Fate, Lust, and Complications...

Never alone

Alone time. If you're married with children you relish those precious moments when you can actually hear yourself think. If you're single, you yearn for the company of family and friends. Later today, I'll post a funny story about how I tripped all over myself in this quest for love, but right now I want to talk about our need for connection.

We all fear being alone to a certain extent. Human beings are social creatures - we ache to be heard, to know we mean something to someone, and to have someone special who means the world to us.

This is love. This is what keeps memories alive long after loved ones are gone. It gives us the strength to open our hearts and minds to others. When we enter a new relationship, or rekindle an old one, most of us are afraid of being hurt, but I think we fear ending up alone even more. We are human. We crave love, we yearn for romance, and we reach for that connection time and time again. That's life; and living a full life is always worth the risk.

This is the central theme in my debut novel, Paramour.

Two men: one living, one dead, and both vying for her love.

Camellia Stafford has never been alone in her room. For twenty years, she’s been engaged in a fierce power struggle with her bedroom’s previous tenant, Frank DeLuca, the ghost trapped in the light fixture above her bed.

Caustic and cranky, Frank has one soft spot—Cam. Over the years, their feelings for one another have evolved from grudging friendship to an enduring love that burns white-hot until Frank puts his feelings for Cam on ice.

When she suffers the loss of her beloved father, Cam returns home to say good-bye, and confront her feelings for Frank. She finds an unexpected shoulder to lean on in neighbor, Bradley Mitchum. Cam falls hard and fast for the handsome ad man’s charming smile and passionate nature, but Brad’s easy-going exterior masks a steely backbone tempered by adversity.

Now Cam must choose— Is her heart strong enough to determine which dream could lead to a love that will last a lifetime?

Excerpt:
Heedless of her stained jeans, Cam fell face-first onto the narrow single bed. She wrapped her arms around a pillow stuffed into a faded rose-printed cotton sham. Inhaling deeply, she picked up the scent of Cheer detergent and searched for a hint of Love’s Baby Soft that used to linger in the room.

A tinge of something different tickled her nostrils. The heady, familiar aroma made the tiny hairs on the back of her neck stand at attention. The tantalizing fragrance wasn’t a trace of her father’s traditional splash of Old Spice. She raised her head, and her nostrils twitched as she tried to pick up the thread once more, but it was gone, drifting away like a memory.

Cam groaned her frustration and flipped onto her back to stare at the popcorn ceiling. She cataloged the familiar peaks and valleys while she ran through the list of things she’d need to accomplish in the next few days.

The silence hummed around her. Her stomach growled as if to chastise her for the casserole wasted on the kitchen floor. She rubbed the edge of her thumbnail over the pad of her index finger. When fidgeting didn’t prove effective, Cam pressed her hand over her heart and carefully measured the strength of each beat against her fingertips.

She told herself everything would be okay. Here in her room, she was safe. Her eyelashes fluttered with the herculean effort it took to open them.

Cam reached up and twisted the tiny stem on the cone-shaped reading lamp above her bed. A beam of light swept the length of the bed, bathing the faded comforter in a warm, golden glow. Cam basked in the soothing pool of light, safe in her girlhood room. She studied the rosebud-patterned wallpaper and silently thanked her mother for being too bohemian to collect Madam Alexander dolls. The silence throbbed like an ache. She closed her eyes and wished she could hear her father’s tuneless humming just one more time.

She didn’t stir when the edge of her bed dipped. Instead she held her breath for a moment before opening her eyes. Francis John DeLuca sat perched on the edge of the mattress.

She stared at him, drinking in the little details. She knew the leather bracelet he wore had sixteen rows of studs. The ends of the strip of coarse black hair he wore in a Mohawk curled ever so slightly. A tiny gold hoop in his ear gleamed in the light and a Metallica shirt stretched taut across his shoulders. The sleeves cut into his biceps, but the fabric made no indention in his smooth olive skin.

The scent was back, flooding her senses with the relief of homecoming. She wondered if he knew how many hours she’d spent at the men’s cologne counter sniffing samples, trying to place the fragrance. After twenty years of friendship, endless fights, and one unforgettable kiss, she’d wondered if she finally earned the right to ask questions.

“Are you really here?” she whispered, afraid she’d scare him away.

“Yeah.”

Their eyes met, and she tumbled into the depths of his dark gaze. Cam knew if she didn’t take the chance this time, she may never have another.

“What cologne do you wear?”

Frank’s eyes narrowed with typical caution. “Polo.”

“Huh. Smells different on you.”

His thick eyebrows rose, and a sardonic smile twitched his lips. “Might be because I’m dead.”

Cam swallowed hard and sat up. “I’m glad you’re here.”

“Welcome home. I’m sorry.”

She shook her head, forcing a small, flirtatious smile. “Did you miss me?”

“Every damn day.”

“Then don’t leave me again.”

Frank raised his hand. His fingers twitched. She could feel heat radiating from his palm. Those warm fingers curved along the contour of her cheek. “I’ll make sure you’re never alone.”

Cam smiled, smoothing her palm over the rough hairs on the back of his hand. “With you around, how could I be?”

She stretched out once again and closed her eyes, certain he’d stay perched on the edge of her bed watching over her as she slept. Cam drifted off, secure in the knowledge that she would never truly be alone in her room.

A Fiery First Kiss

The first kiss between characters changes everything. Once done it can’t be undone no matter the reasons for the kiss.

For Matai, the hero in How To Breathe Fire, it is easier to try and scare Camea than tell her the truth. Luckily for him Camea doesn’t scare easy and she knows Matai isn’t everything he appears to be …

His gaze skimmed the statues pushing out of the walls. “Why don’t you believe I am the god?”

Camea ran her tongue over the backs of her teeth. She didn’t want to insult him again, and yet he seemed to be looking for honesty. She tilted her head. “A god isn’t petty. A god wouldn’t demand the deaths of so many women… Are you a demon? Did you trick the King of Adar into giving you women so you could amuse yourself?”

The witches had warned of the temptations of demons, honourless thieves who would take a woman if she strayed too far from safety. She’d thought them myths to keep women from wanting more than a husband to obey.

The man of fire crossed the floor and gripped her arms, his touch scorching, imprinting on her flesh. The flames in his eyes burned white hot. “Do not assume to know what I am. What I do or why. You know nothing of demons or gods.”

Camea met his burning stare. “Then tell me.”

His mouth closed over hers, combusting the air in her lungs. Every part of her body glowed with the heat. She hadn’t expected her first kiss to be like plunging her hand into boiling water.
He pulled back as if he were wounded and burned by her touch. His hands fell to his sides. “You may not like what you hear.”

“That doesn’t change the truth.”

Falling In Love With A Book Cover???!!!

I am actually a publisher as well as an author, although the writing came first. Being a bit impatient and not being great at rejection, I opted to self-publish my first books. During that journey, I was approached by other authors with the same dreams of getting their works into the hands of readers thus TreasureLine Publishing was born. Although we are pretty much at capacity between new books coming from our current authors as well as a handful of up and coming authors, I was fortunate enough to have had people helping me along the way and am always happy to pass on my knowledge on the art of self-publishing.

When I decided to release “Arms of an Angel” I got a good dose of what the process feels like from the author’s seat (remember, I self-published my others so I called all the shots). I had to go through editing, rewrites, beta-readers, more rewrites… There’s a point there where an author does not want to see their own words anymore!

During that time, we were working on a cover as well. We have a fantastic cover creator (Jaimey Grant – Regency Romance Author and cover designer). When she returned the mock up cover, I was immediately in love! I drove my FaceBook family nuts with constant reminders of how much I loved that cover!!! I just wanted to sit and stare at it…and yet, there was more work to be done. The book had to be formatted for print and ebook and those had to be checked over…all things that take time! In the end, I still love my cover and the book is receiving great reviews from readers making me glad I decided to take the plunge and slide back into the author’s seat.

I Write Because...

My motto for writing is to encourage, enlighten and entertain. With that, I thought I'd share a piece I wrote in hopes of encouraging someone along the way.

...And Still I Write In The Face of Rejections

Writing has always been a source of comfort for me. I can remember when I was in high school how much pleasure I got from my journalism class, writing and sharing words with my like-minded peers. But for many years after graduating from high school, I didn’t writing anything. It wasn’t until after the untimely death of my mother and son in 1994 that my husband suggested I start writing. I’d previously told him how much I loved to write in school.
He suggested that I use writing as a way to express my feelings about what I was going through. He got the idea after our grief counselor had us write goodbye letters to our departed loved ones in one of the group sessions. Thus the beginning of my writing life began.
I’m happy to say I’ve been writing continuously since 1994. I've written several short stories, as well as a non-fiction book about loss and the grief process, a collection of poems, articles and essays, in addition to completing my first work of fiction, Sacrifices In The Name of Love.
With all of the joy and comfort writing has brought to me, the most frustrating part thus far was getting published by a traditional publisher. I've entered many short story contests, placing as a runner up in one. I've written personal letters, essays, and several poems that have been accepted for publication in anthologies.
I've created a web site displaying some of my work. I've submitted essays and poems to online sites that do not offer any compensation, just to get my work seen by others. I’ve joined many online writers groups to help get my name out there and to introduce my work.
In reference to my non-fiction book, I have so many, “Thanks, but no thanks,” form rejection letters from agents and publishers that are suppose to specialize in the type of book I’ve written. It is really hard not to lose focus on my purpose of writing, and that is to entertain, encourage and/or educate others with my writing.
For the many rejection letters that come through, I remind myself that each one in only one person's opinion. I will continue to send out query letters. I haven’t been deterred in my mission, especially when the letters appear to be standard form rejection letters and are of poor quality, or the agents or publishers don’t bother to compose a letter of their own. They just unprofessionally, scribble, “No, thanks,” across my original query letter.
“It's their loss,” I conclude as it’s evident that the agents and publishers who respond with form rejection letters aren’t worthy of my written words if they don’t know how to be the professionals they claim to be.
It’s ironic, I think. “What would agents and publishers do without writers?” They disregard worthy manuscripts like yesterdays old newspapers. I would love to be the fly on the wall of many agents and publishers who discarded the works of E. Lynn Harris, Karen Q. Miller, and many other notable authors who chose to self-publish after being rejected by large publishing house.
This poor treatment of the now best-selling authors by agents and publishers remind me of the scene in the Temptations movie, when one of the original members of the R & B Singing group who quit and then bangs his fist on the bar as he watches the group perform their first hit song, “My Girl,” for the first time on the Ed Sullivan show. Well we all know that to this day, the Temptations legacy still lives on some 50 years later. As the saying goes, “…And the rest is history.”
I wonder how many desktops have been banged in this manner, as many of the authors that were rejected now sit atop Best-Sellers lists time and again.
I don't let Nay-Sayers deter me in my quest to fulfill a lifelong dream of writing and becoming a published author as I continue to write in spite of the many rejections I've received.
I tell myself that if no one else ever gets to see my written words, then so be it. I started writing as a way of helping me to deal with a very traumatic time in my life. By writing, I have accomplished that and so much more and as such, I feel I’ve already reached my number one fan, me. And I will continue plucking away at my computer keyboard, sending out query letters, all the while increasing my writing portfolio until I reach you, my other number one fan.
In 2009, my perseverance paid off. My first work of fiction, Sacrifices In The Name of Love was accepted for publication by Red Rose Publishers, and was released in Ebook form on June 3, 2010.
So always remember, perseverance and persistence is vital if you want to fulfill your dreams of becoming a published author. Learning to not let rejection letters deter you is vital, if that’s your goal. But first of all, YOU have got to believe in yourself and your writing abilities.

The First Time ~Sensual Excerpt, Deena Remiel

The first time we make love, with the one we have fallen in love with, is a magical, wondrous experience. So, too, for Emma and Michael. But it can also be nerve-wracking as well...

Excerpt from Trinity, A Brethren Novel

©Deena Remiel, 2010. Coming soon from Decadent Publishing

“So, can I get you a cup of coffee or something?” Emma finally asked, her voice near breathless from the deafening silence that had grown between them.

“Or something,” Michael replied, as he gathered her up in an embrace that took the rest of her breath away. His eyes hypnotized as he gazed determinedly into hers. And then, he kissed her. Oh so gently at first, nibbling at her bottom lip, masterfully parting her lips so he could enter and taste her. Then he slowly raised the temperature to blistering.

At first, her arms hung limply at her sides. But as the kiss deepened, she found her footing again, and her hands slid seductively up his arms, caressing and gripping Michael’s back and shoulders. She couldn’t seem to get enough of him as she fought with his tucked-in shirt. But then, she won the battle and could feel his smooth skin and his taut muscles clenching with every touch of her hands. She didn’t feel him lift her off the floor, never once breaking their kiss. Surprised, she found herself planted on the countertop.

“Oh God, Emma, do you know what you’ve been doing to me?” he growled. “Driving me crazy, woman. That’s what.” His lips left a feverish trail of burning kisses from her jaw line down her neck. “I need more of you, Emma. So much more.”

Emma took his face into her hands and looked at him with eyes blurred by desire. She threw all caution to the wind. “My bedroom, Michael, take me there, now.” She could barely speak anymore, she could barely think. He lifted her up in his arms, never taking his eyes off hers, and made his way to her bedroom.

He closed the door with his foot, and proceeded to lay her on the bed. Her hair splayed out like black satin on the pillow. Michael stood motionless.

A First from Juniper Bell's GO WILD

Happy Valentine's Day to everyone here at the Party Pavilion! Hmm, first kisses...I love first kisses, but first meetings are great too. My new Ellora's Cave release GO WILD doesn't show Lars and Katia's first kiss, but they have a really fun first encounter. They meet at a random laundromat in the middle of Minnesota. He's an athlete on the biathlon circuit, she's on a crosscountry road trip. I hope you enjoy this little snippet!

Katia had watched Lars for what felt like hours. At another time in her life, she would have approached him and struck up a conversation that would have inevitably led to the nearest No-Tell Motel. But for once in her life, she was trying to be celibate. So she’d merely watched him the way a cat watches a mouse she’s too lazy to chase. He moved smoothly and gracefully for such a big man. As far as she could tell, he had no extra body fat. To her expert eye, he had to be an athlete. Too tall for soccer. Not quite lean enough for a swimmer. Too lean for a football player.

She was mulling over various possible sports, bouncing one foot on the other, so preoccupied she didn’t notice that he’d moved to stand directly in front of her. Without warning, she found herself staring at the bulge in his jeans, which looked just as impressive as the rest of him. She lifted her eyes up the long stretch of his chest to his face. Intelligent blue-gray eyes gave her a level, assessing look. A broken nose provided the only flaw in his rough-hewn face. Judging by the lines around his eyes, he spent a lot of time in the sun.

Diving? Ice hockey?

She ruled out hockey when he finally opened his mouth and revealed a complete set of even, white teeth. And then she forgot every sport in creation at his next words.

“Will it bother you if I take off my clothes?”

“Excuse me?” Had she somehow expressed her appreciation of his body out loud? She looked around the deserted laundromat. Where had everyone gone? When she’d come in, it had been busy enough. Now it was just her and this Viking god who apparently wanted to strip.

“I’m low on clothes. Traveling too much. If I wash these, I won’t have to do laundry again so soon. I promise I’ll keep my underwear on. I can wash those in the sink.”

“Oh, don’t worry about that on my account. I mean, you can take it all off if you want. I’m cool. Really. I’ve seen naked men before.”

He chuckled, which made his face look about ten years younger. How old is he? Who cares? She smiled saucily.

“I don’t want to break any laws. It’s late enough, I don’t think anyone else will come in. But I wanted to make sure I wouldn’t offend you.”

“Oh. No. Not at all. Go for it.” A committed aficionado of the male form, she settled back to enjoy herself. Who knew that doing laundry in Minnesota would be so rewarding? Her eyes wandered down to the button fly of his jeans. Would he wear boxers or briefs? Would he have blond hair on his chest, or any freckles to speak of? Just how muscular would that spectacular body be? Her mouth watered. She shifted in her chair.

After a moment, she realized he wasn’t taking off a stitch of clothing. “Well?”

“I was kidding,” he said.

Mortified, she felt blood rush to her face. “Oh. Because I was staring.”

“A little.”

“I was just playing a game. Guess the sport.”

One eyebrow quirked in a way she would become familiar with before long. “If you mean my sport, I’ll bet you dinner that you’ll never guess.”

Dinner. It was already almost ten at night. Well, if it was too late for dinner, she could always eat him up.

“Deal.” Scolding herself for her naughty thoughts, which, come to think of it, were probably the natural consequence of her celibate state, she set herself to naming every sport she could think of.

“Wrestling.”

“No.” He lowered himself into the chair next to her. Her pulse skipped to double time.

“Synchronized swimming.” He scowled.

“Fine, more testosterone. Racecar driving.”

“My sport burns no hydrocarbons.”

An athlete with a vocabulary. He got sexier every second.

“Skiing.”

“Getting warmer.”

Yes, it was. The laundromat seemed to have become an overheated locker room while she wasn’t looking. “That weird thing where the skiers jump off a giant diving board a thousand feet up in the air.”

“Ski jumping. Getting hotter.”

But try as she might, she never managed to guess biathlon, since she’d never heard of it. He explained it to her, using a mop as a stand-in for a rifle. She’d never forget the sight of him whirling and kneeling, sighting down the mop handle at the doorknob of the laundromat.

Was that when she’d fallen in love with him?
