Love Your Car

After writing such a dark and intense novel as Glorious, I was in the mood to write something light hearted and fun.  I wasn’t sure exactly what it was I wanted to write about but I knew it’d be something quirky in an Alfred Hitchcock kind of way.

The solution came to me one afternoon at a friend’s house.  We had all gotten together for a barbeque. The four of us were sitting in the kitchen talking and drinking wine while the guys were outside grilling.  Shortly after our second bottle was passed around, another friend of ours arrived driving a 1964 Mustang. Red, of course.  The car was in cherry condition, absolutely beautiful, and as we stood at the window watching our guys admiring probably the greatest muscle car ever built, one friend (I can’t remember which) said, “they’d screw that car if they could.”

And hence, Marilyn was born.

The theme of a haunted car isn’t new. Stephen King did a brilliant job with Christine.  The Twilight Zone once aired an episode of a haunted Model T that forced its owner to tell the truth.  I even vaguely recall a pathetic television series that aired back in the 1960’s called My Mother the Car.  I, however, didn’t want to write about a car that mangled people, or mothers who had been reincarnated as vehicles. I wanted to write about a car that could screw the daylights out of its owner.  And I did, snickering in adolescent glee all the way.

Marilyn (named after the legendary movie star) is a 1958 Edsel Citation uniquely haunted by two amorous ghosts. Vinnie, the owner, local thug and hot rod king, and Chloe, the beautiful Marilyn Monroe lookalike died while performing a sex act during a high rate of speed.  Their spirits attached to the car, as well as their sexual energy, thus making Marilyn every teenage boy’s fantasy car.  Of course, Marilyn isn’t all fun and games. She does have a dangerous streak, as witnessed in the rest stop scene, and when Carol Ann is carjacked.  But over all, Marilyn is quite affectionate. So affectionate, that Bobby ends up chaffed!

I really had a great time writing this book and I hope that fun shines through to every constant reader who downloads it.  In the meantime, have a little taste of what Marilyn offers:

EXCERPT:
“Just how jealous of us are you?” she asked Marilyn. “Are you going to turn yourself on and pin me to the wall? Are you going to run over me?” She smiled down at the car. “If you do that, then Bobby will really hate you. He’ll send you to the crusher in revenge.”
Marilyn, of course, said nothing.
“You’re not going to do anything,” Carol Ann said, her confidence returning. “You’re just an old piece of junk with a dead bimbo painted on your ass. Just like your namesake, there’s nothing real about you, is there?”
Carol Ann got into the car, slamming the door soundly. As soon as she sat down she felt a strange tingling sensation move up her spine, as if someone with a long fingernail was tracing her backbone from the back of her neck all the way down to her tailbone, then lingered there.
Carol shifted in the seat, clearing away the odd but vaguely pleasant sensation. She sat, puzzled as she felt something, a hand maybe? Slide between her legs. Carol Ann relaxed into the seat and spread her legs. The rubbing increased. Carol Ann didn’t know whether to scream or moan with pleasure. Instead, she sat there, gritting her teeth, feeling a strange mixture of excitement, revulsion and confusion. The unseen hands went up her shirt, caressing her small flat belly, running up along her flanks, up to her breasts. The radio switched on, Floyd Cramer’s Last Date poured from the speakers under the dash.
“Cut that out,” Carol Ann shouted.
The otherworldly sensation ceased instantly. Reality slammed down hard,
Carol Ann stared at the green dashboard. “Oh God, you really are having an affair with Bobby,” she whispered. “You bitch.”
Furious, Carol Ann started the car. She sat for a minute, her head tilted; her brow furrowed, trying to figure out the tele-touch transmission.
I hope I don’t accidentally shove the thing through the garage wall trying to figure the damned thing out, she thought as she pushed a button on the steering hub. Obediently, Marilyn backed out onto the street.
The pre-dawn air was cool and moist as she drove Marilyn down the block. Carol Ann’s hair was damp from the heat and clung to the back of her neck as she drove along darkened streets with the window rolled down. I won’t go too far, she reasoned. Just far enough, but not to the campus, because he’d get suspicious. No I’ll drop her off at the Kroger’s and leave it in the parking lot with the keys in the ignition. That’d do it. She smiled in grim satisfaction. Yes, that’s perfect. It’ll be close enough to walk back without him being any the wiser.
I went for my morning jog baby, I’ll tell him, Carol Ann conspired. And when I got home the car was missing. Someone must have taken it out of the garage while I was gone. They must have found the keys in the kitchen and just drove off with her. Sorry, lover. I must have forgotten to lock up when I left. My bad.
Marilyn’s radio came on without warning. I Like it Like That by Chris Kenner blasted through the speakers. Carol Ann jerked in surprise. She turned it off, but it came back on at once. Carol Ann slammed her hand against the console.
“You’re just full of it this morning, ain’tcha?” she asked Marilyn as she pulled into the Kroger’s parking lot. She parked the car underneath a dull orange street lamp.
She killed the ignition and sat for a moment. I’m doing a bad thing, she thought. Despite how she felt, Bobby loved Marilyn, and when she got rid of her, and he found out, he’d never forgive her no matter how many muscle cars she gave him.
She frowned. Is our relationship worth the price of a car? She wondered. Why can’t I relent and let him have the damned thing?
“Because you’re fucking my boyfriend, that’s why,” she said aloud. “I don’t know how, but that’s what’s going on and I won’t have it.”
An intense sensation ran up her leg, caressing her crotch. Marilyn became stifling hot; the aroma of Chanel and smoke from old fashioned cigarettes was stifling. A feminine giggle came from nowhere. Something ran up her right breast, probing her shirt, trying to find a way in.
Within seconds she was covered with rough obviously sexual caresses, tiny bites and heavy perfume. She lingered in the sensation, alternately frightened and excited at the same time.
After a few seconds of stunned excitement she bolted from the car, leaving the keys in the ignition and the door wide open as she ran as quickly as she could back toward their house.
“I did it, I did it I did it,” she heaved as she ran, hot and sweaty, back home. She leaned against the garage door, panting. “I got rid of it; I got rid of that hideous thing.”
She stepped into the garage and uttered a short shriek.
Marilyn was there, parked in her usual spot, the driver’s side door open. Carol Ann looked inside the car. The keys were in the ignition.
“How did you? How could you? How is it possible?”
Marilyn seemed to sneer around her horse collar grill.

CONTEST!
I am giving away a .Pdf copy of Marilyn today.  All you have to do is comment below and answer this one silly question.  If you could haunt a car, what car would it be?

BLACK DRAGON - a romantic novella of the Borealis Space Station Universe - by Vijaya Schartz

BLACK DRAGON
A Borealis Novella
Romantic Science Fiction
by Vijaya Schartz
Desert Breeze Publishing
October 1, 2011
A gambler is cheating in a den of the Borealis space station, and Lieutenant Zara  Frankel intends to catch him in the act. She always gets her man, but this one could prove more than she can handle.

Captain Czerno Drake, code name Black Dragon, has come under cover to break his innocent uncle from the most secure penitentiary in the galaxy, on the Borealis space station. He will stop at nothing to succeed, even enrolling the help of the lovely straight arrow TPP enforcer. When Zara realizes that she's been used by a shrewd but seductive rebel, her reaction surprises everyone, most of all herself.

EXCERPT:

When she breezed through the doors of the crowded and noisy casino, Zara glided straight to the private area behind the row of tall greenery and searched the high stakes tables for her suspected cheater. The owner said he wore a tan and yellow outfit and flaunted a white fluffy Terran cat. An ostentatious luxury.
She easily spotted the caramel overcoat and the sleeping white fluff on the pink gambling table. From the back, as she walked toward the table, she studied the square shoulders stretching the expensive velvet, strong shoulders for a pleasure-seeking dandy. The gleaming dark hair tied at the nape with a yellow silk scarf denoted a rare degree of refinement for a human male, and as she neared him, the musky scent of his cologne made her best perfume seem cheap in comparison.
Just before she reached him, he turned around, rose from his chair, and smiled down at her. He stood taller than she expected, muscular, with strong thighs bulging under the caramel velvet pants tucked into soft brown boots.
"Captain Czerno Drake, of the Providence. Lucky Drake to the ladies." The deep baritone voice rumbled low, like a sexy promise. The regular planes of his face, the square jaw, high forehead, dark brow, and the sparkle in his deep topaz eyes under thick eyelashes screamed of perfect genes and high-born society.
When he took her hand and kissed her fingers lightly, a frisson crossed her spine and her legs melted like chocolate in a solar flare. Despite the extraordinary refinement of his garb and manners, this man was alpha-male through and through, and as wild as they came. Eye candy in caramel velvet and yellow silk wrapping. All she could think about was unwrapping him, like a present at yuletide.

Welcome to October & My Paranormal World

Hi, I'm Stephanie Burkhart. I write paranormal, steampunk, fantasy, and contemporary romance as well as children's stories. I love coffee, chocolate, and lilacs. I'm very excited to be here on the blog today. ☺After all, it's October and October is full of paranormal stories with vampires, werewolves, witches, & other goulie things so I thought I'd share a little a little about me and some of my paranormal tales.

I grew up in Manchester, New Hampshire, and got my start writing comic books as a 6 year old. When I turned 18, I joined the U.S. Army wanting a great adventure. I became an MP (Military Police) and went off to Germany. I spent 7 years in Europe between 1986-1997. I've visited Berlin (before and after the fall of the wall), The Netherlands, Belgium, Paris, Venice, Salzburg, Poland, and Hungary. Two counties I wish I could have visited and hope to get there soon: Great Britain and Canada.

Did I mention I was married in Denmark? 20 years on 14 November!

When I got out of the Army, I settled in Castaic, CA which is north of Los Angeles. I became a 911 Dispatcher for LAPD in 2000. My sons are 9 and 5. Finding balance between working, writing, and being a mommy can be a challenge, but it's a rewarding one. When I go to sleep, I sleep pretty heavy, so most of my story ideas don't come from dreams, but from germs of ideas.

I love writing paranormal, steampunk, fantasy and contemporary romance. I also "kind of fell" into children's writing as well. As a reader, I love historicals of all kinds and settings, including Diana Crosby's Scottish historicals and Tami Dee's Vikings. I'm picky about reading paranormals, however. I like the focus to be on the man and how his humanity is challenged by the paranormal creature he is. Barbara Edward's "Ancient Blood" was a very enjoyable story for me because it was written in this vein. Cole is a werewolf who must learn to balance his life as he falls in love with Lily.

I enjoy Karen Michelle Nutt's steampunk stories as well as the "Steampunk'd" Anthlogy. For fantasy, I'm really into George R.R. Martin's "Game of Thrones." For contemporary stories, I liked Mona Risk's international novels, "To Love a Hero," and "French Peril," as well as romantic suspense by Maggie Toussaint and Melanie Atkins.

The bulk of my work is available as ebooks. My titles include:
The Hungarian, paranormal
The Count's Lair, paranormal
The Wolf's Torment, paranormal
Victorian Scoundrel, steampunk
Destination: Berlin, sweet contemporary (pen name: SG Cardin)
Anthologies:
Be Mused, story: Matchmaking Amusement, (fantasty/paranormal)
Borealis II, story: Shadows and Light (sci-fi)
Victory Tales Press, Stimulating Anthology, story: Christmas in Bayeux
Victory Tales Press, Spring/Easter Anthology, story: A Polish Heart

I'd love to hear from you. Do you have an ebook reader? How much are you willing to pay for an ebook?

Into The Fire

Into the Fire by Cherie Marks
Food is important in any culture.

For almost a year, I didn't have a kitchen table, which is practically unheard of in our culture.  Even if people only use it as a flat-surface storage, most households have a table in their kitchen or dining room.

We sold ours in a yard sale because it had grown too small for our family of five, but we decided not to replace it right away.  We ate in the living room instead, using the large ottoman as a table.

I missed my table.  Who knew how much having a table to sit around and enjoy a meal with my family would mean to me?  I missed my table so much my mother finally bought us a particular one I'd wanted for a long time.  It went on sale, and she couldn't resist.  Who was I to say no?

Statistically speaking, children who eat with their families around the dinner table at least three times a week are less likely to get involved with drugs, alcohol, and other risk-taking behaviors.  This has been promoted for a while now, and I believe it.  Quality time is invaluable.

And some of my best family memories growing up were around a table covered in all the foods I loved to eat and even some I didn't.  Sundays and holidays were always special, and the food was often the highlight of the day.

Maybe that's why I was drawn to the aspect of a televised cooking competition in which two chefs with a romantic past go head-to-head against each other, all the while trying to resist the combustible attraction between them.  As a result, I wrote a short story titled, Into the Fire.

Blurb
Months after he stole her affections—then her executive chef position—Shyann and Luke meet again under sizzling circumstances, competing head-to-head on a televised cooking show called Kitchen Twist. Each arrives with a motive: Luke intends to win back Shyann’s heart, even as she wants closure on the not-so-tasty heartbreak he once served up.

Luke knows culinary masterpieces require a delicate touch, but that knowledge is tossed out with the leftovers as he works to show Shyann he’s not such a bad guy. Now he pushes his skills to the limit to win the competition and satisfy a bet.

Can two top chefs resist each other as they move out of the pan and into the fire?

Excerpt
Silence reigned for half a minute before he
reached out a hand and touched hers like a breezy
whisper. Her head went a little fuzzy at the warm
contact. He shouldn’t still be able to affect her so
strongly.

“I regret it went down the way it did, but why
did you show me the exit before giving me a chance
to explain, not to mention—dress? Enlighten me,
sugar cheeks?”

With a jerk, she pulled her hand free. He was
really asking for it. Sugar cheeks? Seriously? Now
she knew he was only messing with her. She could
give as well as she got.

“Tell you what. You win tonight, and I’ll give
you your chance. You lose, we go our separate ways,
and you walk out all by yourself, big boy.”
A crooked grin formed on his face as he reached
a hand toward her hair. He fingered an escaping curl
before she pulled away, leaving his hand hanging in
midair.

“You can call me big boy all you want, but I’ll do
you one better. How about if I win, I take you to
dinner, and you let me explain the whole situation?”
She felt her eyebrow rise and knew he’d read it
as interest, but she didn’t care at the moment. “I
honestly don’t want to hear any explanation from
you now or ever, but if I win? Which I will, of
course.”

“Then I’ll leave it up to you. If you want me to
walk away, I will.” He took a step closer, placed his
hand on her shoulder, and leaned down, his mouth
right next to her ear. “But if you want me to call you
darling, sweetheart, and sugar cheeks all night long,
I’ll do that too.”

Almost Halloween!

Man, I love October.

There's so many great things going on this month. Yesterday marked the opening of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Feel yourselves up, ladies and gents. Today is Name Your Car Day.

Yes, that's right. Go name your cars. I'll wait. ... Ready for mine? The Mustang is Stella and the truck is Fred. October 5th is National Storytelling Day. *evil laugh* Everybody is going to hate me on Wednesday. And let's not forget No Beard Day on the 18th, followed immediately by Evaluate Your Life Day.

Perhaps the greatest holiday in October is Halloween. Pumpkins and ghosts and zombies and skeletons. Who can ask for more? When else is it acceptable to dress yourself in the most imaginative thing you can dream up, and walk around your neighborhood or office in said costume?

But what if your life was in danger? That's where I put the main character in my Halloween release. Her name is Billie, and when her nightmares become reality she has nowhere to hide. Here's a little more about Siege of Shadows, coming October 29th from Silver Publishing:

A neighbor, arrested, covered in his wife’s blood. A wolf stalking her. To top it all off, the new neighbor is trying to kill her—in her nightmares.

Billie is having one hell of a time with the new guy on the block. She can’t decide if she hates him or wants to take him to bed, for starters. And every time she dreams about him, she wakes up with dried blood on her body.

There’s only one explanation, but even Billie thinks she’s crazy for believing it. No way her neighbor is trying to kill her.

Right?

If you'd like to learn more about Billie, or read an excerpt, check back later today and I'll have one posted for you. Or you can more info on my website and at my blog. I can also be found on Facebook, Twitter, Goodreads, and by email! Thanks for dropping by!
