I am excited to be participating in Goddess fish's Party Pavilion! I will be sharing short excerpts from the book throughout the day.

Book Blurb:
For Emily Waters, a nature-loving, small-town girl with an overprotective father, heading off to Boston University to study conservation biology is a dream come true—until a chance encounter catapults her into a mythical world she’d do anything to escape.

The latest victim in a rash of abductions near campus, Emily is brutally attacked before being rescued by a powerful new friend. She survives the ordeal, only to find herself held captive and presented with an impossible choice.

While preparing for the unimaginable life she must now embrace clues soon emerge that Emily may not be entirely human, and her physical transformation awakens goddess-like powers that her new family cannot begin to explain.

Dealing with her human first love, the not-so-platonic relationship with her coven “sister,” and her new vampire sort-of-boyfriend further complicates matters, not to mention being secretly hunted by the psychopaths who attacked her. And as the only known offspring of a once all-powerful race, the climactic battle is only the beginning of her journey.

Prologue Teaser:
“All rise!” the bailiff bellowed out through the hall. “This court is now in session. The honorable global court inquisitor O’Callaghan presiding.”

An imposing figure with short, golden locks entered from behind the bailiff, motioning for people to take their seats. He gathered his floor-length white and purple robes in his left hand, made his way over to the furthest prisoner and yanked the hood from her head.

“So this is the all-powerful Sienna,” the inquisitor mocked, squeezing the bound woman’s cheeks with his hand. “How disappointing.”

Her once beautiful face was disfigured by several charred-black electrical burns. Blood and pus oozed out of the open wounds. The pungent salve packed into her broken nose made her eyes tear up and prevented her from smelling anything.

“Do you have anything you wish to say in your defense before I render my verdict?” the inquisitor asked, deactivating the device around her throat so she could speak.

“This will never work—she knows her life is far more important than mine.”

“It’s possible she’d let you die,” he acknowledged. “But both of her parents, her mate and her best friend? No, I think that’s far too much to expect her to endure. Sooner or later she’ll come, and the world will celebrate her execution.”

Sienna snapped to attention, her green eyes widening in horror at the news of who else had been captured. “You have no idea what you’ve done—everyone in this building’s going to die.”

The crowd erupted at her outburst, and the inquisitor held up his hand to silence them. “And how exactly is your precious queen going to manage that? She’ll be welcomed to our fair city by twenty thousand volts from the first alarm she trips. Not enough to kill your kind, but plenty to leave her unconscious until—”

“Sir, a perimeter alarm’s been triggered just outside the north gate,” a soldier interrupted from the gallery.

He wheeled on the man in a fit of anger. “Interrupt me again, and I’ll disembowel you! People have been jumping the fence all day—contact the guards at the gate and have them check it out.”

“We tried sir. Calls have been placed to the guard desk, the three closest perimeter sweep teams and the north tactical unit—they’re not responding.”

“Who’s not responding, you imbecile!”

“Any of them.”

“It’s too late,” Sienna said, gazing at his panic-stricken face. “She’s here.”

Question 1: Where was Isabella abandoned?

Email me the correct answer at guidoccioj@bell.net

GOOD LUCK!!

Excerpt

Isabella stumbled as she got out of bed and tried to balance herself on the stumps that now served as permanent legs. She willed herself not to cry as she recalled the magnificent tail that had been the envy of the Mediterranean kingdom. Her mother and grandmother had also been blessed with the same tail. Now only Annabella held this birthright.

She heard her stomach growl and thought longingly of her favorite kelp dish. She closed her eyes and visualized the steaming goodness that would satisfy her hunger. And then she remembered that she could no longer manifest her desires.

No more powers. No more comfort and ease.

Her lips trembled as she looked about the small, neat room filled with large wooden pieces and smaller metallic ones. She tried to move one of the larger pieces and then gave up in frustration. Andrew had promised her a beautiful home with servants, and now she must live this life of ordinary humans.

The flickering of a green light caught her attention. She approached and noticed the tablet lying on one of the wooden surfaces. It was blinking at her. Tentatively, she touched the green light. The blinking stopped and a smiling face materialized.

“Greetings, Isabella. I am Lisa738. Annabella has asked me to guide you through your orientation.”

Isabella frowned and tried to recall her connection to this lowly mermaid from the Numbers class.

Lisa738 explained, “Since this is your first time using a tablet, I will describe some of its features. Whenever you press the green light, I will appear on this screen. Underneath the screen are a series of buttons that you will learn how to use.” She paused. “Am I going too quickly for you?”

Isabella had a sudden flash from her youth as she recalled a small, helpless, uncoordinated mermaid who could not keep up. She also remembered the wicked laughter and cruel taunts she had hurled at Lisa738. “No, go on. I’m listening.”

“Some of the buttons are raised and shiny. If you touch them, you will notice they have a smooth finish. Their glaze has been treated with magnetic ions. Go ahead and peel off one of the coatings.”

Isabella picked up the button closest to her and slowly and deliberately peeled off its coating. She looked up expectantly at Lisa738.

“Good. Now place the button on your left temple. The ions from the button will penetrate your skin and enter your brain. It will take only a few seconds for all the information from the button to enter your consciousness. When you feel a tiny surge of energy, move on to the next button. Each button has been programmed to give you enough information to survive as Barbara Davies, your new earth identity.”

Hilarity and Hijinks: 11 Amusing Facts about SCOUNDREL FOR HIRE

http://writingnovelsthatsell.com/scoundrel-for-hire-enter-raffle-for-chances-to-win-10-prizes/

Meanwhile, in the spirit of “hilarity and hijinks,” I’m taking you behind the scenes to learn the “real” story behind the story.  (You realize, I probably shouldn’t admit ANY of these things in public . . . LOL!)  Enjoy! ~ Adrienne deWolfe

Hilarity and Hijinks:
11 Amusing Facts about
SCOUNDREL FOR HIRE
by Adrienne deWolfe

1.
The real name of the hero, Rafe Jones, is Raphael. In the Velvet Lies series, all of the Jones siblings have angel names:  Michael, Gabriel, and Seraphina.  However, all of them are lying through their teeth about something. (Except for Gabriel – who shows up as a ghost in HIS WICKED DREAM, Book 2.)

2.
After writing 3 salt-of-the-earth Texans as heroes (Wild Texas Nights series,) Rafe is my first “bad-boy” hero. However, Rafe almost didn’t see the light of day.  My Wild Texas Nights publisher (Bantam) kept rejecting Rafe’s story:  First, the “editorial committee” told me that they didn’t think any Romance reader would like a hero who’s a thief.  Then Bantam told me I need more “angst.” (This is why the prologue is a tear-jerker, while the rest of the novel is a farce.) After I re-wrote the book’s proposal for the 3rd time, my editor said (and I quote,) “There’s still something wrong with this book.  I know! Why don’t you make the hero a thief!” (At which point, I told my agent, “SHOP THIS BOOK.”)

I'll be donating a portion of my royalties from
my Velvet Lies series to urban tree-planting efforts.
3.
BTW: SCOUNDREL FOR HIRE became a #1 bestseller on Barnes and Noble, and Rafe, the rascally THIEF, won a K.I.S.S. Award from Romantic Times Magazine. (So much for prognostications by number-crunching statisticians.  Crystal ball, anyone?) I’ll be donating a portion of my royalties from all the ebooks in the Velvet Lies series to tree-planting efforts in the cities. (See press release.)

4.
From the beginning, I envisioned SCOUNDREL FOR HIRE as a comedy in which all the characters were hoodwinking each other. That’s why I chose outlandish character names for my wealthy heroine (“Silver Nichols”) and her mining-mogul of a father (“Maximillian Nichols.”)

Rascally Rafe's alter ego, "Lord Chumley," was
inspired by my all-time favorite swashbuckling
hero, the Scarlet Pimpernel (the title character
in the historical novel by Baroness d'Orczy)
5.
Octavia, Rafe’s “ward,” isn’t Human. Tavy gets into all kinds of trouble in the book ~ especially when Rafe tries to teach her how to swim in Silver’s bathtub. My favorite Tavy scene is when she crashes the oh-so-serious seance, heaping hilarity upon hijinks when her crab-puff chasing makes attendees think they’ve seen a real ghost! (What kind of beastie is Octavia?  You’ll have to read the book to find out.  Or you could play my Scavenger Hunt for 1 of 10 cool prizes.)

6.
SCOUNDREL FOR HIRE was originally planned for 550 pages. Then my literary agent, who was vacationing in Scotland, called me on the phone and said, “Uh, by the way. Did I mention that your (new publisher) will only accept 400-page manuscripts?” I was writing the “piano scene” at the time.  And that’s why that particular scene had to advance EVERY SUBPLOT in the book.

Rafe's an accomplished pianist -- but so is Silver! She
serenades him with Schubert's haunting "Standchen."
The lyrics include the line,
"Anxious, fevered I await thee,
Come and bring me joy!"

(Naughty! ;-) )
7.
Speaking of pianos, Silver had to have hers hauled over the Rocky Mountains by mule train.  (Ah, the privileges of wealth.) Rafe serenades her with Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata in Chapter 8.

8.
In SCOUNDREL FOR HIRE, Silver is afraid of spiders. Not me, baby! I think spiders are some of the coolest critters on the planet.  I once stopped Austin, Texas, traffic to protect a tarantula that was crossing the street.  (Okay: I only stopped ONE car.  And yes, the driver thought I was Looney Tunes.)  Hey, spiders need love, too!

One of my favorite scenes in Scoundrel for Hire
is the seance -- which Rafe's four-footed ward
crashes! (LOL!)
9.
It is a GROSS EXAGGERATION that I learned how to talk to dead people through a crystal ball, so I could write the seance scene in SCOUNDREL FOR HIRE. (I learned how to read Tarot Cards, silly.)

10.
Speaking of research: in order to bring you Rafe’s and Silver’s thrilling love story (which is set in Colorado,) I took a “writer’s vacation” to the Rocky Mountain State, where I suffered altitude sickness; got attacked by a mad (pet) dalmatian;  tossed out into the snow by the dalmatian’s psycho owner (snow is especially traumatic for us Texas folk;) stalked by a mugger through a grocery store parking lot; and denied the ONE cool vacation thing that I’d planned – a hot air balloon ride over Pike’s Peak – because a storm threatened for the wrong 5 minutes of my trip. (Sunny skies reigned over Colorado for the rest of the week.)  Fortunately, bestselling Romance novelist, Julia Quinn, took pity on me and invited me to stay at her Denver home so I wouldn’t have to sleep in the snow (or a Motel 6.)

11.
I LOVE that Goddess Fish Promotions “randomly” scheduled SCOUNDREL FOR HIRE’S book tour from Nov. 11 through 22. Celestia, the fortune-teller in my novel, would tell you that 11 and 22 are both “master numbers” and especially important.  Now I’m expecting to win the lottery. Or have a comet fly over my house. Or be abducted by aliens!! (Stay tuned … )

Love in the RV Park: A Romance For Men

(Rogue Phoenix Press, 2013)

An Excerpt from this very Quirky Romance which answers the ancient question--What do Women Want?

Shadows on the Sun
The RV Park Couple No One Has Met

Tennessee Williams knew distinctly
—No shadows dance upon the Sun
And now you know it, too
But the sun shines anyway...

Yes, the pair lives together in an older single wide
A two-room palace smelling like ash trays, old coffee, and ecumenical paint.
He might have looked like Elvis (the 50’s Elvis) three decades ago…
She is still a beauty, hardened some. Though her tattoos have lost that etched
and sexy look, she still turns heads... and has a poignant “way” any male or
female might recognize.

Yes, they still cut impressive figures together—but anachronistic—
Sometime, long ago, they left Public lives together
and rode a bus to Hamilton City, and thought they’d stay a day or two—walking
hand-in-hand through the diesel fumes, neither excited nor dismayed. Some time went by—
Then they waited to see if spouses were angry or perplexed—
They never heard a thing from the Old World—now, in late middle age,
Still they live and love in a rent-by-the-week mobile home,
Bathed in eerie and accusing pink light each winter morning—
Haunted by frosty windows in the dark sky December…
They wander to the Blue Caboose Diner for most meals
Coupling down cracked and slippery concrete sidewalks
Without cares but with many cares...

He listens to the world on an old AM transistor radio
She reads newspapers someone left behind—
and paints her nails and adjusts toe rings each morning …
He shaves a weathered face carefully, with a blade and mug of manly lather—
The modern age, the spiritus mundi, well that means nothing to this dyad. They have each other...

Sure, they live and love in a rented mobile
They love with the freshness of just-cut Timothy Hay, of Morning Glories, and the late April Rain…

There are no shadows dancing on the Sun…

But the sun shines anyway …

The Seacrest: sometimes love won't die...

Hi, folks. It's great to be here on the Goddess Fish blog today! Hope you all remembered to turn back your clocks!

For my twenty-first book, I've jumped from mystery into romantic suspense. It's been a blast! Thought I'd share a bit about it with you below.

What They're Saying:

“The abiding power of a first love resonates throughout this compelling story of loss and redemption.” Warren Adler, author of War of the Roses.

The Seacrest is a poignant love story that will have you reaching for the tissues. Every woman needs a Finn McGraw!” – Victoria Howard, bestselling romantic suspense author of RING OF LIES.

"At a time when many authors seem to crank out fiction by the numbers, Aaron Paul Lazar invests his whole heart in every book he writes. His stories shine with sensitivity, compassion, and the richness of deeply personal experience." – Michael Prescott, bestselling thriller author of GRAVE OF ANGELS

"Aaron Paul Lazar takes his reader on a ride that moves between wildly intense and slowly sensuous. It is a gripping love story that transports readers to a land of sea and lovers and life." -Maria B., reviewer

“…Beautifully drawn, The Seacrest explores twin mysteries of past and present tragedies that combine into a fascinating tale in which a young couple overcomes life’s misunderstandings, while reaching for the truth.”  - Sheila Deeth, author of Divide by Zero

“This book is about love – first love, young love, unrequited love, lost love, and rediscovered love. Simply put, it’s a good old-fashioned love story with an ending that will make your heart swell with joy.”  - Cindy Guest Taylor, acclaimed book reviewer

“I just finished reading Seacrest by Aaron Lazar. Let me tell you, ladies... you will LOVE this book! A love story of all love stories, and characters so easy to fall in love with! Aaron has a way of painting a world so descriptive you feel like you're really there. If I had a five star rating system to use, I would give him six!” Heather McLaren, author.

Synopsis:

They say it’s better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.

Finn McGraw disagrees.

He was just seventeen when he had a torrid summer affair with the girl who stole his heart—and then inexplicably turned on him, just before being sent to boarding school. Finn may have moved on with his life, but he’s never forgotten her.

Now, ten years later, he’s got more than his lost love to worry about. A horrific accident turns his life upside down, resurrecting the ghosts of his long-dead family at the same time it takes the lives of the few people he has left.

Finn always believed his estranged brother was responsible for the fire that killed their family—but an unexpected inheritance with a mystery attached throws everything he knows into doubt.

And on top of that, the beguiling daughter of his wealthy employer has secrets of her own. But the closer he gets, the harder she pushes him away.

The Seacrest is a story of intrigue and betrayal, of secrets and second chances—and above all, of a love that never dies.

PART I
Love and Loss

Chapter 1

July 2, 2013

Life can change in the blink of an eye. This blink came when a cop car cruised up The Seacrest’s white shell driveway on a hot Saturday in July.

I’ll never forget the moment. You know how folks remember where they were when John Lennon died? Or when President Kennedy was assassinated? It was like that, every detail stamped into my brain, forever.

A fresh breeze laden with the scent of the sea rustled blue flowers in a nearby hydrangea hedge. Hot and sweaty, I stood in the blazing sun feeling like a fool. I’d just finished weed wacking around the paddock fence posts. Unfortunately, said weed wacker had spooked Libby Vanderhorn’s favorite mare, Serendipity, who I secretly called Dippy, because she was such a loose cannon. She’d bucked and twisted like a bronco in a Wild West show, knocking down several fence boards and unseating Libby, the boss’s daughter.

Libby ran The Seacrest’s dressage school and was an experienced rider, but this time she’d been caught by surprise and landed in a sprawling heap on the soft dirt, swearing at me.
At thirty-two years old, she stood tall and willowy, and quite lovely if you didn’t count the personality. When she came at me, she didn’t mince words. We were about the same age, but I worked for her family, and she never let me forget it. The sting of her accusations still sounded in my head. How stupid can you be, Finn? What’s wrong with you?

Libby’s father held great power on Cape Cod. Rudolph Vanderhorn sat on so many boards, I’d lost count. His father’s fish canning company made a fortune back in the eighties, and he and his daughter had enjoyed the spoils ever since.

I stooped to pick up a hammer from my toolbox, planning to reattach the fence boards before any of the horses got hurt on the protruding nails. Curious now, I watched the Brewster Police car circle the long drive, heading toward the mansion. The local authorities stopped by every few days to discuss town matters with my boss. But today the blue light was flashing, which didn’t look like a casual visit.

A shudder went through me, and I turned cold. Something bad had happened. I sensed it.

The front door opened, and Rudy watched them approach, one hand shading the sun from his eyes. Like a majestic lion, he stood broad-shouldered and strong, his longish white hair lifting in the sea breeze.

Libby stopped hosing down her big white mare, who thankfully hadn’t hurt herself in the fit she’d thrown earlier. The horse snorted and rubbed her big head against her owner’s arm as if to scratch an itch. Long, dark hair blew around Libby’s face, and she stared with open curiosity at the cruiser, rhythmically combing her fingers through the mare’s curly mane.

Time froze.

I stood still, gripping the hammer, studying the patrol car as it drove past the front porch with its impressive columns and portico. It didn’t stop for Rudy, but passed the six-car garage, followed the driveway to the barn, and rolled to a stop ten feet from me, lights still flashing.

Police Chief Kramer and Deputy Lowell stepped out and ambled toward me, their eyes somber.

I dropped the hammer; it thudded to the grass near my feet.

“Finn?” Kramer said, approaching slowly. “I’m afraid we have bad news.”

There is nothing worse than hearing that bad news is about to be delivered. My brain went wild, imagining the worst scenarios. But somehow I didn’t quite picture what he was about to tell me.

“There’s been an accident,” Kramer said.

Lowell, a high school football star in his day, kicked the dirt at the edge of the path. “Car went over the cliffs,” he said, avoiding my eyes.

“For God’s sake, guys.” I looked from Kramer to Lowell. “Who was in the car?”

Kramer pulled out a piece of paper. “I regret to inform you that your wife, Cora Mae McGraw, and your brother, Jaxson Robert McGraw, have been killed in a vehicular accident.”

Deputy Lowell touched my sleeve, then awkwardly stepped back. “We’re real sorry, Finn.”

“Car went into the ocean,” Kramer said. “We believe they were dead on impact.”

I stared at them, numbness creeping up my spine. “What the hell?”

“Er, look, if there’s anything we can do...” Lowell seemed remorseful, and he offered a hand when I lost my balance and grabbed for the fence.

Libby and her father appeared at my side in seconds, but in the dreamlike state of denial and shock, I caught only brief snatches of their words, as if the wind had grabbed them, teasing me with the bits and pieces.

“What happened?”

“Bad accident.”

“She died?”

Who was with her?”

And so on.

Libby guided me across the lawn and around back to the mansion’s cavernous kitchen. I leaned woodenly against the refrigerator while the family’s beloved cook, Fritzi, bustled her big, ample self about the kitchen making coffee and pushing fresh corn muffins at the officers.

Someone helped me into a chair. I sat, dazed and unmoving. The voices warbled around me and now my brain began to pick through the new knowledge, still not comprehending.

Cora’s dead?

It wasn’t real. Couldn’t be real.

Jax is dead?

I hadn’t seen my brother in ten years.

Ten years since I’d even talked to him. I sometimes almost drove past the blueberry farm, thinking of my old life. But I never actually stopped there.

Ten years since my parents died in that fire. Since I lost my little sister, Eva. Ten years since my family burned because of that cigarette smoldering in the couch.

Ten freaking years.

I didn’t even know what Jax looked like anymore. Had he lost hair? Gained weight? Turned prematurely gray like our father did in his thirties?

Ten years.

A shudder passed through me. A great gulping sound sputtered from my throat. I think I started to hyperventilate.

I locked eyes with Libby, whose mouth was moving. I couldn’t hear her.

Cora is dead.

Jax is dead.

Laying my head on my arms, I silently convulsed.

One thought wandered around the edges of my brain, refusing to go away, in spite of the enormity of what had happened.

What the hell was Jax doing with Cora?

King of Bad by Kai Strand, Excerpt and Giveaway

Hi! I'm Kai (pronounced like the letter.) My first young adult novel, King of Bad, is the first book in the Super Villain Academy series. It has been a top 5 bestseller for the publisher since it’s release. My Goddess Fish review tour starts on the 22nd with the standard virtual book tour starting on December 2nd. Be sure to follow both tours. I’m offering separate giveaways for each one.

About the book:

Jeff Mean would rather set fires than follow rules or observe curfew. He wears his bad boy image like a favorite old hoodie; that is until he learns he has superpowers and is recruited by Super Villain Academy – where you learn to be good at being bad. In a school where one kid can evaporate all the water from your body and the girl you hang around with can perform psychic sex in your head, bad takes on a whole new meaning. Jeff wonders if he’s bad enough for SVA.

He may never find out. Classmates vilify him when he develops good manners. Then he’s kidnapped by those closest to him and left to wonder who is good and who is bad. His rescue is the climactic episode that balances good and evil in the super world. The catalyst – the girl he’s crushing on. A girlfriend and balancing the Supers is good, right? Or is it…bad?

Excerpt:

Jeff admired the growth of the flames as they devoured wads of paper and fast food wrappers in the wire mesh trashcan. He slipped the book of matches into his pocket and sat back on his heels to admire his work. One side of the can merely smoldered so he blew gently to fan the guttering flame. It reminded him of how blowing on Jasmine’s neck the night before had resulted in a lovely arch of her back. He growled a throaty sigh, remembering Jasmine’s blissful distraction as he’d nibbled her earlobe.

“ Hey!”

Jeff glanced over his shoulder. A man, who looked like he belonged behind a desk in a downtown high rise, jogged toward him.

“ Ah, the sweet sounds of discipline.” Jeff stood, stuffed his fists in the front pockets of his jeans and shook the long bangs out of his eyes. He half expected the guy’s slick-soled business shoes to slip as he jogged across visitor parking. This was Jeff’s favorite part. Almost getting caught. When the guy was a baseball’s toss away, Jeff turned. He walked a couple steps then skipped up into a jog.

“ Kid, stop!”

Jeff chuckled to himself and said, “Yeah, sure,” and loped across the soccer field.

“ Wait a minute.”

Jeff stole a look over his shoulder. The guy was close even though he didn’t seem to be running very fast. Jeff grinned at him and increased his pace. A seven-foot tall chain link fence ringed in the far side of the field to prevent stray soccer balls from breaking the windows of passing cars on the street below. Jeff leaped onto the fence without slowing down and in two cat-like movements, launched himself over the top. He dropped to the ground, landing on a hill pocked with gopher holes, as easily as if he were jumping around in a bounce house. He smoothly transitioned back into a sprint and dashed across the street, startling a lady driving an SUV.

“ Kid, hold up.”

Jeff almost tripped; the guy was half way across the street already. He smirked, finally a decent chase, but not for long. With little effort, Jeff stepped up to a blurring speed. He dashed up a peaceful street that ran perpendicular to the school, where kids rode bikes and ran through sprinklers. Jeff recognized one of the “good” kids from school, washing a ’57 step-side Chevy.

“ Sweet ride,” Jeff called out. The kid looked up at him, but then snapped his head to the left. That guy cannot be that close! Jeff looked over his shoulder to find the guy was only a house length behind him. Holy crap, Batman. No one ever keeps up with me!

For the first time in a long time, Jeff worried. But only a little. With a deep, fortifying breath he pumped his thigh muscles harder. He whizzed past houses so fast he doubted anyone would be able to describe him if they were asked to later. Tears streamed sideways from the force of the wind his speed created. He’d only started to breathe a bit more heavily than normal. Jeff was built to run.

“ Kid, hold on just a second.”

Jeff stumbled, but regained his footing again before becoming road rash. The guy sounded as if he was only a bus length away. How can that be? No one runs as fast as I do. Jeff’s lungs constricted. An alien emotion, panic, budded in his chest. Stay focused. Controlled, deep breaths allowed calming oxygen into his lungs and up to his brain and Jeff’s airways opened fully again.

Real speed required concentration. Jeff concentrated on his thigh muscles. Usually he only bothered to think about the front muscles in order to ignite his unusual speed, but this time he thought about the sinewy, sleek muscles that wrapped gracefully around the larger front muscles. He envisioned how the smaller muscles provided strength and support to the larger working muscle. He pictured that strength extending into his gluteus maximus to sustain a strong stride. The resulting speed was completely inhuman.

The world became a blur of color. Luckily he’d run this route so many times that he knew it by rote. He turned up a street and ran a block before darting onto a trail that paralleled an irrigation canal. He hurdled the canal and then dashed off the trail, stirring up the scent of sage as he ran through the underbrush. In one fluid movement, Jeff vaulted over a cedar fence into a cul de sac. A block up was an old barn, incongruous in the modern suburban neighborhood, left by the original owners of the land after they’d sold the surrounding farmland.

Jeff dashed into the cool shadows of the dilapidated barn. Immediately he ran to the front corner of the building and pressed his eye to a knothole. Jeff sucked in his breath in surprise when he saw the guy jogging up the street toward the barn. The guy’s head cocked slightly as though he’d heard Jeff’s intake of air. Jeff slowly pulled enough air to fill his lungs and then held his breath.

The guy slowed to a walk. A vacant expression made Jeff think the guy concentrated more with his ears than his eyes. The guy came to a stop in the middle of an intersection. A maze of streets stretched out in all directions, some ending in cul de sacs that led back to the walking trail. Jeff smirked at the frustration on the guy’s face as he realized Jeff could have run in any direction.

Just then, the guy zeroed in on the barn. Jeff’s heart raced from the extra effort he’d put into the run and the adrenaline rush of hiding. He thought his chest might burst so he let his breath seep from his lungs. Slowly and quietly, he sipped in more and then held still. The guy must know this is the only place to hide. He’s gonna search the barn. Jeff didn’t much care if he got caught. No, that wasn’t right because he was never “caught” in the act; he was usually only observed. Then it became a matter of finding him later and providing witnesses. What would happen if this guy found him? Would he go straight to jail? The guy still gazed intently at the barn. Jeff wondered why he stood there instead of walking over to search it.

Something entered the barn then. The dog that lived at the house padded over to Jeff, wagging his tail. Jeff automatically rubbed the top of the dog’s head and scratched the side of its face, but never took his eye off the guy.

The guy watched and waited. Thirty seconds later, he furrowed his brow, pursed his lips and cursed. He turned and jogged back to the fence. With barely a squat, he leapt straight over, his feet just touching down on the top as he cleared the six-foot height with room to spare. Then he dropped out of sight on the other side.

Jeff’s jaw dropped and the breath he’d been holding whooshed out. If he hadn’t seen it, even he wouldn’t have believed it. Jeff had to vault over, yet that guy cleared it in one jump like he was a white tail deer. Who was that guy? What was that guy?

Jeff looked down at the smiling shepherd. “Hey thanks for hiding me again, buddy.”
