Do you have The Goddess Connection?

Every woman should embrace her inner goddess! That’s the premise of The Goddess Connection series, and The Magic of Lavender, a full-length paranormal romance, kicks off the series.

I have several more novels in this series in mind to follow. In each, the heroine will be somehow connected to a goddess. Her lifelong quirks will become strengths once she finds her true place in the world, and accepts herself for who she really is.

In The Magic of Lavender, Joss is related to the goddess Iris. Many figures from Greek mythology appear in this story. I'm a research nut, and love to incorporate cool myths and legends.

Why select an obscure goddess like Iris? As it turns out, she’s actually the perfect one to begin this series. As the Goddess of the Rainbow, Iris connects the gods to humans, and the otherworld to this world. She’s also called the Messenger of the Gods, and can travel at the speed of wind anywhere in the world, or beyond. So my subconscious must have been working overtime – sometimes it knows best!

Iris also has some cool goddess connections herself – her mother’s Electra, the ocean nymph, and her father is the Titan named Thaumaus, whose mother is Gaia, or mother Earth. This is an important link to the story line, because the heroine buys an old bed and breakfast which happens to sit atop ley lines, which convey powerful energy.

In ancient times, some believed ley lines held spiritual power. Many people today still seek out the positive energies from ley lines such as those in Sedona, Arizona, or the Great Pyramid at Giza, Nazca in Peru, or Stonehenge.

So you can see why it might cause a conflict with the Underworld if the relation of a goddess moved to such a spot. Poor Joss has no idea what she’s gotten herself into! All she wants is to fill in the void left when her husband died, and grow lavender to flavor special dishes at the inn.

Joss also doesn’t realize that planting lavender will draw the fae. Lavender also has many interesting legends. Throughout history, lavender has been used to protect against evil, to heal (doctors used it during World War I to disinfect walls and floors), and to help calm and soothe people’s troubled minds. In Ireland, brides used to braid lavender in their hair to retain their sacred power, and used it as an aphrodisiac. So if you need a little boost to your love life, or in your own sacred power, plant some lavender. *grins*

And, like at the fictional Lavender Hill Inn, people cook with lavender. Here’s a taste of one of Joss’s offerings at the inn:

Lavender Lemonade
Ingredients
3 cups sugar
7 sprigs lavender (stems and buds), plus additional for garnish*
2 cups fresh lemon juice (from about 12 lemons)
1/2 cup fresh lime juice (from about 5 limes)
Directions:
In a large saucepan, bring one gallon of water and the sugar to a boil. Remove from heat; add 7 lavender sprigs and lemon and lime juices. Cool to room temperature, strain, and chill. Serve on ice, with additional lavender for garnish.
* If unavailable, substitute fresh basil or lemon thyme.

Blurb:
Jocelyn Gibson forgot about the realm of magic. But it never forgot her. Gram always told her: don’t ignore your magical gifts, it will insult the family. But Joss didn’t realize her gifts included channeling the energy of powerful ley lines. Or that her family included a goddess. Family connections come in handy when the Lord of the Underworld kidnaps local vet Eric Hendricks. He’s an amazing lover, but Joss didn’t know she loved him until too late. With a little help from the Goddess Iris, Joss defends the new life she’s forged, and helps save the town of Boiling Springs from destruction. Once Eric escapes Hell, can she stop loving him to keep him safe?

Release Party: First Excerpt from Blindfold Me by Avril Ashton

Thirteen years ago, Lyric Benson's boyfriend accused her of sleeping with his older brother then disappeared. She never stopped caring, never stopped hoping. Now, all these years later, Lyric is stunned to discover the new owner of her company is one Grayson St. Clair, who never forgot or forgave her transgression.

Grayson wants nothing to do with someone he thinks hurt him so deeply. He can't let go of the past and he can't trust Lyric. It doesn't help matters that while on her watch, the Masonry company she oversaw was hacked into and the company's top secret client list accessed. Reluctantly, Lyric and Grayson team up to find the culprit, with Grayson denying their blossoming feelings at every turn. But when his brother appears, secrets in tow, Grayson will have to choose: live in the past or move on with Lyric.

They faced each other as if on a battlefield, even though they weren’t more than a couple feet apart.
“Explain yourself.” Grayson raked his gaze over her.
“I already have.” She scowled.
“No, you haven’t. You haven’t explained why you allowed me to walk into this situation completely blindfolded.”
“Aren’t you being a bit overdramatic?” she asked.
Is she for real? He stared at her. “Someone hacked the company’s system, accessed our exclusive client list, and is using said list to seduce our clients over to their side.” He breathed. “And the person who should’ve been protecting my company thinks I’m being overdramatic. Am I right?”
“Look, Gray, I’m really sorry.” She touched his arm. Grayson flinched away and she dropped her hand. “I’m sorry, but we can fix it.”
He brushed a hand over his face and paced. “Yeah? How do you propose we do this?”
She took a seat on the conference table and tucked a strand of hair behind her right ear. A move so familiar, memories threatened to overwhelm him. Another time, another place. He shook his head in an attempt to clear it and focused on what she had to say.
“The culprit has to be one of Ilsha’s competitors. There are only three in the New York area who specialize in the same type of products we do. I say we investigate to see which one is the guilty party.”
He stared at her, at the familiar curve of her neck and inviting glow of her skin.
“Did you hear what I said?” she asked.
He blinked. “Yeah, something about looking at the competitors.”
She nodded.
“All right, I’ll have Richard look into it.”
“Why him?” She wrinkled her brow. “I was hoping we could do it.”
“We who?”
“Me and you–us,” she said. “I’m the manager and this happened on my watch.”
“You’re right, of course.” He shifted to the front of her, a move calculated to force her to look up at him. “I can’t fire you because of the sales agreement, so you’ll have to fix this mess,” he said coolly.
“What?” Surprise pitched her voice higher. “What does the sales agreement say?”
“Do you want to leave? Because you can, nothing’s stopping you.” He granted her a mocking smile.
“Like I’d give you the satisfaction. I’m staying put, so answer the question. What did you mean?”
Grayson sighed. “There’s a clause in the sales agreement by the previous owner. He wants me to keep on the current staff for at least six months. Anyone can leave if they want, but I can’t fire anybody.”
Lyric pursed her lips. “If you had your way, I’d be long gone. Wouldn’t I?” She spoke the words quietly, head tilted to look up at him.
“Well, yes. Especially since you practically gave our clients away.”
“Bastard,” she spat. “This has nothing to do with Ilsha.” Her fists clenched in her lap.
Grayson kept his face blank and met her gaze head-on.
“You still hate me.” Her chest heaved. “You still hate me after all these years.”
“What do you expect, Lyric?” Thirteen years of pain and anguish clung to every word he spoke. “You slept with my brother!”

Hunter and the Hawk by Gale Stanley

Here's an excerpt from my April 30th release, Hunter and the Hawk, a MM shape-shifter romance.
HUNTER AND THE HAWK
SYMBIOTIC MATES: 1
Blurb:
When Aidan walks into the Wolf Den and asks to see the Alpha, he doesn’t get a warm welcome. He’s barely through the door before he’s attacked. The Vampire’s arm is broken and he fears his totem animal, a Hawk, will never fly again.
Hunter, a Lycan Enforcer, comes to his aid and takes him aside for questioning. Aidan claims to have information about the murder of Hunter’s mate and he’ll trade for Lycan blood. At first, Hunter thinks it's a trap, but Aidan convinces him that the answer to both species survival may lie in their blood. Hunter agrees to secretly help Aidan in exchange for the killer’s name. But he gets more than he bargained for when he finds himself falling for the seductive vampire. When the research goes awry, he’s sure he’s been used by the scheming bloodsuckers. But is Aidan the real enemy or is it someone closer to home?
Available at Silver Publishing:

Excerpt

Hunter centered his chin over the cue stick and concentrated on his aim. The game- winning ball sat just in front of his face, waiting to be dropped into the pocket. He studied it, imagining where the cue ball would need to hit in order to make his shot. Stick level, he took a few warm-up strokes.
Perfect. This wager is as good as won—
"Dogfight!"
Fuck! A perfectly aimed shot gone to hell.
Disgusted, he threw down his cue stick and made his way toward the bar where two men were arguing over a spilled beer. As he got closer the hackles rose on the back of his neck. Only midnight and a fight brewing already?
One of the two wolves spotted him approaching and nudged the other. They both stood and moved off toward the exit, taking their argument outside.
Good enough. Why ruin the night by turning a simple beef into a real brawl? If the men were smart enough to settle things between themselves, Hunter wouldn't get involved.
The Wolf Den always drew a rough crowd on Saturday night. Rafe, the pack Alpha, encouraged the males to visit the bar, enticing them with drugs and alcohol.
A lone wolf is a frustrated wolf and frustrated wolves cause trouble.
Hunter wished he had a nickel for every time he heard Rafe utter those words. He'd be a rich man. He didn't always agree with their pack leader but he gave him the respect he deserved, and kept his mouth shut.
Their Alpha believed every wolf needed a mate. And if he didn't have a mate, then he needed a fuck buddy. With so few women available, the club had become a place where unmated Lycans could find a sex partner. Relationships had been forged in the Den, but for the most part the club remained a haven for one-night stands.
The shifters, full of randy animal spirits, behaved as well as could be expected. Dogs fight. It's the nature of the beast. Anything could trigger it — a bump in passing, jealousy over one man's attention to another, or jockeying for dominance in the pack.
Prevention was always the best policy. Two or three pack enforcers, strategically stationed around the bar, usually managed to maintain a testosterone-friendly atmosphere, their mere presence a reminder that the Lycans were being scrutinized.
But tonight the air seemed super-charged with tension. Utilizing extra enforcers had been a good call.
Hunter took one of the vacated seats at the bar and the bartender slid a bottle of mineral water in front of him. Tyler winked as he leaned over and rested his elbows on the bar. He smiled at Hunter seductively. "What are you doing later, sweetheart?"
Heat traveled up his spine. Maybe he was crazy to turn down a sexy wolf like Tyler. He knew the bartender didn't have a regular partner, preferring serial flings to monogamy. Relieving his sexual frustration with a man like Tyler wouldn't be a hardship. Coward. Are you going to hide behind your grief forever?
When he was just a pup, a few inexperienced encounters had convinced him he preferred males. Then Rafe had paired him with a female mate and he'd put those urges to bed. He could have taken lovers on the side, but he'd chosen to remain faithful. He hadn't been with a man in twenty years. Hell, he wouldn't know what to do with him. Tyler would laugh him out of bed. He reached for the bottle. "I'm on overtime."
The bartender sighed regretfully. "You know what they say about all work and no play."
"No. What do they say?"
"That it sucks." Tyler took his hand and turned it over. "You're starting to grow hair on your palms." He rubbed a thumb over Hunter's palm.
Hunter pulled his hand away and looked at it. It wouldn't surprise him.
Tyler broke up laughing. "If you change your mind, you know where to find me."
Tyler's trim ass held his attention as he walked away. Shit! Hunter washed a few aspirin down with a healthy swallow of water and held the cold bottle against his head. His temples throbbed along with the hot, pulsing beat of the electronic dance music. Colored lights around the dance floor winked in the mirror over the bar, intensifying the pain in his head. He'd rather be on patrol outside any day of the week.

Happy Reading, Gale Stanley

My upcoming book, hopefully to be released in July, is Moon of Hard Winter, the 3rd book in The Lakota Moon Series. A slight departure from the other books in this series, Moon of Hard Winter is a time travel. The story line develops around  the Wounded Knee Massacre in 1890.
John Six Feathers believes the truth of what happened at Wounded Knee one-hundred and ten years ago has not been told. He wants to see the medals of honor given to soldier's who participated in the slaughter of women and children removed.
Faith Donahey believes the truth is more than just an overall picture, and her great-great grandfather deserves the medal of honor he received, despite what the Lakota say.   A horrible accident on the highway, a spiritual intervention, and the truth as they knew it becomes the truth as they will tell their children and their  grandchildren down through time.  This is a chronicle of their times and the events thereof.
While this is a love story, it is also a cautionary tale of people and how they learn from one another and grow to understand their similarities as well as their differences. Cultural barriers are breached as the vast wilderness swallows them in a tale of something so tainted and vilifying they must band together or be destroyed by the fear and hatred of one people and the unquiet desperation of another.
I loved writing this tale and found the research both riveting and heartbreaking.
Riveting in the respect of wanting to know more, to learn what, why and how one people can be so arrogant as to treat another people with such lethal disregard for their rights and their lives. Of course, there has always been greed. The deadliest of the deadly sins.
Heartbreaking for the obvious reasons. Anyone who has ever studied—even casually—the plight of the many Indian tribes in this nation must be touched by the wrongness of it. Whole clans slaughtered, their cultures and languages destroyed—and only a few remain. There have been many tales of a similar nature regarding the American Indians—Sand Creek Massacre comes to mind immediately. These and other atrocities echo stories from around the world. From Ireland to Scotland, India and many other places colonized by the British to the Mongols, Viking and Saxon invasions, the Celts, the Romans…  The list is endless, and in my quest to tell stories that depict the human condition as well as give a bit of history, I find this particular incident—Wounded Knee—a prime example of terrorist tactics.
And a most horrid blot on the honor of this country. To have actually given murdering soldiers Medals of Honor for killing women and children was—and remains—a shameful thing.
But that is another story for another day. I will regale you no further with my proverbial soap box. I only ask that you read my books with an unjaundiced eye and enjoy the story. And if, perhaps, your sense of justice is moved to cry "foul!" then I have done some good, I think.

Next in the Series will be book four, Moon of Tender Grass, unfinished but shaping up nicely. This will be another time travel and the historical subject will be The Battle at Greasy Grass Creek, better known as Little Big Horn.

An exciting tale of a family caught up in the series of events preceeding the battle, and their experiences in the aftermath--both then and now.

Moon of Tender Grass, Blue Crow's Story

Coming Soon!

My latest release in print only is Moon of Ripening, a story of love that overcomes hardship and struggle, as well as racial barriers. Thunder Heart, a Lakota warrior, saves the lives of two white women during Red Cloud's war. In doing so, he endangers his people who could easily become the target of the soldiers or encounter the wrath of Red Cloud who considers all white people his enemy. Of course, in the end, love prevails, as it always does in a romance book, but it's the getting there that is the essence of the tale. I loved researching and writing this one in particular...but the next one will probably become my favorite, as each book emerges from the darkness and my sense of accomplishment grows. There will be four more books in the Lakota Moon series and I sincerely hope you enjoy them all. This book will be available on Kindle soon.
When I began research for the Lakota Moon Series I ran across a website that deals with donations for the people of Pine Ridge Reservation. Reading further, I discovered this place in the center of our country is one of the poorest places in the nation, and like a 3rd world country in some respects. It made me ashamed to be an American, for the first time in my life. I cannot imagine children who have no school supplies, people without winter coats, families who know hunger—not here in the USA.
I bookmarked the sites that pertain to this and kept up with the issues, eventually joining and contributing to their drives. Anyone who is interested in helping, may go to their site at:
While there have been innovations and changes recently that the Lakota have taken to improve their lives, such as small business development, there is a long road ahead and my hope is that others will see their efforts and be willing to assist.
The Lakota are a proud people and the only Native American Nation to withstand the onslaught of the pioneering whites. They drove the white man away, thanks to Red Cloud and Crazy Horse's leadership, and until the 'goons' in Washington broke the treaties and sent troupes in, they remained free on their lands.
My social conscience was stricken heavily by the horrible conditions these people live with and it boggles the brain to think of the money spent on foreign wars when we have so much need right here.
When you read my books—and I wish you will—you will hopefully glimpse the true people of the Nations. They are a treasure trove of wisdom and knowledge we've only begun to tap.

From the Heartland

The Cowboy Wore Tartan is the first book in a six book series. When 4 brothers and 2 half brothers meet and marry, they are steered toward their prospective mates by their Wily old grandfather, the Patriarch of the family.
This is a fun series, lighthearted and playful, with gradually increasing heat levels until the last book, The Chickasaw Wore Plaid, turns up the heat to scorching. I planned the books this way to entice the reader to step a little further into the fire with each book.
The Campbell's are coming to Texas and things will never be the same!
Archie Campbell and his business partner, Graham Macdonald conspire to increase their floundering business by using their grandchildren in an ad campaign, posing as a happily married couple. The only problem is getting the younger generation to cooperate.
Tav Macdonald isn't keen on marriage, even a pretend one. Yet his first sight of the lovely Vanessa Campbell has him rethinking his position on the matter.
Vanessa Campbell has no intention of indulging her wily old grandfather's scheme to  marry her off to a Texas Rancher. Seeing the handsome cowboy, however, gives her pause to reconsider the idea.
This book is available at Kindle as well as FictionWise and All Romance eBooks. Be sure and get your copy soon and begin the slow burn that eventually erupts into a roaring bonfire of passion.
 Excerpt:
"Last night has nothing to do with today, Tav. You’ve been promising to show me the ranch. What better way than to have me along while you do your chores?"
"Watch yourself, missy. I might put you to work."
"I’m game," came her snappy answer. "We have horses and cattle and sheep in the highlands. On a much smaller scale than this of course, but I’m no stranger to what you call wrangling. I’ve even mended a fence or two in my time."
"You? Mend fence?" Tav let a scoffing sound escape. That mistake cost him a stinging slap across the rear with a rawhide glove for his insolence. He turned and snatched the glove out of Nessa’s hand. "Lady, if you want me to turn you over my knee, right here, right now, in full sight of every man on this ranch, do that one more time."
"You sound so ferocious, Mactavish." She smiled wickedly. "Too bad I know you so well. You’d never dare—"
He didn’t know what made him do it. One minute he was holding her glove and glaring at her, the next minute he’d grabbed her around the waist and slung her over his shoulder. He headed for the barn. Nessa squirmed and squealed. He just held on firmly and slapped her shapely rear once when she wiggled so hard they almost fell in the mud.
Once in the shelter of the barn, he closed the wide double doors and turned to face her. Nessa had backed up to the far wall. There was no escape. He grinned. The woman was conveniently close to the ladder to the loft. Every frustration he’d felt for her from the moment he’d laid eyes on her, every sleepless night, and lust filled thought merged into one mindless drive. He took a step, then another, moving in on his prey.
Primeval hunger blinded him. Like a conquering clansman taking the spoils of war. She looked so defenseless, though she didn’t cower. Her eyes were trained on him—huge, startled, so blue no sky could match the shade. She held herself poised as though to run—or fight.
Tav’s blood surged, pushing him painfully against his zipper at the thought of wrestling her to the ground, tearing away the cloth that separated their flesh. Her lips parted slightly, tongue darting out to lick the corner of her mouth. God help him, he was going to ravish her.
He closed the distance, halting inches from her. One hand came up of its own volition, stroking the silky flesh of her throat. He heard a growling noise, not recognizing it as coming from his throat. Tracing the contours of her finely molded facial bones, he allowed his other hand to circle her nape, drawing her up toward his mouth.
"Stop, Tav. Please."
Her softly spoken plea barely registered as he took her lips, silencing her words. Nibbling at her lips, sucking them, pressuring them apart with his tongue, he mindlessly devoured her mouth, coming alive as she responded, stroking her tongue against his with the same frantic urgency.
He pressed her to the wall, lifting her to fit him, sliding a knee between her thighs. She closed her self around him and the damp heat of her seeped through their clothing, burning his muscled flesh as she moved against him.

Author Bio
I grew up in Southern California, but my heart has always been in the wide open plains of the Heartland. When I write, I see the images so clearly, it's as though I'm there. My stories flow from the heart, and when someone tells me the like my work, I am content. Sometimes I think I was born writing, and have been doing so since I could put pen to paper. My first efforts at short stories began when I was in the first grade, and I took a sabbatical to raise a husband and two sons, then returned to the craft I love.
I write for pleasure, mainly western historical with Native American Heroes, the occasional contemporary romance and also bit of whimsical fantasy. My heroes are always modeled after my late husband, whose Chickasaw heritage inspires me. Alpha heroes are the only kind I write, and they have to be compassionate, passionate and intelligent or they never make it to the page. My published work includes Native American Romance and I'm published in several contemporary anthologies as well.  Along with writing, I've branched out to produce book trailer videos.
