Launch Party: Soul Bound

My final post of the day is about my new paranormal romance, Soul Bound. Thanks to all of you who read my excerpts and watched the trailers. And thanks again to Judy and Marianne for inviting me to the party!

Blurb:
It's been years since Seattle cop Jessica Hammond thought of the boy who broke her heart in high school. So when she is caught in a hail of bullets and facing certain death, she has no idea why it's Nathan's face that flashes into her mind as she prepares to die. Jessica survives unharmed and is deeply unsettled by the experience. Desperate to escape her thoughts, she jumps on a plane to Vegas.

The intrigue deepens when she discovers that Nathan is also there, performing his New Age magic act in a large casino. Drawn to the show, she is mesmerized by him. When Nathan takes her to his bed and unleashes a different kind of magic, Jessica knows that the fates brought them together. But Nathan can't protect her from the curse of his heritage and Jessica soon learns that loving him could take her life.

Excerpt:

“I need a volunteer from the audience.”

Nathan Cain’s midnight blue gaze slid along my row of seats, crawling ever closer to me. I tensed; sure I could almost feel its approach. But it didn’t land on me, not straight away.

“Will it be you, Madam?” Nathan said to the audience member sitting to my left. The edge of his mouth lifted in wry humor when the woman shook her head so vigorously, my seat wobbled beside hers.  His gaze shifted to the man on my other side. “How about you, Sir?”

My heart beat once, maybe twice, before Nathan's stare found me, as I knew it would.
“Or will it be you...Jess?”

Pinned against the back of my seat by no more than the intensity of his gaze, I didn’t react at first to the sound of my name on his lips. Seattle seemed a million miles away and high school almost as many years ago, and he had no reason to remember me the way I did him.

Nathan strutted to the edge of the stage, the shape of his long legs outlined in almost obscene detail by black leather trousers. The shift and roll of the clearly defined muscles shaping his torso and abdomen told me his feet were actually on the ground but, with the dry ice swirling around his shins, I could swear he floated towards me like some errant spirit. A tangle of silver crucifixes, gothic charms and skulls with ruby eyes, suspended from thick chains around his neck, swayed hypnotically across his alabaster skin as he moved. His
face creased into one of the half smiles I remembered so well and I knew he was coming for me.

I swallowed hard when he crouched to put a hand on the floor of the stage and leapt to stand in the aisle in front of me in one fluid, catlike movement, his stare never wavering. He stalked towards me and reached for my hand before I had time to let out the breath I'd been holding. He leaned over my seat, blocking the glare from the gaudily lit stage and sending his large frame into near silhouette. Yet his kaleidoscope eyes still sparkled, their dark blue flecked with gold and brown, reflecting the soft glow of the house lights.
I experienced a moment of déjà vu. If I had the power to look away, I wouldn't have been surprised to find I was still a sophomore, sitting next to that empty seat in English class, waiting with pounding heart and baited breath for him to walk in to the room.

Nathan's dark, shoulder length hair fell forward when he reached down for me, casting his pale, almost Messianic features, wide mouth and high cheekbones into stark relief. His touch on the back of my hand sent a sizzle up my arm, kick starting my brain into action and my heart into a sprint.

“Pick someone else,” I hissed at him, trying to warn him off  with the kind of stern look that worked on the perps back home. Except here, I didn't have the uniform, my gun and a shield to back it up. He simply smiled, and wrapped his palm around my wrist. I resisted the pull but his fingers gripped tighter, gentle yet firm, and I had no choice but to comply. I stumbled and put my free hand against his chest to steady myself, snatching it back when Nathan's hot, slick skin burned my palm.

“Don’t you trust me?" The deep, honeyed tones of his voice still had the power to mesmerize and before I could gather my wits and repeat a plea to be left alone, he turned to the audience. “Come on, Ladies and Gentlemen, give her some encouragement.”

The Vegas crowd, already very impressed by Nathan’s brand of New Age magic, and high from too much sun and free booze, erupted into rapturous applause.

This is what you came for, stupid!

I tried to ignore the taunts of my inner, angst ridden teenager, the one who had never gotten over the loss of Nathan – the one who had taunted me into coming here tonight with a plan to seduce him. The one who hadn't allowed for the fact that Nathan's magnetism might have multiplied so much so, that I would still feel like a gawky kid beside him.

The captain had insisted I take some time off until the shrink said I was fit for duty. I should have known to keep my mouth shut about the voice I'd heard, but post traumatic stress robbed me of my common sense I suppose. A month spent sitting at home watching daytime TV drove me stir crazy, so I followed the wild impulse to get out of Seattle and leapt on to the next available flight to anywhere. Until I saw his name on the billboards lining the route to my hotel from the airport, I didn't know Nathan would be here too. Random luck had brought me to Vegas, but now I was here...and he was here and, well, maybe everything happened for a reason.

"Don't be scared, Jess. I'll look after you."

Nathan's breath caressed my cheek and I started, surprised to find him so close. Jess. Nobody had called me that for years. Not since the summer after he'd left town, taking my heart with him, and I'd forbidden anyone from uttering that word ever again. To hear my old name on his lips took me back in a way nothing else ever could. For a moment, just for the briefest second, the glitz and glamour of Vegas faded away and all I could see was the mysterious and enigmatic young man with the spiky hair and the sad smile who had ignored my fragile teenage heart up until about six months before he moved away.

"What do I have to do?" I whispered, conscious of the strangers watching our every move.

"Just help tie me up, that's all." A suggestive glint in Nathan's eyes did nothing to make me feel better, despite the enticing image of him bound and at my mercy that flashed into my mind. His gaze flicked over me and I prayed the hot weather hadn't frizzed my hair. Taming my unruly curls into a sleek sheet of burnished bronze had not been easy. But I'd wanted to look good without coming across like I'd tried too hard, and smooth, sexy hair, tight but not too obvious black jeans and a simple white peasant blouse had been all I could come up with at such short notice.

"I don't remember you being this much of a wuss at school."

I didn't let the challenge slide. "I'm still braver than you, Cain."

The corner of his mouth hitched up into another quirky grin and his fingers tightened around mine. "I've told you before, Jess, people with brown eyes shouldn’t try to tell lies."

A thundering guitar riff tore out of the speakers, filling the theatre with sound and leaving no chance to protest further or come up with the kind of sassy reply I wanted to give him. Acting like a frightened little virgin wasn't part of the plan. Okay, so I didn't actually have a plan, but if I did, squirming like a bug under a microscope definitely wouldn't be part of it.

Excerpt from Wild Ghost Chase by Ericka Scott

Come along for a wild ride~

Excerpt from Wild Ghost Chase

“Tragedy. Oh. So much tragedy,” Irene Hopkins wailed as
soon as she stepped out of the long black limousine. Tears glittered
in her eyes and threatened to spill over. “I felt it the moment
I drove on to the grounds. There has been so much pain
and suffering here.”
Blah, blah, blah. Monica resisted the urge to roll her eyes.
Irene certainly knew how to play the crowd and make an entrance.
She may have been a farce as a medium, but she had been
cleverly marketed by the network gurus. Long frizzy blonde hair
framed her face, and she wore long fake eyelashes to bat over her
big baby blues. Monica would almost bet her paycheck no male
viewer would notice Irene’s eye color. No, their attention would
be focused about a foot below her chin where her breasts threatened
to spill out of the tight red leather bolero jacket. Lord help
them if the one large button straining to hold the fabric together
popped open on national television. That event would give a
whole new meaning to ghost ‘bust’ing.
Enigma lifted a green duffle bag out of the trunk of his bright
red Miata convertible. He was even more beautiful in person than
on television. Although handsome was a more appropriate term for
a man, beautiful was more correct. His features weren’t the least
bit effeminate. He reminded Monica of a well-constructed piece
of art. Emotion caught in her throat and an odd ache clenched
her insides. The same feeling a Monet painting, diamond Tiffany
bracelet, or a hot fudge sundae elicited. To her embarrassment,
his green-eyed gaze caught hers and held it. The ache became
deeper, an almost physical pain of need. Why? What about him
affected her this way? The six feet of rippling muscles under a
skin-tight thermal shirt, or the way his tight jeans hugged his
butt and thighs? And no, the well-defined bulge of his crotch
didn’t make her breath hitch in her throat or her heart pound
in her ears. The attraction was his smile. A low heat built low in
her belly. When his grin widened, she was sure he knew exactly
what sort of reaction he’d elicited.
Damn him. Monica tore her gaze away from Enigma and
focused on inventorying the equipment in her black shoulder
bag. When she was satisfied she had everything, she balanced
the purse on the tailgate of her pickup truck.
Research about Harrington House and the family hadn’t
turned up much information. Amos Harrington, a ship’s captain,
had built the structure in the mid-1800s and lived there with his
wife and two daughters. One of the girls had died young, the other
had married and inherited the house, which had been in the
Harrington family ever since. Monica had discovered no documentation
of any ghostly phenomena over the years. Well, not
until last year when the current resident, a woman named Kylie
Harrington, moved into the old mansion and decided to turn it
into a bed and breakfast. The endeavor had been plagued by accidents
and unexplained occurrences. Publicly, Kylie denied allegations
that the house was haunted. Privately, she’d called for help.
At first glance, Harrington House didn’t appear menacing or
haunted. By contrast, it also didn’t resemble the photograph in
the newspaper article. The new owner had put a lot of work into
restoring the house to a glory it hadn’t even had in its heyday.
Painted a soft yellow, the bright blue gingerbread trim added
a bit of splash. White eyelet curtains hung at most of the windows
and the grounds were landscaped. Large flowerbeds of pansies
decorated the front walk and huge clay pots of geraniums stood
sentry at regular intervals along a porch running the full length
of the house. The atmosphere seemed open and welcoming, but
Monica knew looks were deceiving. The owner was convinced
the house was haunted. Well, that remained to be seen.

HUMAN TRAFFICKING

Human Trafficking is a very lucrative profession. Women and children of all ages are abducted from their homes, the playground or neighborhood park, places of employment, even while shopping. But that only happens in third world countries, right?

Human Trafficking is the exploitation by force, fraud or coercion of vulnerable people for forced labor, domestic servitude or commercial sex operations.

DID YOU KNOW: In June 2003, the FBI in conjunction with the Department of Justice Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children launched the Innocence Lost National Initiative. Their combined efforts were aimed at addressing the growing problem of domestic sex trafficking of children in the United States. In the five years since its inception, the initiative has resulted in the development of 24 dedicated task forces and working groups throughout the U.S. involving federal, state and local law agencies working in tandem with U.S. Attorney's Offices.

Statistics (as of June 2008)

Children Recovered: 433

Seizures: Over $3 million

Convictions: 308

Task Forces and Working Groups: 24

Ivestigations have successfully led to the conviction of more than 300 pimps, madams, and their associates who exploit children and women through prostitution. These convictions have resulted in lengthy sentences including multiple 25-year-to-life sentences and the seizure of real property, vehicles, and monetary assets.

Clues that may help you identify a possible trafficing victim:

1) Accompanied by a controlling person or boss: not speaking on own behalf
2.) Lack of control over personal schedule, money, I.D., travel documents
3) Transported to and from work; lives and work
4) Debt owed to employer/crew leader; inability to leave job
5) Bruises, depression, fear, overly submissive

Lust Undone-Second Excerpt (Adult)

“No!”
Sophia shouted it so loud she startled herself into full wakefulness. She only hoped the walls were thick enough so Logan hadn’t heard her. Waiting to see if the phone rang or a knock sounded on the door, she finally eased back down onto the pillows.
Well, that didn’t work out too well.
No matter what she did, her body wouldn’t relax nor would her mind. When the light tap sounded at her door at twenty after twelve she was through arguing with herself, through finding excuses.
Trembling slightly with anticipation she undid the deadbolt and security lock and pulled the door open. Clint Beaudine was leaning into the frame looking like the world’s original bad boy. He was just as she’d seen him in her mind earlier, except that he was wearing a t-shirt and a sheepskin-lined jacket. His eyes were just as smoldering, his face just as strong-featured and one lock of his thick hair fell over his forehead. His mouth curved in a hungry smile.
“You gonna let me in, chere? I’m freezing my ass off out here.”
As if it was the most natural thing in the world she opened the door wide and stepped aside to let him cross the threshold. He bolted the door, only half turning to do it so he could keep his gaze locked with hers. Sophia backed up two steps, three, and bumped into one of the chairs at the round dinette table. Clint discarded his jacket, still advancing toward her. Then, before she could get a word out, he had his arms around her, his mouth hot and hungry on hers.
His tongue was like a flame in her mouth, scorching her every place it touched, sweeping, gliding, tasting. Her head swam and her bones turned to liquid as he drank and drank and drank from her. His body against her was just as hard as it looked, all steel muscle. And hardest of all was the thick ridge of his cock pressing against her through the worn denim of his jeans, like a brand burning through the layers of cloth.
Her fingers threaded through the heavy silk of his hair, holding his head to hers. She forgot to breathe, forgot anything except this man and the fusion of their mouths. When he finally lifted his mouth a fraction she could see the amber in his eyes gleaming like tiny dancing flames. His licked the outline of her lips then trailed kisses along the line of her jaw and down the column of her neck.
“I’m going to fuck you, chere.”
It wasn’t the lust in his voice that shocked as much as his use of the exact words she’d heard in her almost-dream. Desire skated along her spine and burst into the throbbing walls of her pussy. She wasn’t sure how much longer she could remain upright even within the iron circle of his arms.
Finally he loosened his grip and took a step back.
“We have too many clothes on.”
He turned her around, sat her on the edge of the bed and pressed the switch on the bedside lamp. With the amber glow smoothing over his body he stripped efficiently out of his jeans and t-shirt. No underwear. She should have known he’d go commando. His body as just as magnificent as in her dream only now she could see it all—the sculpted muscles, the same dusting of dark hair on his legs, the lean hips and broad shoulders. And his cock, so utterly magnificent, rising from a very thick nest of curls, the head dark and flared, his sac lying heavy against his thighs.
“Like what you see, chere?” There was no mistaking the slight arrogance in his voice. Clint Beaudine knew what he had to offer a woman. No doubt about it.
Sophia had never in her life desired a man so much, felt such powerful chemistry with another human being. Without thinking she stretched out her arm to reach for his erection. He stepped closer to her and her hand closed around the wide shaft, the skin like soft velvet over the core of steel. Hard didn’t begin to describe its condition.
She rubbed her thumb over the head, spreading the small bead of liquid seeping from the slit. Then stroked up and down, just once, before his fingers clamped around her wrist.
“Later. Right now I have to be inside you.” He bent lower to her. “But trust me, we’ll have time for whatever we want.”

More from Dragon & Hawk:

Reyna has overheard Evan talking about her with his brothers in rather heated terms...

Reyna blinked, shocked. She’d heard too much. A part of her understood that the black mood was talking, this was his worst. Must be close to the end. But—such ugliness—did he truly think…?
His words impaled her heart as surely as his legendary prince’s sword. Silent, she walked down the stairs, out the door, and toward the stables, totally numb. No one heard her.
A coyote chewed a tasty morsel of garbage in the alley down the street. She stopped and stared at him as he lifted his head, ears cocked, to stare at her.
She knew Coyote as The Jokester. He alone, of all the animals of Creation, laughed at Man. Sly and cunning, always out to fool someone. Sometimes he was a fool himself, a target of smarter creatures. Sometimes he was a messenger, sent to teach hard lessons.
The one eating garbage in Bisbee in the heat of an August morning lifted his snout to the sky and yowled, yipping in short staccato barks that sounded like a lunatic’s laugh. He looked directly at Reyna and lifted his leg on the dirt. He turned his back on her, lifted his tail high and loped off down the alley to disappear. She stood, stunned. A coyote in broad daylight was a bad enough sign, but one that laughed at her, urinated, and lifted his tail, too? That was a spiritual slap across her face.
Fool. She’d deceived herself. Thought she could handle drying out an addict and stay unaffected. Only trying to help, trying to keep a young man from dying a miserable death. She was fine all alone, didn’t need his friendship.
No. She’d lied to herself.
She’d fallen in love with Evan.

~*~

“Ma’am, you cain’t take this stallion,” the stable boy said. “He ain’t been ridden in months. He’s gone wild.”
Señor Evan Jones wishes to ride his horse. If you saddle the sorrel gelding for me, I will handle the stallion.”
The boy shook his head, but did as he was told. He led the stallion toward her, alternately dragged and lifted by the prancing, lively horse.
Reyna walked up to the animal, took the lead and laid one hand along his neck. She spoke in soothing, soft tones. Con cuidado, despacio, easy. Calm now. Your owner—su amigo—was ill for a long time. He is weak, be careful with him. ¿Mucho cuidado con él, sí? Por favor.”
The stallion quieted, allowed her to saddle him, and nudged her shoulder gently as she moved away. She patted his muzzle affectionately. The livery boy scratched his head in astonishment. Reyna gathered the stallion’s reins in her hand, swung up into the saddle, and headed out.
Evan was sullen and morose when he answered her knock. “Well, if it isn’t Señora Torture. And what fun, pray tell, do you have in store for me today? The rack? A whipping, perhaps? Or boiling in oil?”
He didn’t see the pain in her eyes. She stood shadowed in the hallway, acutely aware of her manly attire. “I thought, perhaps, you’d care to go riding. If you feel up to it, of course.”
His eyes brightened and he almost smiled. “That’s quite the surprise. I’ll get my hat.”
She rode quietly, regal and reserved while he brooded in the saddle. It wasn’t dangerously hot for the horses this early. They headed toward the Mule Mountains. When they reached open ground, she reined in the gelding and watched Evan gallop away, race into the hills, lost in the freedom of near flight.
~*~
Evan turned and looked back. Look at her sitting there. She’s sad today, as if she’s lost something dear. But then his head throbbed, blackness descended. Heat rose from the sun-baked rocks and he turned the roan stallion around. “I’m tired,” he said when they neared her. “Let’s go.”
~*~
She turned back without a word. They rode to the stables in silence, walked back to the boardinghouse silently, slowly in the growing heat that suffocated the August days. While together at a glance, the distance between them was wider than they’d ever walked before. Her hair disheveled, that one strand that always came out from her braid along her left ear stuck to the sweat along her jaw. Dust adhered to her skin in a fine muddy film. Thirsty, sweat trickled down her back, but pride silenced her discomfort.
He stepped up onto the front porch, looked down at her with an eyebrow raised, nearly sneering. “You oughta fix your hair, it’s a mess. I suppose you want a lemonade?”
“No,” she replied quietly, “thank you for asking.” Absently tucked the errant strand behind her ear. “You realize you’ll be sore tomorrow from this ride? You’ve used muscles you haven’t for quite some time.” Another reason for him to resent her.
“So? I’m always in pain after being with you,” he said dully. “Isn’t that what you enjoy, what you want?” He paused. “We’ll ride again tomorrow?”
She replied quietly. “You can ride whenever you wish.”
“Nothing to drink, then?”
“No, thank you kindly.”
“Are you coming up?”
“No,” she said. “I have other business today.”
“Suit yourself.” He turned his back on her, went into the house and let the screen door slam shut behind him.
Reyna swallowed and slowly took a deep breath. “Goodbye, Evan,” she whispered.
