan my books. My characters always end up doing whatever the hell they want anyway.

Kiki: Emma has this wonderful voice and does snarky, hip, funny dialogue really well, so the verbal, testosterone-filled battles between our Alphas were a ton of fun to write too.

I think we were both really pleased with how it turned out in the end. And, if we could ever find the time now that our careers have taken on a new life all their own, I know there is a sequel in there.

Emma: So true! There’s so much we could do with a sequel. Now all we need is time!

Kiki: Someday! An amazing writing experience is what writing The Sum of All was, one I will always treasure.

Emma: I concur! And if anyone has questions on co-authoring, feel free to ask J
