Q&A With a Romance Author: Blended Families

by Danica Winters

To help spread the world about my latest release, Winter Swans, I have been answering reader questions. I loved the questions I received. Especially when they addressed the issue of blended families. I often write about the modern American family in which there are divorces, several marriages, step children and parents, and all those emotional issues that come along with the quest to find happiness.
I hope you enjoy this Q&A!

Q: I come from a blended family and am now thinking about getting married to my long-term boyfriend. My biggest fear is finding myself in a situation like my parents (I.E. having children, getting divorced, and having to face start my life over again). I don’t want to stop from living, but how do I get over my fears?
A: In my books, you may have noticed the presence of blended families. I, like you, have faced the reality that comes with the modern American family. We live in a culture in which happiness is one of our most valued assets (and rightly so). With this quest for happiness, comes the fallout of failed relationships, hurt feelings, and secrets. After facing the darkness, how do we move on?
A running theme in my books is the fact that we must constantly move forward. We can’t look to the past and use the memory of our injuries to shirk from the future. We all have fears and baggage and we should learn from not only our family’s mistakes, but from our own as well.
What can we learn from a failed marriage?
Many things, but first and most importantly is the Need to compromise.  We must learn to put others needs in front of our own. I’m not implying that we need to be doormats, but I am saying we must consider others feelings before we take action. Will your choice hurt the person you love? Will your secret come back to haunt you? Is it better to face the truth?
After compromise comes the need to Never resent the person you love. People make mistakes (and so do the characters in Winter Swans, Montana Mustangs, and The Nymph’s Labyrinth).  Lastly, we Must learn to truly forgive not only our loved ones, but ourselves as well. If you can learn to forgive (you don’t have to forget) those who have caused you pain, you will find it much easier to live your life and love with a heart not weighted by the troubles of your past.
Wishing you the best of luck with your upcoming engagement (I hope)!

Christmas Wishes and Dreams of French Silk Pie

Is Lee ready to start living again?
by Danica Winters
Christmas is one of my favorite holidays (closely followed by Halloween, but this could be thanks to my love of all things chocolate). I love the icy pine-scented air that reawakens your winter dulled senses the second you step outside. I love the spirit of thankfulness, good tidings, and joy.
But what if we weren't so lucky? What if Christmas only reawakened the wounds of our past?  This is exactly the case for my newest character, Lee Llewellyn.
In Christmas Wishes, Lee has lost her son and is forced to face another holiday season with only her memories for comfort. In Lee, I tried to create a character in which every reader with a child, or who has ever dealt with a divorce, could relate.  Life can be hard when you must go through it alone, but what can help? For Lee, this was her love of French Silk Pie.
Without spoiling anything, I can tell you that sometimes dreams of French Silk Pie can blossom into unexpected Christmas Wishes.
I hope you get the chance to check out my newest short story--I'm sure you will finish this story with your cheeks aching from laughter and your heart filled with the joy of Christmas!!
Wishing you the happiest of reading,
Danica Winters

Why the Phantom? Or How the Phantom Snagged Me

I've been asked a lot as to why I chose to add heat to the Phantom of the Opera. It's fine the way it is, right? It doesn't need fiddled with! Valid questions. The book is a classic for a reason. I get it.

Here's my take. I like to know what happens behind the closed doors. I'm nosy. When the movie gets to the part where there's the long kiss then the fade out, I want to know what happens next. Did they go bow-chicka-wow-wow? Go home? Just kiss? I want to know!

Another thing about me is when I'm reading a story that's really plugging along. It's getting tense and the sexual energy is high, then BOOM. Door closes. I'm the one slumping in my seat and frowning. I want to see what happened! Did they go all the way? Or realize being friends are better?

In the case of the Phantom, there's a lot of sexual energy teeming there. And there are so many places where, with just a little nudge, the characters could jump right into the hot stuff. So that's where I ran. Yep. I read and reread the story enough that I felt I'd immersed myself in it and looked for those ways to weave in the heat. I didn't plunk the hot stuff in there. Nope. I sought ways to weave it in so it felt organic for the reader. I researched the clothing of the time to make sure the divesting went correctly.

I worked hard to ensure the book is a good read for those who want a little heat between the characters. One thing I have to add, the story does stick to Gaston Leroux's original text. I didn't change the ending and I didn't take any parts out. So if you're looking for a hot version of Leroux's work, then this is where you want to go! I hope you enjoy the book as much as I did when I was writing the hot scenes!

The Classics Exposed…

A chance sighting at the Opera, fated love, and three lives in turmoil.

One man pledges to own her, while another wants her heart. The Opera sets the stage for romance and intrigue. In the catacombs below the building lives a man rife with sorrow and passion. The Phantom. But he’s not content to live alone. He wants to possess the one woman who can set him free.

His Christine.

Viscount Raoul de Chagny doesn’t believe the rumours of a Ghost living below the Opera. He only has eyes for Christine, his childhood friend and first love. Together they embark on a sensual journey of discovery and fiery desire.

But she can only have one man. Will love raise her up or tear their world apart?

*GIVEAWAY* Partying with Arianna Skye- Wings of Desire - PG 13

It's great to be here partying with you all! Thanks to Goddess Fish for offering this great opportunity!

I’m excited to announce the re-release of my first novel, WINGS OF DESIRE. You may know me in other circles as Sidney Ayers. I write snarky paranormal romances under that name. Arianna Skye, on the other hand, is my more erotic—yet still snarky—pen name.

WINGS OF DESIRE was originally published in February of 2010. I recently had the rights turned back to me, so I decided to take the plunge into the self-publishing pool. Because self-publishing has a notoriously bad rep, I treaded carefully. I hired a professional cover artist and even hired an editor to help me re-edit and tweak the book. I even hired someone to help format the book. I love technology and am a self-professed computer geek, but more time I spend on the technical aspect of producing a book, it takes away from the time I need to actually WRITE the book. With all the research I've done and steps I've taken, I’m very confident that my book will not fall into that murky part of the pool that people try to avoid.

WINGS OF DESIRE is a fantasy erotic romance with an undertone of Celtic mythology. I’ve always been fascinated by all things Celtic so it was only appropriate that I’d write about the mythology. Oddly enough, I have no Celtic roots that I am aware of. My dad is Dutch, and my mom is German. Maybe in another life?

The eBook version released early. I was planning on waiting until April, but everything moved so smoothly, I made it available in eBook on Valentine’s Day. The print version just showed up on Amazon Saturday (March 3rd). So join me in re-welcoming WINGS OF DESIRE to bookstores.

Here's the Blurb:

Rhiannon Kinsley's life goes from boring to downright crazy when a freak lightning bolt strikes her laptop. To make matters even more bizarre, strange words and symbols flash across the computer screen and she hears a mysterious voice. Time to call the men in white coats! Then Cerne Silverwing, an intriguingly sexy man, appears. He insists she's a faerie princess whose fate will determine his own. What a crock! Now she knows who really needs those white coats.

With the Dark Faerie forces threatening their kingdom, Cerne kidnaps Rhiannon and brings her to Fey, a land where magic knows no bounds. He's performing a duty to save his kingdom and nothing more--a duty that will bring him his wings and the strengthened magic that comes with them. If he doesn't unite with the princess as her consort, those wings will never grow. But this princess grew up in the land of laptops and instant messages, and she's convinced they're both crazy. Despite their differences, the two are thrust together to defeat the whip-wielding Dark Faerie Queen before she takes over their kingdom. Passion and peril aside, will Rhiannon and Cerne discover their true destiny?

Excerpt (PG-13):

"Okay, where are the hidden cameras? This is getting old really fast.” Rhiannon tapped her foot. "I know you expect me to believe you because you're some super-hot sex-god, but I think you'd better go—before I call the police.” Reaching across the sofa, she grabbed her cell phone.

Cerne caught her hand in his and gave her a heated gaze. "I didn't want to resort to this,” he said, his voice thick and heady. "But I've run out of options.” He pulled her against his hard-muscled body. With his thumb and forefinger, he lifted her chin.

Clenching her fists, she bit her lip. Tingling numbness filled her every pore. She attempted to pull herself from his embrace, but her body wouldn’t cooperate.

"Let me go! You're frightening me."

"It's for your own good and the good of your people, my sweet.” He traced a finger lightly over her lips. "Soon you'll understand.” He lowered his lips to hers and gently nibbled. Coaxing her mouth open, his tongue swirled with hungry strokes along hers.

She moaned softly as her traitorous tongue danced with his. Lessening his grip on her arm, he allowed her to press closer and rub her bikini-clad breasts against the hard ridges of his chest. Her nipp les pebbled against the spandex of her swim top.

Stupid nipples.

She twisted her fingers in his dark mane, pulling him closer. Heedless of what she knew was right, she intensified the kiss. He hoisted her up onto his lap, letting her straddle the rock-hard erection that filled his trousers. Grinding her hips against his, she reached down to unfasten and untie the garment.

He pulled her hands away. "No, leannan. I just want to kiss. The joining must occur at Beltane—in Fey.”

"I'm not going to Fey—”

He reclaimed her lips. Intoxicating warmth spread throughout her body while he licked, sucked and nibbled. She gasped in pleasure and let his tongue probe the cavern of her mouth again. Light as a feather, she sighed in deep contentment. By God, was she floating? Closing her eyes, she allowed him have his way with her.

"I'm sorry,” he breathed against her lips. "It was the only way.”

"What—” Her eyes flickered as spots danced before them—until darkness took over.

As some of you may or may not know, this week is Read an eBook Week. So, to help spread the word about eBooks, I'm actually offering this book for free . Today (March 4th) until Saturday, you can download WINGS OF DESIRE absolutely free at Smashwords. Simply use coupon code RE100 when ordering.

Adult Excerpt:

He looked even better close up though she damn well wasn’t going to tell him that. He had a swelled head as it was, considering all the honeybees that swarmed all over him. She mentally gathered her defenses. If she didn’t know better, she would have thought she was in lust with Rodrick, impossible as seemed from the way they sniped at each other. Shaking her head slightly, she felt his gaze move to her and heard his startled breath as she walked up to the porch.
“Hey, Rod, slow night?” Jax asked. Her eyes drank in the way his muscles bunched under his t-shirt. She felt her stomach clench, though it could have been the anticipation of food that waited inside the dark mahogany doors. The way he was watching her had her nerves on edge. She didn’t know what the hell his problem was, but Jax was determined to get in and out with her order before Rod pushed her buttons. She just was not up to dealing with him tonight.
“Yeah, seems everyone is getting ready for the Halloween costume dance tomorrow. What are you up to tonight? Got a dinner date?” Rod growled at her, his eyes shining with a glow that almost made Jax take a step back before she caught herself. Shaking her head, she said, “What the hell is wrong with you tonight? I was going to have dinner with Grady, but he got short-staffed and had to cover tonight. I just wanted to see if I can grab a take out from your mom.” Jax marveled at how normal it was between them. Though she thought the hair on his arms bristled at the thought of her on a date, it probably was her imagination. Rod wasn’t interested in her, just the ones who wanted a good time and an easy lay.
“I am sure my mom would love to give you something since everyone knows you can burn water without even trying.” The smile that tugged at his lips had her eyes go wide then narrow in annoyance.
“What the hell would you know about cooking, you jackass? I bet you couldn’t make something if your life depended on it,” she sneered. Her hands closed into fists and she was tempted to smack him for being so damn annoying. If she didn’t know better, she would have thought there was a smile lingering on his smug face.
“Oh, are you challenging me, Jax? Can’t take the fact that I may actually know something you don’t? Want to take that to a test?” Rod leaned forward, stroked a finger down her nose, and said softly, “Afraid that maybe I can do something that will make you readjust your opinion of me?”
Jax was stunned by the clenching of her pussy as he traced his finger down her nose. If she didn’t know better, she could have sworn there was a flare of interest in his eyes; though it could have been that she was moon-mazed or something. Jax tried to still the weak-kneed response to him touching her as she tried to form an annoying response.
“You can boil water? Oh, my god!” Jax looked up at the darkening sky and then back at Rod. “Wow the sky hasn’t fallen yet. Did you pay off Heaven or something? Has Hell frozen over and no one told the Devil?”
The smile that played on her lips had him growling low in his throat. Jax didn’t know what to think when Rod yanked her to him and said, “You have a death wish don’t you Jax? You really don’t want me to show you that I can do that and so much more.” His voice was low and husky; Jax felt her bones turn to mush as he nipped her ear. He turned her on, no two ways about it and damn it, why him? He has to be the most annoying man on this planet yet he also was sexy as sin and damn it to hell and back, he made her want him with every inch of her being. Trying to shove away from him was like trying to hit a rock with an open palm. He was an immovable object and his eyes, she could have sworn, glowed faintly.
“Will you please let me go, you ass?” Jax tried to keep her voice strong and pissed off but dang it; he was making her stomach do flips every time he nipped her ear. “If you really want to prove to me you can cook, fine. I swear it is like your male ego got in a snit or something.” She huffed and blew her breath out when nothing else seemed to make him let go, though if she were honest with herself, she liked his hands on her body. Still, it wasn’t like she was going to tell this idiot that. No telling what else he would do with that information.
“Is it possible that I can go grab some food before I die of starvation? I swear if that was your goal tonight, Rod, you are not doing a very good job.” Jax said as she felt his hands glide down her arms then let go, the lack of his touch almost had her keening for more. This attraction she had for him was getting out of hand, especially since she and Rod rubbed against each other like oil and water.
Her treacherous body leaned into him before she caught herself and as she glared at him, she didn’t know what the hell was going on tonight but for some reason tonight he was determined to drive her insane.
“Go get your take out, Jax, but tomorrow, make no plans for the evening. I got something to prove and frankly, I am more than a pretty face, Jaxon. I think it’s time for you to see what else I can do besides be the resident “Lathario” as you so charmingly call me.”
“Fine,” She snapped at him, disgusted with her at the way her body aroused from the way his voice. “If it makes your fragile male ego happy to prove something, come on over and frankly it better be edible please. Nothing frou-frou or stuff that I cannot pronounce for god’s sake. I get home about six so come by after that.”
The next thing she knew, he leaned over, snatched her from her spot on the sidewalk and smiled as her eyes widened. “Jaxon, if I didn’t know better, I would say you are intrigued by me making dinner for you. If this keeps up, I think I am going to have to show you some of my other hidden talents.” Then before she could form a coherent thought and punch him, he leaned forward and laid his full wet lips on hers, teasing her with a light caress of his tongue and with light firm kisses until she was panting and flushed. Before she could form a sane thought or even think of pushing him away, she kissed him back, teasing him with hard kisses as her tongue dueled with his as her arms wrapped themselves around his waist. With one last reluctant kiss, he stepped back. His eyes glittered in the moonlight and Jax saw his arousal strain his jeans. “Now the deal is set, Sweets. I will be there around six-thirty so don’t be playing the ’I am late’ game, I will be waiting for you.” Then he sauntered away back into the Inn, leaving her body primed for something and ready to kill him.
